AI-Generated Summary (AI can be inaccurate. Check important information):

This shiur explores how a person should properly relate to physical pleasures and worldly pursuits based on the conclusion of the first chapter of Mesillat Yesharim. Rather than indulging in instinctual desires, one must treat physical experiences—such as eating, speaking, and enjoying the world—strictly as functional tools to maintain the mental clarity and strength needed for divine service. The ultimate objective across all life endeavors must be kirvat Hashem (closeness to God), which breaks the magnetic pull of material impulses and redirects the mind toward holiness. Consequently, an individual must relentlessly chase, seize, and retain anything that could even possibly serve as an instrument to draw closer to the Creator, while actively removing any hindrance to that connection.

1. Purpose of physical pleasure — According to the Mesillat Yesharim, physical pleasure (hana'ot ha'olam) is only fitting when utilized as an aid and assistance (le'ezer velesi'ua bilvad) to advance in avodat Hashem.
2. Deliberate action and speech — Whether eating food to gain strength or engaging in conversation, a person must deliberately calculate if their action will be beneficial rather than acting on instinct, thereby achieving yishuv hada'at.
3. Active Torah thoughts — The Rambam in Hilchot Isurei Bi'ah teaches that an empty mind defaults to forbidden thoughts (arayot); therefore, one must actively engage the mind in Torah to prevent improper desires from surfacing.
4. Singular focus on closeness — In every life role—whether in business, parenting, or prayer—a person's underlying purpose must be kirvat Hashem, continually evaluating if their actions bring them closer to Hashem or cause distance.
5. Avoiding spiritual complacency — One must avoid remaining static or performing mitzvot and davening on autopilot year after year, but must constantly strive to deepen and advance their connection to Hashem.
6. Shifting magnetic forces — While worldly desires pull a person like a magnet (kevarzel achar even shoevet), consciously dedicating oneself to avodat Hashem creates a holy pull where mitzvah goreret mitzvah takes over.
7. Pursuing potential growth — The Mesillat Yesharim indicates that even on a double safek, anything a person thinks might possibly serve as a means (emtza'i) to draw close to Hashem must be zealously pursued.
8. Holding onto mitzvot — When an opportunity for divine service arises, one must chase after it (yirdof acharav), firmly seize it (veyochaz bo), and never let go (velo yarpehu) so that spiritual accomplishments do not slip away.

בעזרת השם,

today we'll finish the first chapter.

Very exciting.

We should make a סיום on every פרק,

where it's it's a big Yes,

yes,

yes.

But no,

but then you read the first word,

and it speaks about not getting pleasure from the world,

and it's hard.

It's hard.

That's it,

that's the סיום.

We're making a סיום.

הנאות העולם,

getting pleasure,

physical pleasure from this world,

אין ראוי,

it's not fitting.

Should we just stop there?

There are sometimes you could just put a period in the middle of a

ספר,

and it it's out of context,

but it has a message in and of itself.

Getting pleasures in this world,

אין ראוי שיהיו לו אלא לעזר ולסיוע בלבד.

You are supposed to get pleasure from this world,

but you're supposed to be checking in constantly:

is this pleasure that I'm getting actually helping me?

Is it advancing me in my עבודת השם?

And on a physical level,

let's just talk about it on a physical level for a minute.

You're eating food.

We're not talking anything רוחני here.

You're eating food.

The goal of eating is to give you strength.

Some people will say,

no,

the goal of eating is to give me pleasure.

From a not a spiritual perspective,

but just from a moral perspective,

the goal of eating is to give me strength.

That's why it's designed.

If I and it's innate.

If I eat too little,

I won't have strength.

If I eat too much,

I also won't have strength,

I'll feel heavy.

There's a right amount of eating,

which the body innately will tell me that that's the right amount to eat.

So the goal of eating,

on a physical level,

is to be עזר and סיוע בלבד.

That's the goal.

Now on a spiritual level,

if I eat too little,

I won't be able to fulfill my spiritual obligations,

because I'll be weak.

