This podcast provides practical training for convenience store assistant managers. Each episode focuses on the real challenges of running a shift, supporting store managers, handling employees, and keeping operations on track in a fast-paced environment.
Assistant managers are often expected to lead without formal training. Survive helps bridge that gap by breaking down shift management, team accountability, inventory control, and problem-solving in a way that can be applied immediately on the job.
If you are stepping into leadership or currently managing shifts, this podcast will help you build confidence, make better decisions, and handle the daily pressure of store operations.
S EPISODE 74: THE GLASS CAGE (CRISIS MANAGEMENT)
It’s 3:14 AM. Your phone rings. You know that ring. It’s the store. Your stomach drops because nothing good happens at 3:14 AM. You answer. It’s your night clerk. They are crying. 'They took it. They had a gun.' In that second, you aren't an Assistant Manager. You are the First Responder. The robbery is over, but the crisis has just begun. How you handle the next 60 minutes determines if your team quits tomorrow or if they feel safe enough to come back.
Welcome back to C-Store Legends. I’m Mike Hernandez. Today we are talking about The Glass Cage—but from your side of the counter. In Dive, we told the clerks how to prevent a robbery. In Survive, we talk about what happens when prevention fails. When a robbery happens, everyone looks at the camera footage. But the police look at the Cash Drawer Report. If that bad guy got away with $200, that isn't just a crime. That is a policy failure. And as the Assistant Manager, that failure is on you. Your job is to enforce the Safe Drop. I know, the clerks complain. 'It takes too long to drop $20.' You look them in the eye and say: 'I am not making you drop cash to save the company money. I am making you drop cash to save your life.' If the bad guy knows we only have $30, he goes to the store down the street. You are the shield. Enforce the drop.
And when the call comes in? You have a protocol.
1. Lock the Door. Stop business immediately.
2. Call 911. (If they haven't already).
3. Preserve the Scene. Tell your clerk: 'Do not clean up. Do not sweep. Do not touch the counter.' The adrenaline makes them want to clean. Stop them. And then, you get to the store. Not to yell about the money. But to check on the human being who just had a gun in their face.
"I know how heavy this feels. Leading a team through a crisis can make you feel like you aren't qualified for this. Like you're stuck in the middle. I want you to know something about my path. It wasn't a straight line. I first attended college in the Spring of 1987. I didn't finish. Work and life got in the way. For years, I felt behind. But in 2009, while I was working for Flying J, I went back. I finished my degree in 2012. It took me 25 years. I call it the 'Lucas Plan'. I worked my way up to District Manager, and then I realized my real purpose was helping people like you grow. It doesn't matter how long it takes you. This position—Assistant Manager—is just a chapter. It’s not the whole book. If you want to know where this chapter leads, listen to Thrive. See how the Store Manager handles the investigation. Keep moving forward."
Alright, let’s secure the team. Your job is to be the calm in the chaos.
Here is your Solo Quest for this week. "The Safe Drop Audit." Randomly audit a drawer in the middle of a shift. If they have more than $50, don't write them up immediately. Coach them. "This $100 bill is a target on your back. Put it in the safe." Make them understand the Why.
I have a "Post-Incident Protocol"—a one-page sheet you can tape by the phone. It tells the clerk exactly what to do the second the robber leaves (Lock, Call, Preserve). Text the word CRISIS to 956-897-9 1 9 2. That’s CRISIS to 956-897-9 1 9 2. Get the protocol. Protect your people.
And if you want to know how the Store Manager handles the police investigation and the insurance claim, check out Episode 83 of Thrive. I’m Mike Hernandez. Stay safe. Stay calm. I’ll see you in the back office. C-Store Legends is a Sink or Swim Production.
