Breaking out of the downward spiral of more and more work that leads to burnout, and transforming our approach to focus on a better process and better approach to work and life, is key to success and happiness. For those of us who have experienced burnout, we understand how difficult it can be. And the need to constantly be evolving and improving the way we approach work and life.
Much of what we learn when we’re young and in school, such as putting our heads down and studying more to do better on the next test, is the wrong lesson for our careers. It’s no longer about getting to the next level and next level. We need to shift our focus to a more “infinite” game.
We don’t have to wait for something massive to happen to us, but can use life’s little signals to understand when we need to change. Often that means getting an outside perspective, like a coach, to help accelerate your career.
Coaching can be a confusing term though. Anyone can claim to be a coach, so how can you determine what you need and who will help you transform your career? We discuss key things to look for and the benefits you can get beyond just resume and interview prep. And how to get the most out of coaching.
When we think about sports, it is almost absurd to think of athletes without an array of coaches. That’s what makes them professionals. But we as professionals have very little coaching in our careers. And it’s a shame, because we need it as much as any athlete. Our managers aren’t always qualified to be coaches either.
