Here's today's Medical Minute from the School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Laboratories around the world are flooded with COVID-19 test kits, rapidly producing positive and negative results for an anxious global population. But there are some common questions surrounding testing. One big question is whether you need to be tested. According to the Center for Disease Control, most people who catch the virus only develop a mild illness and can recover from home so testing is not necessary. Many patients ask if a swab of the throat is the best way to test. They ask because news reports show some people being tested by a swab in the nose. To clarify, tests can either be swabbed of the nose or of the throat so both ways are correct. Also you may not hear back about test results for seven to ten days. This means while you wait, you need to act as if you have COVID-19, meaning isolate yourself at home.
