About the Book:
On the island paradise of Crete, two families are separated by tragedy. They are brought back together during the Nazi occupation following a massacre of men and boys in one of the villages. The family survive the occupation, the horrors of war, the blight of leprosy, and the changes the disruption of their world brings to each of them. Their lives become entwined together as they collide with the Germans, the Italians, and the resistance. An English archeologist who becomes a British operative on the island becomes more deeply involved with the family than he intended, causing long lasting consequences that will echo through the years.
Three of the women form a friendship that will ensure their survival through the occupation, civil war, military dictatorship, heartbreak, loss and the political turmoil of Greece in the twentieth century. They are guided by the elder females of the family Eleftheria and Elpida as their fortunes and those of their children change from poverty to successful business men and women in a new era of tourism. The hands of history and fate in an ancient land forge great loss and great loves. Heartbreak and grief strike their lives but their love and friendship are constant.
