what I want us to do this morning as we get into this, I want us to take just a few 00:02:37.980 --> 00:02:46.740 moments this morning and begin by debunking the money and the wealth myth that oftentimes is held 00:02:46.740 --> 00:02:47.700 by believers. 00:02:48.600 --> 00:02:52.600 And it's going to give us some of the importance of what it means as we talk about this, of 00:02:52.600 --> 00:02:55.640 reading scripture in context, all right? 00:02:55.840 --> 00:03:01.900 The importance of reading the entirety of scripture, of working through and understanding what God's 00:03:01.900 --> 00:03:02.400 word says. 00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:08.640 Because if we read this on a surface level, we can walk away from here by saying, well, 00:03:08.680 --> 00:03:12.540 if I'm not wealthy, if I don't have a lot of money, then this isn't about me. 00:03:12.600 --> 00:03:16.600 Because this is about the wealthy, this is about money, and that's not me. 00:03:17.920 --> money is a root of all kinds of evils. 00:03:43.940 --> 00:03:49.380 It is through this craving that some have wandered away from faith and pierced themselves with 00:03:49.380 --> 00:03:49.820 many pains. 00:03:49.820 --> 00:03:54.620 So, so Paul writes to Timothy and he says, look, here's what you need to understand. 00:03:54.760 --> 00:04:02.320 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evils, plural. 00:04:03.540 --> 00:04:08.580 And that people have wandered away from the faith because of this. 00:04:09.420 --> 00:04:15.740 Jesus looks at his followers in Luke 16.13 and says, no servant can serve two masters. 00:04:16.420 --> 00:04:23.900 For either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise 00:04:23.900 --> 00:04:24.540 the other. 00:04:24.540 --> 00:04:28.680 You cannot serve God and money. 00:04:29.300 --> 00:04:34.320 So is money a cautious thing for us as believers? 00:04:34.740 --> 00:04:35.120 Yes. 00:04:36.060 --> past that's a little bit sketchy 00:07:19.260 --> 00:07:21.500 to get you where you are today, right? 00:07:21.500 --> 00:07:26.200 That's what we begin to feel and think oftentimes, but it's not the 00:07:47.420 --> 00:07:52.900 You see, Joseph of Arimathea in Matthew 27, a very wealthy man. 00:07:54.040 --> 00:07:59.700 And after the crucifixion of Jesus, when everyone's running away and everyone's hiding and everyone's 00:07:59.700 --> 00:08:02.260 afraid, they don't want to be arrested, what does he do? 00:08:02.260 --> 00:08:12.480 He goes to Pilate, asks for the body of Jesus, prepares the body for burial, and placed Jesus 00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:15.240 into his family's tomb. 00:08:16.400 --> 00:08:22.320 A man of wealth, a man of power, but a man who loved Christ, right? 00:08:22.660 --> 00:08:29.980 We see Lydia in Acts chapter 16, a wealthy business one from Thyatira who was saved under 00:08:29.980 --> 00:08:32.340 the teaching of Paul in Philippi. 00:08:32.660 --> 00:08:39.620 And a lot of early church historians suggest that she and her funds were a lot of what could 00:08:39.620 --> 00:08:44.840 take place to help spread the gospel and to fund missionaries during the days of the early 00:08:44.840 --> 00:08:45.260 church. 00:08:46.500 --> 00:08:47.540 And this is what we see. 00:08:48.900 --> 00:08:49.960 We see in King David. 00:08:50.500 --> 00:08:57.340 We see in King Solomon over and over and over again, we see people of wealth, people with 00:08:57.340 --> 00:09:01.080 money, but who were using it for the means who glorify God. 00:09:01.140 --> 00:09:02.240 So where do we get this from? 00:09:03.100 --> 00:09:09.380 Where do we begin to get these things, these notions in our head that money is evil and that 00:09:09.380 --> 00:09:11.620 if you have a lot of it, then you must be evil too? 00:09:11.880 --> 00:09:16.140 Well, oftentimes we as believers get this because we take scripture out of context. 00:09:16.800 --> 00:09:19.100 We don't understand what is happening. 00:09:19.220 --> 00:09:23.840 So if you've got your Bibles open, hold where you're at in James 5, but jump over to Matthew 00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:24.440 19. 