अहो गतिः कष्टदेयम् !

कश्चन कथाकारवृत्तिं कुर्वाणः पिता यदा दिवं गतः तदा तस्य अल्पविद्याः चत्वारः पुत्राः अनाश्रयाः जाताः । कदाचित् राज्ञा तेषां कथाश्रावणाय व्यवस्था कल्पिता । जनानां, राज्ञः, राज्ञ्याः च दर्शनात् तेषां चतुर्णां धैर्यं च्युतं जातम् । एकैकेन एकैकं वाक्यम् एव उक्तम् । वस्तुस्थितिं ज्ञातवती बुद्धिमती राज्ञी तेषां वाक्यानां विवरणं कृत्वा भ्रातॄन् रक्षति । कार्यसमाप्तेः अनन्तरं राज्ञी तान् अहूय वदति – ‘स्वशक्त्यनुगुणं किमपि कृत्वा जीवन्तु भवन्तः' इति । चत्वारः अपि लज्जया शिरः‌ अवनमय्य ग्रामं प्रति गतवन्तः ।

A storyteller father passed away, leaving his four uneducated sons. The king arranged for them to narrate a story, but upon seeing the royal court, the brothers lost their courage and spoke only one sentence each. The wise queen defended them by explaining their words. Afterward, she advised them, ‘Live according to your abilities". Embarrassed, the brothers returned to their village.
