Fundraising Ideas for Schools

Mountain Brook Schools opened the empty seats at its teacher-conference keynote to the community at $25 a ticket, sold out in under 24 hours, and raised more than $8,000 on an event that never used to make a dollar. Kari Austin breaks down how a two-person team ran it and what she would change next time.

Show Notes

Kari Austin is the chief school finance officer at Mountain Brook Schools in Alabama, and this year her district tried something it had never done. Its two-day teacher conference always closes with a keynote, and this year's speaker was author Allen Levi, whose novel Theo of Golden had spread through the community by word of mouth. Instead of leaving the extra auditorium seats empty, the district opened them to the public at $25 a ticket. It sold out in under 24 hours and raised more than $8,000, on an event that had never made a dollar.

Kari walks through how a two-person team ran it with almost no extra work, why the seats moved so fast (book clubs bought eight at a time), and exactly what she'd change next time: release all your seats at once, state your refund policy up front, and keep a paper list at the door. A clear-eyed, low-risk playbook any school or district can copy.
