00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:44.140 And as we look at Judges 13 in the life of Samson, as we talk about the birth of Samson 00:07:44.140 --> 00:07:49.280 today, it's going to give us some foreshadowing into the Christmas season, some foreshadowing 00:07:49.280 --> 00:07:55.360 into the birth and the life of Christ, and what God's trying to stir our hearts for as we 00:07:55.360 --> 00:08:00.760 look for this Savior, Redeemer, that's come to set us free from the sins of the world. 00:08:01.520 --> 00:08:07.800 And so I hope for you, where you find yourselves this morning, whether you've started decorating 00:08:07.800 --> 00:08:17.200 your house or not, I hope what you find yourselves is getting into being reminded of this season 00:08:17.200 --> 00:08:23.200 that we will celebrate, but it won't be a season that is marked by dragging decorations out of 00:08:23.200 --> 00:08:28.980 the attic and then one day putting them back up, but it's a season that resides in our heart. 00:08:30.620 --> 00:08:33.980 And it's who we are, and it's what we're about. 00:08:35.980 --> 00:08:40.200 So in Judges 13 verse 1, it says, 00:08:41.380 --> 00:08:58.380 We find ourselves back at where we were before in almost every message as we've gone through. 00:08:58.380 --> 00:08:59.420 This is week 8. 00:09:00.260 --> 00:09:04.220 We begin and we find ourselves in the same pattern again. 00:09:04.660 --> 00:09:10.160 Israel finds herself where she has been so many times before, stuck in a pattern of sin. 00:09:12.660 --> 00:09:19.580 So many times in Judges, what we see is this pattern, and it's not, it's noted by the pattern 00:09:19.580 --> 00:09:20.440 of the pattern of again. 00:09:20.440 --> 00:09:23.860 Again, again, Israel does what's evil. 00:09:24.100 --> 00:09:26.920 Again, Israel does what's evil. 00:09:27.280 --> 00:09:31.500 And so what I want us to kind of look at as we, as we go through this, as we look back on what 00:09:31.500 --> 00:09:36.680 we've talked about and looking forward to what we will see, we hope that we find ourselves 00:09:36.680 --> 00:09:39.400 right where Israel finds herself. 00:09:39.960 --> 00:09:43.660 Are you and I again stuck in the spite of all 00:09:57.320 --> 00:10:04.900 that they claim true, yet again, we find ourselves doing evil in the sight of the Lord. 00:10:05.900 --> 00:10:12.060 And I know that for me, as I navigate through this, it's so easy for me to pick up the stone 00:10:12.060 --> 00:10:14.400 of judgment and cast it at Israel. 00:10:14.580 --> 00:10:18.040 But I find that so many times, this is where I find myself as well. 00:10:18.140 --> 00:10:22.780 If I'm being honest and open and transparent, in spite of what I know, in spite of what I've 00:10:22.780 --> 00:10:28.500 experienced, in spite of what I've done, again, again, again. 00:10:29.820 --> 00:10:31.800 And so here God does. 00:10:32.400 --> 00:10:33.940 He turns them over. 00:10:34.520 --> 00:10:39.980 He turns them over in the --> 00:11:20.780 being used by some to explain the feelings in which they feel when they say things like, 00:11:21.560 --> 00:11:25.020 we need Jesus like never before. 00:11:25.020 --> 00:11:33.400 I want to talk about that phrase because that phrase could be put on Israel. 00:11:35.020 --> 00:11:39.900 In chapter 13, again, they need the Lord like never before. 00:11:39.940 --> 00:11:44.960 I think when that phrase is used, the intent is okay. 00:11:46.040 --> 00:11:51.040 I think the heart of the heart of the individual of what they're trying to proclaim is the reminder 00:11:51.040 --> 00:11:52.460 that we need Jesus. 00:11:53.360 --> 00:11:55.720 But the theology of it is incorrect. 00:11:57.100 --> 00:12:01.600 Because the truth of the statement is not, we need Jesus like never before. 00:12:02.300 --> 00:12:05.560 The truth of the statement is, we need Jesus. 00:12:06.940 --> 00:12:17.200 That's where it's 20-20, 18-20, 17-20, no matter what point in time in which we find so again, Israel does what's evil in the eyes of the Lord. 00:12:49.360 --> 00:12:52.660 Again, they live in their bondage of sin. 00:12:53.560 --> 00:12:59.580 And again, they need the Lord where we find ourselves. 00:13:00.440 --> 00:13:05.900 And so the theme of Judges of what we've seen in the past, what we will see in Samson and 00:13:05.900 --> 00:13:12.040 continue to see as we close out this book over the next several weeks is God in the impossible. 