Welcome to episode #9! In this week's podcast, Braden and Matt interview FamilyLife Canada staff, Val and Al. They share about how porn almost ended their marriage - and how they chose to fight and save their relationship!

Here is a brief summary of the episode.

Denial and hiddenness create secrecy and mistrust
Al and Val share how a veneer of secrets may keep the outside appearances looking okay, but a big secret like a porn addiction leaves a feeling of insecurity that can't be glossed over. It is better to tell the truth and build trust instead of trying to hide a secret that will lead to feelings of betrayal when exposed.

Truthful conversations - while uncomfortable and at times painful -  are necessary!
A truthful conversation may seem like something we'd rather avoid because potential conflict is never an easy option, however it is always the better option long-term. If we avoid necessary conversations like disclosing a porn addiction, the avoidance will almost always lead to much greater conflict and potential for marital breakdown. But with God's help, we can have difficult conversations that can be an opportunity for a deepening of trust and reconciliation.

We need to lean on God in dealing with our pain and helping us to forgive
Following Jesus prompts us to choose to love one another and forgive as we have been forgiven. This process isn't easy - especially when pain and hurt exist in our marriage. Forgiveness is a choice that will lead to healing for both spouses. It is so powerful to forgive even when we don't feel like it and before we're fully healed from the negative effects of porn. Leaning into God will help us forgive and will help deal with our pain and trauma.

Freedom is amazing!
God wants us all to have purpose and vision in marriage. Porn hi-jacks your intimacy and takes your eyes off of your purpose. When porn is out of your marriage, you'll have deeper intimacy and you'll see God at work in your marriage and in the lives of those you're impacting as well.
