Work in Progress

Saying no sounds simple. So why is it so hard?

In this solo episode, Gayle Kalvert shares why she struggles to set boundaries, how overcommitting manifests in her life (hello, migraines), and why saying no still feels uncomfortable, even when she knows better.

Is it just Gayle, or do you feel it too?

What is Work in Progress?

No one has it all figured out. And anyone who says they do? Well, they’re lying.

This is for the women who are trying. Trying to juggle all the things. Trying to make sense of what they actually want. Trying to keep their heads above water without losing themselves in the process.

Career. Money. Relationships. The pressure to do it all. The pressure to want it all. And the moments you secretly wonder, is it just me?

Here we speak openly, laugh through chaos, and ask questions instead of pretending to have all the answers.
Because we’re all a work in progress.

Gayle Kalvert [00:00:00]:
Then there's all this stuff in the back of my head that I'm like, I should be doing this and I should be doing this and I should be doing that. And so I find myself never saying no because I really do want to help. But what happens then for me, I get migraines. I don't know what everybody else's thing is, but I'm pretty sure we've all got something that either physically right, you start to know like, I'm overextended.

Gayle Kalvert [00:00:23]:
This is Work in Progress. I'm your host, Gayle Kalvert, and yes, I'm a work in progress.

Gayle Kalvert [00:00:30]:
Hey there. Is it just me or any of you struggling with saying no?

Gayle Kalvert [00:00:35]:
I know I see it all over my social media feed. You have permission, you are encouraged to have boundaries and say, no, we're supposed to protect our overall health, we should be doing self-care. I totally get it, and I'm absolutely horrible at it. I grew up in an environment where nobody really sat down and you didn't relax until you'd earned it.

Gayle Kalvert [00:00:59]:
Wasn't what anybody said. That was just how we lived. And I once told a therapist actually true story, um, that I was working aggressively at not stressing. She was like, Gayle right there, there is a challenge. Okay. You can't even relax when you're thinking about trying to be more relaxed. so I'm working on it.

Gayle Kalvert [00:01:22]:
I am definitely a work in progress, but. I had a guest on recently, Leslie Bailey. I'm excited for you all to hear the show where she gives a really specific, even a script on how she says no and subtracts things from her life instead of adding, and I felt really inspired, but also like overwhelmed. I say yes in all compartments of my life.

Gayle Kalvert [00:01:44]:
So how do I start saying no, I have three kids who are teenagers who obviously I love and have the best time with. So I'm not saying no in that area at all. work. I love to work, I really do. And I'm working on saying no and really prioritizing, right? Like where it is I spend my time when I'm working.

Gayle Kalvert [00:02:07]:
But then there's all the other stuff, right? Family, friends, volunteer, and then there's all this stuff in the back of my head that I'm like, I should be doing this and I should be doing this and I should be doing that. And so I find myself never saying no because I really do want to help. But what happens then for me, I get migraines.

Gayle Kalvert [00:02:25]:
I don't know what everybody else's thing is, but I'm. Pretty sure we've all got something that either physically right, you start to know like, okay, I'm overextended, like WTF, we've got to do something about this. so I'm curious, is it just me or are you guys also struggling with saying no? And, and if you've found a way to combat that, please, please, please share it with me and the rest of us. Cause I know we can all learn together. Let me know, and I'm excited to continue this dialogue with all of you.

Gayle Kalvert [00:02:55]:
So is it just me or are any of you asking yourself the same question? DM me your "is it just me?" moments because let’s be real. None of us have it all figured out.