00:13:12.660 --> 00:13:16.800 Now, I want to say this so that I'm equally correct theologically. 00:13:17.400 --> 00:13:22.420 God works in both the impossible and in the possible, all right? 00:13:22.780 --> 00:13:24.100 God works in both. 00:13:24.600 --> 00:13:29.840 God doesn't just step in and say, oh, you can't do anything now, so watch what I can do, right? 00:13:29.940 --> 00:13:33.380 God works in the possible when we think that we're the ones achieving it. 00:13:33.380 --> 00:13:37.380 And God works in the impossible when we've given up and realized that it's got to come from Him. 00:13:37.660 --> 00:13:39.860 God is equally at work. 00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:41.840 God is equally moving. 00:13:42.140 --> 00:13:47.900 God is equally working us in the path of His plan to redeem for Himself a people. 00:13:48.440 --> 00:13:55.120 But oftentimes, what God graciously does is when we see these experiences of God working in the impossible, 00:13:55.500 --> 00:13:59.980 is it opens our eyes to acknowledge that it came from Him and Him alone. 00:14:00.540 --> 00:14:04.200 Two times in Scripture, Jesus is confronted with a problem. 00:14:04.700 --> 00:14:14.100 And the problem that He's confronted with is that there are large thousands of people who have been listening to Him speak, watching Him heal. 00:14:14.260 --> 00:14:16.820 And in that moment, they are hungry. 00:14:17.840 --> 00:14:18.540 A problem. 00:14:19.680 --> 00:14:21.880 A problem that can be fixed in the possible. 00:14:22.880 --> 00:14:31.440 God could have rallied His disciples and sent them into the market to explain what was going on and to get enough food to come back and take care of the needs, but He doesn't. 00:14:32.720 --> 00:14:41.500 Instead, He's able to get His hands on an insufficient amount of food and then multiply the food to feed the masses. 00:14:42.220 --> 00:14:46.600 God could have worked through the possible of what made sense, but He chose not to. 00:14:46.600 --> 00:14:56.660 He worked through the impossible, and in doing so, eyes are open to understand who He is as He explains and as He displays His divinity. 00:14:57.720 --> 00:14:58.940 God working in the impossible. 00:14:59.820 --> 00:15:03.100 And so it's what we've been seeing in Judges time and time again. 00:15:03.100 --> 00:15:08.820 The impossible situation in which Israel finds itself and God says, 00:15:09.480 --> 00:15:15.700 Watch what I'm going to do because I'm a God who works in the possible, but I'm also the God that works in the impossible. 00:15:16.600 --> 00:15:19.900 As your eyes are aware, as your eyes are opened. 00:15:20.620 --> 00:15:27.100 Well, the story of the impossible is going to be so filled into Samson's life. 00:15:27.780 --> 00:15:29.020 Let's keep reading verse 2. 00:15:29.940 --> 00:15:30.120 It says, 00:15:30.120 --> 00:15:40.060 There was a certain man of Zorah of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah, and his wife was barren and had no children. 00:15:40.860 --> 00:15:44.900 And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, 00:15:45.460 --> 00:15:51.960 Behold, you are barren and have not born children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. 00:15:52.540 --> 00:15:58.980 Therefore, be careful and drink no wine or strong drink and eat nothing unclean. 00:15:59.600 --> 00:16:02.180 For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. 00:16:02.940 --> 00:16:09.240 No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb. 00:16:09.880 --> 00:16:11.720 And he shall begin. 00:16:11.860 --> 00:16:12.820 I want you to focus that. 00:16:12.880 --> 00:16:17.280 If you're like me and you underline things in your Bible, underline he shall begin. 00:16:18.040 --> 00:16:23.040 To save Israel from the hand of the Philistines. 00:16:23.840 --> 00:16:30.880 What we're going to see in this passage of Scripture are the similarities that we're going to find in the gospel narrative 00:16:30.880 --> 00:16:34.160 between the birth of Jesus and the birth of Samson. 00:16:34.160 --> 00:16:47.880 But the writer of the text gives us these three words, he shall begin, as a reminder so that we don't get confused that Samson and Jesus aren't on the same playing field. 