If I eat too much,

I certainly won't be able to fulfill my spiritual obligations,

because I'll feel inclined towards physicality,

I'll be drawn after it.

If I eat the right amount of food,

not only on a physical level will I be stronger,

but on a spiritual level I'll be stronger.

Many people who eat don't have that in mind.

They eat like an animal.

Actually,

they're worse than an animal.

An animal does eat the right amount.

When an animal senses that it's eaten enough,

it stops.

It doesn't just eat and eat and eat and eat and eat because it

looks delicious.

In a way,

humans are worse than animals.

They'll know that they shouldn't be eating it,

they'll know that they're satiated,

but they'll continue eating just because they have a desire.

Our goal is to be getting pleasure from the world,

but always with the mindset of:

is this pleasure advancing me?

Is this pleasure helping me physically and spiritually?

Is it enabling me to be a better person?

On both levels,

this physical and the spiritual level.

And that has to be our starting mindset:

everything I'm doing in this world,

including getting pleasure,

I'm always checking in with myself,

is it advancing me?

Let me say something else different,

just it's an important point to note.

When you speak to someone else,

let's say you're a parent speaking to your child,

or a child let's talk about a child speaking to their parent.

Let's go both ways,

right?

So you're talking to one of your parents.

Now,

the goal of the speaking is to be beneficial.

So if,

let's say,

you want to have a discussion with your parents about your plans,

and yet and you know that you have slightly different agenda to what your

parents have,

let's say,

but you want to have a discussion.

So the goal is to be productive.

So if you don't think it through beforehand,

you don't think what you want to say,

you don't think what they're probably going to say,

you just say like,

"This is what I want,

I'm going to tell them," and you just like jump into the conversation,

almost guaranteed to be a failure.

They're going to say you're acting irrationally,

you are being rude,

why should we listen to you,

why should we agree to you?

And you say,

"No,

but this is what I want,

so I have you have to listen to me,

and I have to do it," and it's it's guaranteed not to work.

But if you pause ahead of time,

and you think,

"I know what I want.

I need to have a discussion.

What's the most productive way of having this discussion?

What's going to be beneficial here to get to the outcome that they'll listen

to me,

and that I'll listen to them,

and that we'll retain our relationship in a healthy manner?

Like how am I going to do that?" So you pause,

and you think it through,

and you say,

"What's going to be a productive way?" You don't just,

on the whim,

go and just say whatever comes to your mind the first thing.

So,

הנאות העולם,

getting pleasure from the world,

and I'm adding another thought,

speech,

speaking in the world,

shouldn't just be done from the urge,

the instinct.

It should be done,

is this going to be beneficial?

That should always be the question.

Is this speech actually going to get the end result that I'm looking to

get here?

Is this eating of food actually going to get the end result that I'm

looking to get here?

I'm looking to be stronger,

I'm looking to be more spiritually orientated.

If I'm going to eat more,

is it going to help me,

or is it going to be detrimental to me?

Most people just don't think.

They just eat,

and they just speak,

and then they regret.

But if you're a thoughtful individual,

then you'll ask yourself this question,

is this לעזר ולסיוע?

Is this physically and spiritually helping me?

שיהיה לו נחת רוח וישוב הדעת למען יוכל לפנות לבו אל העבודה הזאת המוטלת

עליו.

The goal being that you'll be able to be in this world in a

calm manner,

with clarity,

to be able to have freedom in your thoughts,

to be able to do what's incumbent upon you.

If you're just doing whatever you feel like doing,

then in a way you're a slave to your desires.

You'll say I want to serve Hashem,

but you'll find yourself drawn to doing other things.

You'll be drawn to anger as well,

because you didn't get your way,

so you just speak whatever is in your mind.

But if you're someone who has self-control,

and you always ask yourself,

is this going to be beneficial for me?

I'm only taking from the world what I know is going to be beneficial

for me,

then you're in control.

Once you're in control,

and you don't have to think anymore about following desires and these desires and

those desires,

you're the בעל הבית,

you're in control.

