Our guest, Billy Rettenmeyer, shares his weight loss journey using the principles of the Keto diet. What he learned were some of the pros and cons of the diet and why he is considering changing after a year of seeing some good results.

Billy is a Finish Carpenter with a fantastic skillset a physically demanding job.  He struggled with his weight for most of his life, today he discusses with us the success he found on the Keto diet and the decision-making process he went through to see if this was the right plan for him.

Billy has an amazing transformation story. It starts like many people's stories. He had tried other diets, eliminating sugars, but never stuck to it long enough for them to really work. But what he liked about Keto was the efficiency and how it allowed him to hack his body to see the changes he was looking for.

Pros of the Keto diet
  • Took away Billy's cravings
  • It utilizes a mechanism that our bodies have always had called ketosis that tells the body to use fat as a fuel source instead of carbohydrates
    • It's helpful to know what you can eat instead of all the things you can't

We talk about how long it takes to get into ketosis and why that's important to losing weight. It took Billy two months and he had withdrawals and a rough time getting into that state. Billy didn't see the mood stabilization that many people say they experience. 

Billy shares what Keto snacks he found that he enjoyed.

How do you know if you are in ketosis or have left ketosis? There are finger pricking tests that allow you to know. They are affordable and available on Amazon.

Billy was able to get off of two medications within six months. Including lowering his cholesterol which is further proof that we have fallen victim to the marketing that high-fat foods lead to high cholesterol. 

We talk candidly about the sustainability of the Keto diet. Billy is considering moving away from it because his goals have changed from losing weight to get out of the category of morbidly obese to now he is going to the gym to add muscle. Billy lost 70 pounds over the year on keto.
