The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Reunited and it feels so good! Kat Bass returns for our Triggered Tuesday indie adventures with a lotta tunes and attendant good times in tow, but first we pay tribute to a Gwangju legend as Mike Schroeder passed away far too early last week.

Show Notes

As braodcast November 8, 2022 with plenty of fond goodbyes.  Tonight we open the show paying tribute to a good friend we lost last week Monday far too early.  Mike Schroeder was a tremendous presence here in Gwangju for years and years, a guy known for his love of music, smoked meats, baseball, and so much else.  A true renaissance man, to be sure.  Thus, Danno dedicated the opener for tonight's program to the memory of our dear friend, as selected by the woman he loved Maria, and we also tailored the first block of new tunes for this week to a man whose lack of presence surely diminishes our fair City of Light.  Full two hours tonight we (finally) have Kat Bass back in the studio and we have a lot to get through musically, with cutes from Kainalu, Una Rosa, Goth Babe and MorMore being highlights in a very strong pack of freshies.

Part 1
Bon Iver – Skinny Love
Habe – Nothing
Goth Babe – Holy Tonight
Una Rose – Resolutions
Kainalu – Ginseng Hourglass
Conflict at Serenity Pools – Don’t Feed Bear

Facts
Bon Iver – Skinny Love
- For anyone long-term here in Gwangju, we suffered a big time loss last week with the tragic and far too early passing of Mike Schroeder, whose funeral was over the weekend.
- It was properly Mike, with plenty of booze, good stories, and laughs so I’m sure he was smiling down. I reached out to his long-time partner Maria for that song, and what a great tune.
- Mike was kind of a renaissance man. Producer, restaurant owner, teacher. It took him a while to warm up to people and he was always a bit guarded and sly, but a brilliant guy to get to know.
- He & I connected over our love of techno & house music and our Midwest roots, and he was a great producer of beats as well. And the guy seriously knew his equipment. It seems he took the pandemic very seriously or word has it that was the case, so I hadn’t seen him in years prior to getting the news and I wish I had just one more sit down with him like we used to do regularly at First Alleyway pre-COVID.
- Rest in power, Mike Schroeder. Gwangju is very much diminished with your departure.
Habe – Nothing
- This is a new artist to me, and is the moniker of New York City based singer , songwriter, and producer Max Haberman.
- Haberman has been doing his thing under this moniker since 2017, releasing a debut EP in 2019 called What Did You Say? If you liked that and wanna hear more.
Goth Babe – Holy Tonight
- Now, we have a bit more coming up on Kat’s playlist with this artist, who’s normally semi-nomadic in California living out of their studio van.
- This is the 2nd tune from an interesting collab Goth Babe is doing in Iceland, so we’ll hear more about that later on tonight.
Una Rose – Resolutions
- This is an artist out of Montreal and is the solo project of Rosie Long Decter who’s also a member of shoegaze outfit Bodywash.
- The tune we just rocked is part of the artist’s solo debut EP called Myth Between if you wanna dig deeper, and is the opening tune on the record. We’ll hear a little more of that as well later on with Kat’s playlist.
Kainalu – Ginseng Hourglass
- Out of Madison, WI this is the solo project of Trent Prall.
- This is the title track to Kainalu’s debut album, which just dropped over the weekend. We’ve basically played every teaser single to this LP previously, and Kainalu it must be admitted is fast becoming a big-time favorite on the show.
Conflict at Serenity Pools – Don’t Feed Bear
- Cue our weekly game of which is the title and which is the act’s moniker with this one.
- Very good tune right here from this band out of California that I’m none too familiar with, and appears on the band’s debut album California Poppy which we kind of slept on since it dropped in full September 30.
- That being noted, a very solid debut with lots of analogue synth action and dreamy, easy-going vibes kissed with faded, washed out vox, which we’re obviously totally fan girling over, Kat.

Part 2

Miss Grit - Follow The Cyborg 4.46
- Within America, I have felt that the idea of Asian humanoids never seems to leave the cultural consciousness. The techno-asian trope have been a part of Western popular media for decades, with examples like Ex Machina or Ghost in the Shell, and today artists of Asian descent have begun invoking the concept themselves:
- Korean-American musician Margaret Sohn ,also know as Ms Grit, inhabits the role of a repressed machine on their upcoming debut album, Follow the Cyborg, using the archetype to explore the complexities of selfhood. The accompanied music video explains in depth visually, so go check it out

Bobae - The Law of Inertia 3.10
- Korean indie artists Bobae has debuted their first album, King of Comedy, also known as 희극지왕.
- Inspired from a classic Korean movie and Chinese characters 희극지왕, Bobae wanted to express her belief on how no matter where you go, if you can find something you like to do and continue to do so, that is what you can change into a valuable moment.

There's also a cute self made music video accomponied with, so go check it out!

- Montreal artist Una Rose has shared their long waited debut EP, Myth Between. The solo project of Una Rose Long Decter from shoegaze duo Bodywash, her debut Myth Between finds her trading walls of sound for delicate synths and crystalline vocals.
- Far from an exercise in apathy, the EP tests the way feelings circulate and stick, laughter builds and dies—seeking hope in passing impressions.
- 5th track, In the garden digging, is a tribute to her mother’s pandemic planting.

- Raquelle aka Quelle Rox is a Latinx singer, songwriter and producer based in Brooklyn. Drawing her sound from a dream pop rich cosmos, she began concocting her potion of purples and blues, flowers and stars, giving us the music she has offered, including today's beaut, BIRDY'S.