Then your mind is more clear.

You can choose to think thoughts that the רמב״ם says at the end of

הלכות איסורי ביאה that a mind that is empty of תורה by default will

go to עריות and go to inappropriate thoughts about men and women.

When a mind is empty of תורה,

that's the default that will come.

But if a person fills his mind with תורה,

then his mind is occupied.

He's thinking thoughts which are value-oriented.

Now I want to add,

it doesn't have to be,

and it doesn't I don't think it means your mind is filled with תורה

meaning that you're you've learned a lot of תורה in the past and you

happen to know a lot of תורה.

There are people who have learned a lot of תורה and still do עבירות

in these areas.

But what it means is that you're actively thinking תורה thoughts.

You're activating your mind the whole time.

You're thinking,

what does הקדוש ברוך הוא want from me?

What is the מצוה incumbent upon me right now?

I'm learning a new ספר,

I'm sharing a תורה idea.

If you happen to have learned a lot of תורה in the past,

then in a way it's on hold.

תורה that you know that you can draw upon when you need to,

but it's on hold.

It's not active in your mind right now.

Your mind right now is empty,

inappropriate thoughts could come.

But if your mind is actively thinking תורה thoughts,

that means that you're you have a ווארט to share,

you share it with someone,

you see someone not doing anything,

you let's talk,

you have a תורה thought,

you learn,

you review משניות,

whatever,

your mind is involved in תורה thoughts the whole time.

And if it's hard to do תורה thoughts the whole time,

you find other productive things to do where your mind is engaged.

But your mind is engaged,

ideally תורה,

if not תורה,

then other things,

but positive things,

where your mind is engaged,

then there's no room in your mind for inappropriate thoughts to come in.

But if you just leave your mind empty,

then it's like putting a stone on the ground,

and when you put it down on the earth,

there was nothing underneath it,

and if you leave it there for a while,

and then you pick it up and you look what's going to be there,

worms and maggots and insects.

And you say,

but when I put that down it wasn't there.

I know,

but there's underlying there's earth,

and that earth has got movement.

Underlying our mind is desires,

and that desires has movement.

If you're activating the mind,

the mind will be activated.

If you don't activate the mind,

then from below there'll be all sorts of desires that man has,

which in theory are good ones,

but without you channeling them to do good things.

Once you're married and you're channeling the desire for your wife in a healthy

way,

then it will all be קדושה וטהרה,

appropriate.

If you haven't yet got married and you're not actively thinking thoughts which are

תורה thoughts or productive thoughts,

then the default will be that those thoughts will come.

A person could just sit,

sit in the room doing nothing,

and the default will be they will think of desireful thoughts.

Where did it come from?

That's the desire,

that's the nature of man.

It's not a bad thing inherently.

It's bad if it controls you,

then it's bad.

It's bad if you just allow it to ruminate and you're thinking about it

and it's in control.

So,

in order for a person to have נחת רוח and ישוב הדעת,

that a person's mind is calm,

and he's got that clarity,

in order that you can turn your heart and turn your thoughts towards עבודת

השם,

you have to have this vision of everything I'm viewing,

I'm benefiting from the world,

I'm always checking that I'm using it for the sake of Hashem,

that it's beneficial.

So he just said that you'll have a calmer life if you do this,

but then he pauses and he says,

but the goal here is not the שלא לשמה,

that's not why we're saying it.

We're not saying it that you'll have a calmer life.

The real goal should be that all of your thoughts,

you should always be thinking about Hashem.

You have no other desire other than קירבת השם,

the desire to come close to הקדוש ברוך הוא,

that you're working and you're learning,

you're a married man,

you're a father,

you may be playing sports and you may be involved in the committee,

you may be doing lots of things,

but everything you're doing,

you always have the same underlying question:

How am I coming close to הקדוש ברוך הוא through doing this?

If I'm a person working in business,

then my mindset's going to be,

I'm doing this in order to finance my family,

בכבוד,

but I'm only going to do it in a way which is going to

bring honor to השם.

