Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter than You Started. It's Wednesday and by the middle of the week it can sometimes be a quiet temptation to check not your emails not your diary your progress your decisions your efforts the things you've been working towards. You find yourself asking is this actually working? You might ask it about your work, your relationships, a new habit you've been trying to build, a project that's taking longer than expected or maybe simply life in general. Am I getting anywhere?
Keith:Is any of this making a difference? Should I already be seeing results? Something very understandable about that.
Intro:When we invest our time and energy into something we naturally want reassurance.
Keith:We want signs that our effort is worthwhile. We want evidence that we're heading in the right direction. So we keep checking looking for progress looking for confirmation looking for proof. But sometimes constant checking makes growth harder to see. Think about planting seeds in a garden.
Intro:You wouldn't dig them up every morning to see if they'd started growing.
Keith:You trust that something is happening beneath the surface. Not because you can see it but because growth often begins long before it's visible. Life has a way of working like that too. Some conversations don't reveal their value until weeks later. Some acts of kindness quietly change someone's day without you ever knowing.
Keith:Some habits take months before they begin to feel natural. Some decisions only make sense when you look back. Yet when we're living through those moments it's easy to become impatient. To wonder whether any of it's making a difference. Wednesday often brings this feeling.
Keith:You've invested time. You've made the effort and now part of you wants reassurance that it was worth it. But perhaps not everything needs measuring in real time. Perhaps some things need trust more than in spectrum. Because every time we stop to ask is this working we momentarily step away from simply doing the work itself and often that's where the real progress happens quietly consistently, without applause, without dramatic breakthroughs, just one small action after another.
Keith:You don't need to keep checking whether it's working. You don't need constant reassurance that every effort is producing immediate results. You don't need visible proof before you're allowed to continue. Sometimes the most meaningful progress is happening while it still feels ordinary. While it still feels slow.
Keith:While it still feels unnoticed. So if today you catch yourself wondering whether your efforts are paying off whether you're making enough progress whether it's all worth continuing Perhaps gently remind yourself not everything that matters announces itself straight away. Something simply asks for your patience. Today's thought for you. You don't need to keep checking if it's working.
Keith:Thank you for sharing this moment with me and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side.