00:16:47.880 --> 00:17:01.120 So that we understand what we are seeing is a foreshadowing of what took place, but that Samson in and of himself is an insufficient redeemer to do what needs to be done. 00:17:01.220 --> 00:17:06.400 Because in these three words, he shall begin, but he will not be able to complete. 00:17:07.660 --> 00:17:15.080 You see, found within the limitations of Samson, in all of these, it is a work that God is going to put in place. 00:17:15.520 --> 00:17:18.800 But it is not a work that is going to be done eternally. 00:17:19.760 --> 00:17:21.440 And so we begin to see and understand. 00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:23.760 So let's look at the comparisons. 00:17:24.160 --> 00:17:36.720 Here we see an angel of God appears to a woman who was without child and should not be able to have children based off of the condition in which the angel comes to her. 00:17:37.600 --> 00:17:38.920 We see that with Samson, right? 00:17:39.540 --> 00:17:42.220 For Samson's mom, she's barren. 00:17:42.300 --> 00:17:43.700 She's not able to have kids. 00:17:44.040 --> 00:17:49.340 She's tried for years to come to her elderly moment and says, this is what's going to happen. 00:17:49.640 --> 00:17:51.540 This is what's going to take place in your life. 00:17:52.080 --> 00:17:53.800 In the story of Jesus, right? 00:17:54.140 --> 00:17:59.460 Appears to Mary at a different age, but finds that she's a virgin. 00:18:00.860 --> 00:18:06.460 Unable to have children based off of the conditions they find themselves in. 00:18:06.740 --> 00:18:10.720 But the angel of the Lord comes and says, God has a different plan for you. 00:18:11.260 --> 00:18:23.040 With here, we see that from the very beginning, before life even exists in flesh, God has a plan for the deliverance of his people. 00:18:23.400 --> 00:18:27.460 Every other judge that we look at, they're established. 00:18:28.160 --> 00:18:29.400 They have character. 00:18:29.820 --> 00:18:31.100 They have history. 00:18:31.440 --> 00:18:32.600 They have a past. 00:18:32.960 --> 00:18:34.220 People know who they are. 00:18:34.220 --> 00:18:43.700 But here in the life of Samson, it is declared before he is even conceived that he will deliver. 00:18:44.680 --> 00:18:46.460 And the exact same thing. 00:18:46.900 --> 00:18:50.340 That God sends his son. 00:18:51.340 --> 00:18:57.840 The life of the two, even though they are different from each other, they will be different from the norm of what's there. 00:18:58.560 --> 00:19:09.560 The life of Jesus will be a life marked by a sinless nature and action of who he is, unlike anyone who has ever lived and anyone who will ever live. 00:19:10.100 --> 00:19:19.340 But for Samson, while he doesn't have the sinless nature, he takes the Nazarite vow that he cannot drink from the vine, that even his mother cannot. 00:19:19.340 --> 00:19:32.780 That he cannot cut his hair, that he cannot become spiritually unclean, so that both of them, that when you see them, you'll be reminded of the fact that they were chosen for a purpose and for a reason. 00:19:33.100 --> 00:19:34.900 Now, Samson, we're going to see next week. 00:19:35.020 --> 00:19:35.720 He's got his struggles. 00:19:35.820 --> 00:19:36.700 He's going to have his issues. 00:19:36.920 --> 00:19:38.180 He's going to have his failures. 00:19:39.560 --> 00:19:51.360 Unlike Jesus, who's sinless and perfect, but both marked from the beginning, we see in their similarity the fact that they were set apart. 00:19:52.500 --> 00:19:57.060 Samson set apart from the womb, but Jesus set apart from the beginning. 00:19:58.160 --> 00:20:06.640 Jesus set apart not in the moment where the angel declared it to Mary, but Jesus set apart before time began. 00:20:06.640 --> 00:20:16.440 So that in Genesis 3, when sin enters into the world, that God speaks and declares the deliverer who will set him free. 00:20:17.440 --> 00:20:24.800 We begin to see the similarities that begin to link through in the birth of Samson, in the life of Samson, 00:20:24.960 --> 00:20:30.580 and it foreshadows to the future of what we can see in the person and the life of Jesus. 00:20:30.760 --> 00:20:32.760 But there is a difference. 00:20:32.760 such things as these. 00:25:27.340 --> 00:25:29.180 So Manoah here in this moment, right? 00:25:30.100 --> 00:25:35.260 He understands what we see happen so many times in the Old Testament.