I'm checking what the laws are of being honest,

of taking ריבית.

Everything that I do is always going to be in line with the will

of השם,

because my goal here is קרבת השם.

קרבת השם doesn't mean only living in the בית מדרש day and night.

It means being a wholesome individual in all areas of life,

but every area in life that I'm involved in is all bringing נחת רוח

to השם.

So in the way that I'm a husband,

in the way that I'm a parent,

in the way that I'm a businessman,

in the way that I'm a part of the committee,

the way that I'm learning תורה,

in the way that I'm דאווענען,

all of it has the same underlying question:

How is this bringing me close to הקדוש ברוך הוא?

And if you see what you're doing is distancing you,

so let's say you have a particular friend,

and that friend,

whenever you meet,

it goes to לשון הרע.

That's just where it goes to,

it goes to לשון הרע.

So you have to ask yourself,

either can I take this friendship and channel it in a way which is

not going to take us to לשון הרע,

or I can't continue this friendship.

But I can't be in an ongoing situation which I know is causing me

to sin again and again and again.

And if you have a particular device,

and you know that device has some areas which are helpful and productive and

useful,

but it's also leading you to do things which or see things that are

inappropriate,

so you won't allow that to last long-term.

At the beginning when you're trying it,

you don't know,

okay,

so you were innocent at the beginning.

But once you see that again and again and again it's causing you desires

and it's causing you to do inappropriate things,

then that won't last.

You'll say,

my goal here is to be an עבד השם.

Does that mean that that second you throw it away?

Not necessarily,

you can find a solution,

you can figure out how to resolve it.

But if it's not working out,

then you won't you won't say,

okay,

what can I do?

I tried making it work and it didn't work,

so it's a lost cause.

And then you continue in that negative place long-term,

no!

If you're someone whose whole goal is always עבודת השם,

coming close to השם,

then any situation in life you find yourself in,

you're going to ask yourself,

is this bringing me close to השם?

And if it is,

you'll rejoice and you'll continue.

And if it's not,

you'll immediately be looking for a solution,

a way to change,

a way to improve.

Let's say you're a parent and you have kids,

and there's friction,

there's friction.

So you won't say,

that's just the way it is,

what can I do?

You'll say this is clearly not what הקדוש ברוך הוא wants me to be

doing as a parent,

to be shouting at my kids and be upset with my kids the whole

time.

So I'm a parent,

my goal is to come close to הקדוש ברוך הוא.

This is my role right now,

to be emulating השם in educating my kids.

Right,

He's also a מלמד עמו ישראל,

I'm also מלמד my children,

I have to do it in a healthy way.

So I have to I have to find a different way.

Maybe I'll go on a course,

maybe I'll read a book,

maybe I'll speak to a friend who does it better,

but I have to fix this.

And if I'm learning תורה,

and learning תורה for me causes anxiety and friction and I don't enjoy it,

it's not going to continue!

Does that mean I'm going to stop learning תורה?

No!

I'm going to have to find a way to learn תורה in a way

that I connect to and that it resounds with me.

אין אדם לומד תורה אלא במקום שלבו חפץ.

You'll find an area of תורה or a רבי to learn by.

It's some way that you'll learn that you'll enjoy it.

But you won't allow a situation to continue for years,

or even weeks or months,

in a way that's not working,

because your mindset is always:

Is this bringing me closer?

I remember once,

I had a friend who we took different paths in high school.

I went to ישיבה,

he didn't go to ישיבה.

And I met up with him soon after ישיבה,

after my first year in ישיבה,

and we were talking,

and he said to me,

"Oh,

you know what I like?

I like codes." "Codes?" "Yeah,

you know that in תורה,

like if you skip letters,

every 50th letter and then another 50th letter,

50th letter,

then it makes words,

and and you can tell the future from these things." Like,

my whole year in ישיבה,

we never learned about these codes.

"No,

it's really cool." And he started showing me a couple of these codes.