00:09:27.180 --> 00:09:29.600 It's an interaction that Jesus is going to have. 00:09:29.660 --> 00:09:32.140 We're going to look at his interaction with his disciples first. 00:09:32.520 --> 00:09:37.200 And then we're going to jump back a few moments before that happened and look at his interaction 00:09:37.200 --> 00:09:39.720 with someone else. 00:09:40.760 --> 00:09:42.400 So Matthew 19, verse 23. 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:52.400 And Jesus said to his disciples, truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich 00:09:52.400 --> 00:09:54.640 person enter the kingdom of heaven. 00:09:54.900 --> 00:09:55.560 And we're like, well, pause. 00:09:55.620 --> 00:09:56.660 That's all we need right there, right? 00:09:57.480 --> 00:09:57.980 Verse 24. 00:09:58.100 --> 00:10:03.660 Again, I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for 00:10:03.660 --> 00:10:05.640 a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. 00:10:05.640 --> 00:10:12.720 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, who then can be saved? 00:10:13.720 --> 00:10:20.260 But Jesus looked at them and said, with man, this is impossible, but with God, all things 00:10:20.260 --> 00:10:21.400 are possible. 00:10:22.100 --> 00:10:28.700 What Jesus is doing in Matthew 19, 23 through 26, is he's explaining to the disciples what 00:10:28.700 --> 00:10:29.520 just happened. 00:10:30.180 --> 00:10:35.380 He's explaining to them what just took place, what they observed as they would have been 00:10:35.380 --> 00:10:41.880 shocked to watch Jesus' conversation with a man that most of us know as the rich young 00:10:41.880 --> 00:10:43.620 ruler or the rich young man. 00:10:44.780 --> 00:10:50.440 There's this individual a few verses earlier, and he comes to Jesus, and he asks Jesus a question. 00:10:50.740 --> 00:10:58.440 And his question is, what good deed must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:10:59.380 --> 00:11:05.240 And Jesus, in this dialogue with him, asked him about the word good. 00:11:05.240 --> 00:11:08.200 And he says, well, what is good? 00:11:08.740 --> 00:11:12.160 What good deed must I do, the rich young man says. 00:11:12.220 --> 00:11:17.160 And Jesus says to him, well, there is only one who is good. 00:11:18.440 --> 00:11:23.060 And then Jesus used the words, keep the commandments. 00:11:23.260 --> 00:11:24.700 Now, here's what this means. 00:11:25.480 --> 00:11:35.080 If you've ever broken one, if you are breaking one, or if you ever will break one, then you're 00:11:35.080 --> 00:11:40.740 not keeping, you haven't kept, and you will not keep the commandments. 00:11:40.980 --> 00:11:49.800 And so Jesus lays out before him a list, not of all of them, but of some. 00:11:51.420 --> 00:11:56.940 And you and I know, yeah, violated that, violated that, violated that, violated that. 00:11:57.080 --> 00:12:00.720 But the rich young man looks at him and says, but I've done all. 00:12:01.900 --> 00:12:02.700 All of us. 00:12:03.820 --> 00:12:10.040 Looks at him, I'm a walking picture of religious perfection is what he claims before Christ. 00:12:11.160 --> 00:12:13.620 And then Jesus looks at him and says, right? 00:12:14.340 --> 00:12:18.480 He says, if I've done all this, what do I still lack? 00:12:19.280 --> 00:12:27.120 And Jesus said to him, if you would be perfect, go and sell what you possess and give to the 00:12:27.120 --> 00:12:32.680 poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come follow me. 00:12:33.680 --> 00:12:41.820 And when the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. 00:12:42.820 --> 00:12:53.600 So Jesus, as he looks at his disciples, is explaining to them what just happened before. 00:12:55.180 --> 00:13:06.460 And he says, that idol that you have that's in your heart, go and get rid of it, and then 00:13:06.460 --> 00:13:07.340 come and follow me. