Femina

In this episode, Nancy Wilson looks at several passages on the eyes of the Lord, showing how God’s constant sight is both a comfort and a warning: comfort for the righteous, whose cries He hears, and terror for evildoers, who cannot hide from Him. She reflects on God’s care for His people, His judgment of good and evil, and the assurance that when believers pray, His ears are open to them.

Welcome to the Feminate Podcast. This is Nancy Wilson. Thanks for joining me today. I'm going to look at a few verses in the Psalms and Proverbs today that mentioned the eyes of the Lord. And we're going to take just a brief look at a few of those references and consider how this should influence us in our understanding and our walk with God. The first aspect is that God has his eyes on his people all the time like good parents have their eyes on their children. Psalm 33 18, behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his mercy. And Psalm 34 15, the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are open to their cry. God loves those who fear him. He cares for those who are looking to him in hope of mercy. And his eyes miss nothing. His eyes are on those who fear him, the righteous, who are looking to him in faith. He loves his people. He will never leave them or forsake them. Do you need help? Hope in his mercy because his eye is on you. Are you included in the family of the righteous? Then his ears are wide open when you cry out to him in your need. If you are one of the many who are called his own special people, then he is watching over you and watching out for you. He's not capable of distraction or disinterest. He is a loyal father who is keeping his eye on his people. Now this can be disconcerting if you're being disobedient because you want to hide like Adam and Eve. Keep your sinful thoughts or behavior out of his sight. But you can't. He sees and he knows. He sees secret sins and he sees sins done in broad daylight. There's nothing he does not see. If you're behaving in a manner unworthy of your high calling in Christ, then go. Go to him now and confess your sin. His eye has already seen it. His ears have heard your cry for mercy. Grace and forgiveness. You cannot hide anything or any thought from the Lord. A good parent knows what his children are up to. Have you ever asked a direct question of a disobedient child and seeing the evasive response in the eyes and in the words? Even we can sometimes discern a guilty conscience and how much more can God? So of course our ears and our eyes should be on our own kids. Our calling is to imitate our good and holy Father in heaven who forgives and shows mercy. We should be good listeners when they are out playing in the backyard and have an ear open to what's going on. They are our responsibility. They are our children and no one else's. But I digress. Second, God's eyes are unsaved and center alike. All men are seen by God. Proverbs 521. For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord and he ponders all his paths. In Proverbs 153, the eyes of the Lord are in every place keeping watch on the evil and the good. As Matthew Henry puts it, the wicked shall not go unpunished nor the righteous unrewarded. For God has his eye upon both and knows their true character. This speaks as much comfort to saints as terror to sinners. He beholds the evil and the good is displeased with the evil and approves of the good and will judgment according to the sight of his eyes. In Proverbs 2212, the verse says, the eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the faithless. All these centuries, God has preserved knowledge. His eyes have kept and preserved his word, which is an amazing testimony to his power and authority. Otherwise, had God not preserved the Bible for us, we would be without hoping with that light. But his eyes preserve knowledge. This should be a matter of great gratitude every time we open our Bibles to read. God has preserved this word, his word for you and for me and for our children and grandchildren and great grandchildren to a thousand generations. He takes special care to preserve and protect his word. So we should not take that lightly. This is a tremendous gift. The Bible's the treasure for us to hold dear to be deprived of it would be an unspeakable loss. Meanwhile, the words of the faithless, all the gibberish and lies of the unbelievers are thrown down and defeated. All the empty words of the faithless are overturned blah, blah, blah. I guess that should be a word to us to make sure our words are faithful and not faithless. Ecclesiastes 5.3 and a fool's voice is known by his many words and Matthew 6.7 and when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as a heathen do? For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Finally, a third aspect of the eyes of the Lord. Verse 3.12, for the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayers. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil. This is another reminder that we enjoy a tremendous privilege as Christians. The eyes of the Lord are on us and his ears are open to our prayers. When you pray, you are heard. He is never too busy or distracted like we are. His ears are open, not closed. His eyes are open, not closed. But his face is against the evil doers. Hebrews 10.31 says it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Oh my, it is a fearful thing to even imagine. But his face is against those who do evil. What a commendation Asa received in 1 Kings 15 and Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord as David's father had done. To do right and to please the Lord is our highest good. So we should strive to be that kind of person who does what is right in God's eyes because he sees it all. And when the evil doers reproach us as they will and as they do, we can pray like Hezekiah did in Isaiah 37-17. Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear. Open your eyes, O Lord, and see, and hear all the words of Snackarib which he has sent to reproach the living God. When you have troubles, then you should ask God to hear and see, and you know He does, He is going to answer that prayer because He is already heard and seen. But point it out, O Lord, do you see what these people are saying about us? Do you hear these lies? When we have enemies and we do, we must ask the Lord to incline His ear to us just like Hezekiah did, and we know He will hear, always He will hear. So I hope this encourages you. Remember it's a disconcerting thing for the unrighteous to know that God sees and hears, but it's a great comfort for the believer to know He does, He hears and He sees.