"Okay,

codes." I met up with him a few years later,

and I said,

"How you doing?" He said to me,

"Did you hear about the codes?" So now,

I in ישיבה in the meantime had learned a number of מסכתות,

right,

he hadn't heard of מסכתות,

but the codes,

it was like,

"really cool!" He was in exactly the same place.

So his question was not,

"How am I advancing and coming close to הקדוש ברוך הוא?" From his perspective,

if you ask him,

"What's your connection with יידישקייט?" The codes,

that's it.

And it's static,

it's static.

Maybe he found a new code,

could be could be it's not static,

it could be he advanced a little bit,

but it wasn't a question he was asking himself:

"How am I coming close to הקדוש ברוך הוא?" So he was satisfied with

that level of relationship.

Now,

I'm looking at that and I'm thinking that's probably not the right way of

doing things,

but we do that,

too!

Let's say I hope it's not the case,

but it could very well be that there's someone in this room who דאווענט

today the שמונה עשרה no different than how they דאווענט two or three years

ago.

Their level of כוונה,

their level of understanding,

their level of connection is no different than it was two or three years

ago.

It could be.

It could be that a person becomes satisfied with,

this is my level of relationship with דאווענען,

and then they go on autopilot,

and then when they're 60,

70 years old,

they're still דאווענען exactly the same way!

They're not they're not דאווענען,

they I mean,

they they come come to דאווען and they just like switch off and they

say all the words and they finish and they go back to talking with

their friends about the scores.

But the same level of דאווענינג,

the same deep depth and relationship with דאווענינג they have,

and like I'm like looking at my friend in תורה learning,

I'm saying,

well that's your level of תורה learning,

they're talking about codes and four is it the same thing?

And I said that that's can't be,

you know,

you have to keep learning and keep learning and deepen your relationship.

But it could be we're doing that with דאווענינג.

It could be we're doing that with many מצוות,

that we've got a certain level that we keep that מצוה,

and we're satisfied with that level,

and we remain on that level.

That's it.

And we're not asking ourselves this critical,

critical question of am I coming close to הקדוש ברוך הוא in this area?

And if you're static in the same area year after year,

year after year,

then you haven't asked yourself that question,

because you're not advancing.

So the one question you need to ask yourself constantly again and again is

what I'm doing bringing me close to ה׳?

Is what I'm doing breaking through the boundaries right now that are preventing me

from being close to ה׳?

הנה כל ענייני החומריות והתלוי בהם,

everything in the physical world,

עד שימשך אחריו יתברך ממש כברזל אחר אבן שואבת.

The physical world works like a magnet,

that if you're in its force field,

you'll be drawn after it.

And the world of media works very,

very hard on that.

They'll put pictures of tantalizing steaks you can't say no to and it looks

so delicious,

or there'll be a product which has nothing to do with a woman,

but they'll put a undressed woman today together with that product that you'll say,

"Oh,

if I buy that product,

then I'm going to get that,

too." There's no connection between the two,

but they know that a man has desire.

And a man sees that,

and he's drawn after that,

and then being drawn after that,

together with that product,

you're going to go buy the product,

and they're abusing women,

and abusing man's desire for woman,

which in its core is a very holy matter.

It's the קדושה of a home,

of a בית,

of a חופה,

of the חדר ייחוד,

it's a very holy matter,

and it's being abused and misused to be drawn and put in the force

field of desires,

and then they're playing with you as a pawn,

and encouraging you to develop that desire for their needs,

for the money or the product or whatever it is that they're trying to

get.

The nature you can't fight with.

The fact that we have desires,

we have.

How you relate to that desire is a choice.

If you allow yourself to be drawn after all those desires that come your

way,

and the world is against you in this area,

they're trying to awaken those desires,

so if you allow yourself to be drawn after it,

then you're losing the battle.

So let's just read that paragraph again.

There's a magnet which is a negative force and there's a magnet which is

a positive force.

The negative magnet is the world of the physicality,

that when you're in its magnetic force,

the nature is that you'll be drawn in and you'll have to fight to

get out of.

