The State is a daily rundown of the headlines that matter to the East Lansing, MI community.
Hi, and welcome to the State Podcast. I'm your host, Rebecca McEvoy. Today's date is 10/10/2025. The forecast predicts that it will be a chilly day with a high being 65 and a low being 41. The state podcast is a daily podcast that brings you the stories that matter.
Speaker 1:Starting today off with on campus MSU news. Pro Palestinian students honor lives lost during two year anniversary of war in Gaza. Nearly 100 students gathered in front of the rock Tuesday evening in remembrance of the 680,000 Palestinian lives lost during the two year war that started on 10/07/2023. The event was organized by Students for Justice in Palestine and the Harya Coalition, a group of student organizations formed after 10/07/2023, calling for MSU to divest over 230,000 from the State of Israel. And for our second story of the day, Michigan lawmakers agree on state budget for fiscal year 2026.
Speaker 1:As the fiscal 2025 has come to a close, the Michigan government decided on a new budget for all departments. Some of these departments include the Department of Transportation, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The legislators typically work to pass the budget by July. However, it is more common that they don't come to a decision until the fall. The government approved the budget on the morning of October 3 after fears of a government shutdown.
Speaker 1:Now moving on to sports news. Kennedy Bell named to Herman Trophy watch list. The Herman Trophy annually honors the top male and female players in college soccer. Kennedy Bell is the daughter of former Michigan State and Pittsburgh Steelers player, Myron Bell. Kennedy has been on fire in green white since transferring from Maryland.
Speaker 1:Her goal scoring efforts have earned her honors such as top drawer soccer and Big 10 offensive player of the week. And, she has most recently been named in the inaugural Missouri Athletic Club Hartman Trophy mid season watch list. And, for our last story of the day, Spartan offensive line struggles as it has restricted MSU football from being its best. Michigan State football has been struggling this season and its offensive line has felt the heat. Against Nebraska this past Saturday, the unit failed to generate any push.
Speaker 1:The same was true against USC. With UCLA and other future opponents looming, improvements up front is a must. There are no holes to run through, no protection for the quarterback, and none of the dominance expected from a Big Ten offensive line. Instead, opposing defenses are overwhelmed with the Spartans at every turn. To improve, something must change.
