In this powerful homily, Fr. Chris Alar, MIC reflects on Jesus’ warning about the trap of riches and the difficulty they can create on the road to salvation. Wealth itself is not a sin, but attachment to money, possessions, comfort, and self-sufficiency can slowly replace our dependence on God. The Gospel challenges us to examine where we place our security: in what we possess, or in Jesus Christ?
The central lesson can be expressed simply: Have things, but possess nothing in your heart except God. We can receive material blessings with gratitude without allowing them to replace the Lord. And if God calls us to surrender something—money, possessions, comfort, status, or another attachment—we should be willing to give it up.
Wealth can make salvation more difficult when it creates pride, selfishness, attachment, or the illusion that we do not need God. But wealth can also become an instrument of love when it is placed at God's service. The question is not simply, “How much do I have?” but rather, “What possesses my heart?”