Once you leave the magnetic force of the desires of this world,

then you're in a safe area,

and you can then choose to channel all those כוחות to עבודת ה׳.

Let's read it again.

ראוי לו שתהיה כל פניותיו רק לבורא יתברך.

You should channel all of your turnings,

all of your looking,

all of your facing,

all of your desires to ה׳.

שלא יהיה לו שום תכלית אחר בכל מעשה שיעשה מקטן ועד גדול,

you should have no other interest in this world,

no other question you're asking yourself at the very basis of who you are

other than להתקרב אליו יתברך,

to come close to ה׳.

That's always the question you're asking in every circumstance:

is this bringing me close to ה׳?

ולשבור כל המחיצות המפסיקות בינו לבין קונו,

your goal is to break all of those boundaries that are a divider between

you and ה׳.

הן הנה כל ענייני החומריות והתלוי בהם,

and all those things that are distancing you from ה׳

are the physical desires,

עד שימשך אחריו יתברך ממש כברזל אחר אבן שואבת.

It's possible to leave the magnetic force field of the desires and enter a

magnetic force field of ה׳,

עד שימשך אחריו,

until you're drawn after ה׳

יתברך,

כברזל אחר אבן השואבת,

like a magnetic force.

Right now,

that seems foreign to many people.

I know what it means to be drawn after my desires for the physical

world,

that's just the default of how I am.

When it's food,

when it's women,

that's just where I go to.

To be drawn after עבודת ה׳

is not natural for me.

It's like I push myself to do it,

but it's not natural.

But once you make it very clear,

this is my whole essence,

this is my desire,

this is what I'm here for in this world,

my goal is עבודת ה׳,

you'll create yourself a new magnetic force field.

You'll say,

it's going to bring me closer to הקדוש ברוך הוא,

that's what I'm here for.

Another מצוה opportunity,

I'm there for it.

A חסד opportunity?

I'm doing it.

A דבר תורה?

I want to hear it.

Once you enter this new magnetic force,

then מצוה גוררת מצוה.

There's also עבירה גוררת עבירה,

but you've left that force field of the עבירה,

עבירה גוררת עבירה.

The one עבירה,

one desire leads to further desires,

and once you open one link,

it's another link,

and once you get hooked,

then you're addicted.

Once you leave the עבירה גוררת עבירה force field,

and you enter,

from your choice,

a desire,

the מצוה גוררת מצוה force field,

then you just can't get enough.

You get addicted.

You want to do more מצוות,

you want to learn more תורה,

you want to do more חסד.

וכל מה שיוכל לחשוב שהוא אמצעי לקורבה הזאת,

and therefore,

this is the guidance that the מסילת ישרים is giving us.

Anything that you see in the world,

anything that could be bringing you close to Hashem,

ירדוף אחריו,

chase after it.

ויאחז בו,

and hold onto it.

ולא ירפהו.

There's a couple of דיוקים I just want to make in this one line.

First of all,

he says a double ספק,

if you noticed:

כל מה שיוכל לחשוב.

Do you hear that language?

It doesn't say,

כל מה שהוא אמצעי.

It doesn't say whatever is a means to get close to Hashem.

It says,

כל מה שיוכל,

and he doesn't say even just יוכל,

he says,

כל מה שיכול לחשוב שהוא אמצעי.

You hear that double ספק?

That means that if there's something which is going to clearly bring you close

to Hashem,

you chase after it.

Something that may bring you close to Hashem,

you chase after it!

There's something that you may think will bring you close to Hashem,

you chase after it!

There's no difference.

It's a ספק ספק,

it doesn't matter.

This is קירבת השם,

this is what I'm here for!

In the same way with money:

if someone tells you you're definitely going to earn money in this,

you'll go for it.

And if they say to you,

'You could earn money into this,' and you want to earn money,

you'll go for it.

And if someone says to you,

'We think that maybe you could earn money on this,' you'll go for it

because you want to earn money.