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:13.960 You see, Jesus' disciples would have been blown away that this conversation is even happening 00:13:13.960 --> 00:13:14.820 to begin with. 00:13:15.440 --> 00:13:21.740 Because in most of the culture of that time, if you were Jewish and you had a lot of money, 00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:28.640 which this guy was Jewish, this guy did have a lot of money, then everyone around you believed 00:13:28.640 --> 00:13:30.020 that you were going to heaven. 00:13:30.180 --> 00:13:36.100 Not because you could buy your way in, but because it was obvious by your amount of wealth 00:13:36.100 --> 00:13:38.500 that you've been blessed by God. 00:13:38.820 --> 00:13:43.780 And what Jesus does here, he says, no, no, no, no, no, no, it's about the heart. 00:13:44.840 --> 00:13:46.100 It's about the heart. 00:13:47.360 --> 00:13:53.680 How you define yourself, where you see, are you pursuing this, or are you pursuing the Lord? 00:13:54.700 --> 00:13:57.200 And so Jesus steps right in and cuts to the heart of it. 00:13:57.280 --> 00:14:03.900 So while it may appear here that James is going after the wealthy, James is more so attacking 00:14:03.900 --> 00:14:07.100 00:14:49.520 James begins with a warning here. 00:14:51.320 --> 00:15:01.860 If money is at your heart, whether you've got a lot of it or none of it, if money is at the pursuit 00:15:01.860 --> 00:15:15.640 --> 00:15:17.740 James says, this is who you are. 00:15:17.740 --> 00:15:24.280 It's not a brokenness that needs to happen when it takes place, but in every fiber of your being --> 00:15:38.040 the behavior of hoarding is what we see. 00:15:39.260 --> 00:15:46.260 The sin of selfishness that looks at the possessions of what they've accumulated over time and says 00:15:46.260 --> 00:15:49.600 this, what is mine is mine. 00:15:51.040 --> 00:15:51.600 Ooh. 00:15:53.060 --> 00:15:54.220 Is that our mindset? 00:15:55.840 --> 00:15:58.480 What is mine is mine. 00:15:59.320 --> 00:16:00.340 That's logical. 00:16:02.980 --> 00:16:05.460 That's culturally applicable. 00:16:07.220 --> 00:16:08.540 But it's just not biblical. 00:16:09.900 --> 00:16:10.960 And that's the problem. Lord in our life in a calling of being generous? 00:17:04.900 --> 00:17:10.460 You know, you have those moments where if you're writing a book, you're going to list these stories that have happened in your life. 00:17:10.480 --> 00:17:11.900 At least that's how my mind thinks. 00:17:11.900 --> 00:17:20.180 And one of those is a conversation that I had very early on in ministry at the first church that I was serving at with a man by the name of Melvin Lord. 00:17:20.300 --> 00:17:23.860 Now, Melvin's gone on to be with the Lord at a young age. 00:17:24.060 --> 00:17:27.440 Went in for a simple outpatient surgery, right? 00:17:27.680 --> 00:17:30.500 And in that time, the Lord called him home. 00:17:30.980 --> 00:17:38.680 But if you were to ask me, like some of the most godly men that God's ever given me the privilege to be around, Melvin and Lord. 00:17:38.880 --> 00:17:40.480 Melvin Lord is one of those. 00:17:40.740 --> 00:17:47.320 Just what all that God taught me through his kindness and his grace and his generosity just was mind-blowing. 00:17:47.320 --> 00:17:54.780 But early on in our ministry at the church there, Melvin said, hey, I want to come by the office because I've got something for you. 00:17:55.400 --> 00:17:56.660 I'm like, okay, great, great, great. 00:17:56.720 --> 00:17:59.640 So he came by that day and he gave me a gift. 00:18:01.080 --> 00:18:01.820 He gave me a gift. 00:18:03.380 --> 00:18:06.880 Now, what a gift is, it's not important, but Melvin gave me a gift. 00:18:08.260 --> 00:18:13.100 And so I'm sitting there, I'm early on in ministry, not even married yet. 00:18:13.100 --> 00:18:15.400 Just getting ready to get married in a couple of weeks. 00:18:16.260 --> 00:18:24.420 And I'm trying to parse through in my brain, how do I humbly interact in this moment? 00:18:25.060 --> 00:18:26.180 Very generous gift. 00:18:27.380 --> 00:18:33.800 And I said to Melvin in that moment, I said, man, thank you so much for this, but I just don't