So here there's a double ספק,

and he still says to go for it:

כל מה שיוכל לחשוב.

And it's not even the קורבה,

but it's the אמצעי,

meaning it's not the end goal,

it's the means to the end.

So hear hear these words very clearly:

even if you're not sure that it's going to bring you close to Hashem,

but it could be,

chase after it!

Anything there is,

any מצוה,

any תורה,

any חסד,

even if it might not be,

but it may be!

רב Rubenstein was in hospital,

and I wanted to visit him.

I desperately wanted to visit him.

We've been learning for over 20 years,

I hadn't seen him for two and a half months.

I wanted to just sit by his side,

give him a ברכה,

ask for a ברכה.

And I said I spoke to his family,

'Can I come?'

And his family said,

'We're not sure if there's any point.

He can't always notice people are there,

he might not know you're there.'

So I said,

'Is there a chance that he'll know that I'm there?'

So they said,

'The doctor said there's a chance that he's aware of what's going on.'

So I said,

'I want to come.'

He said,

'But you're going to be dissatisfied,

because you want you want to come hoping that he's going to give you

a ברכה,

and he might not even be aware that you're there.'

I said,

'I'm not coming for myself.'

Well,

I always want something for myself,

but my main goal wasn't to come for myself.

My main goal is that if it if it could מחזק the רב,

even a small way,

just to come and give him a ברכה,

it's worth it for me.

So I went,

and he didn't acknowledge that I was there.

It was already I mean,

he had ups and downs,

but when I was there was a down.

He didn't he didn't look,

he didn't talk,

he didn't make eye contact.

He was he was awake,

but he was in a daze and and not aware.

But if it could be that it's going to strengthen someone,

even if you're not sure that it will,

but it could be,

and he might not be aware,

and he might not make and you're not going to get a good feeling

from it because he's not making eye contact with you,

but it could strengthen,

it's worth making the trip!

If you're not sure if you're going to find the answer if you go

and ask the רבי,

or if you go and look up in a ספר,

you're not sure,

maybe the answer is not there,

but you might find the answer,

go look it up!

If you're not sure if this is going to be a מצוה and you

It might be that someone else will go do the מצוה before you,

and by the time you've gone to make the effort to do the מצוה,

it's already passed,

but you might get to do the מצוה,

go do the מצוה!

And if you didn't do it,

Hashem will consider it as if you did it,

because you had the will to do it.

Anything that יוכל לחשוב שהוא.

And now,

once you've gone and done it,

then there's also three words here:

ירדוף אחריו,

ויאחז בו,

ולא ירפהו.

ירדוף אחריו means it's not always natural that it's going to just come your

way.

Don't expect that עבודת השם is going to be easy.

If you want to be successful in עבודת השם,

you have to be willing to put in effort for it.

You have to chase after it,

that's stage number one.

Stage number two is,

it's not enough that you show desire,

because even if you chase after it,

you have to hold onto it!

You have to grab it!

A מצוה comes your way,

you have to be constantly,

like משה רבינו,

he wanted to bring עם ישראל to ארץ ישראל,

he didn't see it through to the end.

He wanted it,

he desired it,

he chased after it,

he didn't see it through to the end.

The מצוה wasn't called on his name.

You have to hold onto it.

ולא ירפהו,

and even if you were successful,

don't say,

'Okay,

now I've accomplished it,

that's I've done it,' because the moment you let go,

it runs away.

And therefore,

even if you're not sure you're going to get it,

chase after it,

and And even if you've got it,

don't assume that you've got it.

You have to remain holding onto it so that it won't slacken.

ומה שיוכל לחשוב שהוא מניעה,

he uses the same language over here in the negative.

ומה ש־,

and that's,

I'd say that:

Anything that you have a concern that you might be late for שחרית,

for,

for מעריב,

then even if you want to read one more sentence in מסילת ישרים,

and give a one min-,

you stop in the middle,

because if you can get to ברכו on time,

it's worth it.

This week,

there should be מוסר סדר?
