Welcome to The Figuring It Out Podcast.
At 22, I took the plunge to go on the entrepreneurial journey and start a fitness business, 7 years later I’d been the nutritionist for 2 elite sports clubs and private coach to some of the worlds best sportsmen and women.
Now it’s my mission to show fitness coaches how you can put yourself in a league of their own, become the go to coach, and finally eliminate the self-doubt and imposter syndrome that's holding you back from building the business of your dreams.
This podcast will help you figure out how to thrive and conquer the fear that comes with the lonely entrepreneurial journey.
If fear is the only thing stopping us from achieving our dreams and we only fear what we don't understand, then the antidote to fear is knowledge. All we have to do is find out who has the knowledge that we need to conquer our
Callum Walker:fears and achieve our entrepreneurial dreams. My name
Speaker 1:is Callum Walker, and welcome to the podcast that will help you figure it out
Speaker 2:and conquer this lonely entrepreneurial journey. Hey, everyone, and welcome to the podcast. You can't see this but in my background, there is a massive volcano behind me because I'm in Bali. If you've been listening to podcast for a while, the last few episodes, I was really kind of gearing up for the great Southeast Asian move. Me and my partner, Alice, we have moved to Asia.
Speaker 2:We booked a one way ticket, starting off in Bali. We've kind of got the first six months planned. We're spending two months in Bali, then two months in Thailand, then two months in Vietnam. And really I I think that's as far as we've kinda got planned really. We tried to keep it as open ended as possible.
Speaker 2:Why have we moved out here? Alice has her reasons but if I almost kind of look it for myself. I've been running a business online specifically since COVID. My business was all in person before COVID. So I'm actually ten years into running a business, which is why I look so old and haggard.
Speaker 2:Not really. But yeah, just you know, I've been running my business for seven years online. And what was the point of running an online business that can run from anywhere just outside of London? It was cold, miserable, wet. And since we've been out here, it's been amazing.
Speaker 2:I will do a couple of episodes that go into what it's like over here running a business in greater detail, but that's not the purpose of today. Because the purpose of today, is really gonna kind of kick start a little bit of a five part series for you. All around adherence. For those of you who listen, who are listening and are in my Next Level Coach membership or have been through any of my six week courses from a nutritional point of view, you'll know that adherence is such a sticking point for coaches. Why is it a sticking point for coaches?
Speaker 2:Because there's nothing more frustrating than having a client who signs up with you and just kind of expects you to wave this magic wand and be like, right, make me fit and healthy. And I don't need to do anything. It's never really kind of made sense to me, as to why there are so many people who just sign up to a coaching program and then do absolutely nothing with it. I say, I don't know why it doesn't make any sense to Like it does having understood the Adherence side of things. And I think if we look at life before you can fully understand, what Adherence really is, how you can really influence and inspire your clients to take action.
Speaker 2:Life kind of sucks as a coach, because before you can influence your client, before you have the ability to influence your clients to take action, the problem is that you're just telling people to do something and they just don't respond. And the main issue with that is more, yes, okay, obviously if they don't follow the plan, they're not going to get results. But I think the key thing is more for us as coaches that if we've got people who aren't following our plans, kind of feel more like a babysitter as opposed to a coach. And I know for myself that, I remember just getting to a point where I just hated my coaching. But the reason I hated my coaching was because I wasn't really coaching.
Speaker 2:Was just babysitting grown adults almost kind of begging them to follow the plan. I'm a big believer in when you're faced with friction, you're faced with a problem, you can do one or two things. You can allow it to swallow you up or you can go, okay, right. How am I going to overcome this specific thing? How am I going to tackle this obstacle?
Speaker 2:And I remember I kind of got to breaking point when, there was just this one client and she just, she really took all of the fun out of it. I was like, I need to figure out where I'm going wrong here because I can't change them, but maybe I can change my approach. And that really kind of took me on a path to really understanding influence and adherence. And it really kind of took me to another level from a coaching point of view. So for you, my key thing that I'm going to say to you is that if you're experiencing any adherence issues with your clients, you can't change them.
Speaker 2:But what you can change is your ability to coach and your ability to respond to them. And I promise you that if you can really understand and learn the skill of adherence, life is so much more enjoyable. Your clients take action, your clients get results and more importantly you actually start to feel like a coach again as opposed to just a babysitter who is almost just you know keeping grown adults occupied. So, that's going to be the main purpose of this podcast series. It's really interesting because when I look at the Adherence side of things, it kind of ties in with how I'm approaching this podcast.
Speaker 2:I'll be honest with you, it's been a few... It's been a while since I actually released a podcast episode. Because my focus has been primarily on the move, but also when it came to almost kind of revisiting the podcast, I've got like five core things that I want to share with you. And a really interesting thing was that, my mind then went straight to like, Oh my God, I've got to put together this big podcast episode of five steps and all of that. And it started to kind of get me a little bit overwhelmed.
Speaker 2:It started to kind of get me to a point where I was just like putting it off, putting it off and putting it off. But then I took my own advice and I was just like, one of the main reasons as to why our clients don't Adhere is partly because we kind of overwhelm them with too much information. When we overwhelm them with too much, then they almost kind of like turn to a puddle and they're kind of paralyzed by too much info. So it's almost kind of like the same with me recording this specific podcast episode that instead of going I'm going to put one podcast episode together with five core things what I'm actually gonna do is just break it up into five singular podcast episode, five parts. I'm gonna record one today and my goal is to get one recorded and then that will naturally get me into a flow.
Speaker 2:That will naturally get me into a momentum. So when we almost kind of look at our clients what we want to do is get them into a flow, them into a momentum and really want to kind of help them take the first step. So one of the first things I'm going to kind of pass on to you when it comes to the Adherence side of things is ask yourself the Am I potentially overwhelming my clients with too much information? And I know for myself, I used to do this all of the time, mainly because of like insecurity that like when they first came in, I'd have this fear of I need to make sure that I deliver on the promise. This person's just signed up.
Speaker 2:They've just paid me a good chunk of money. I need to make sure that I can reaffirm to them that they've made a really good purchase. So what I would do is like kind of indirectly try and show them how good I am, how smart I am. But off the back of that, what I would do is I would dump so much info like right okay you've got to do this, this, this, this, we're going to tackle your sleep, your carbs, fasting, this supplement that. And the problem would be they would get so overwhelmed with all of this information they wouldn't kind of know where to start.
Speaker 2:So what I did was that I had to tackle the root cause which was around the insecurity and being like my client isn't interested in seeing how smart I am. My client just wants to know can this person deliver on a result? And the way that we deliver on a result is by getting them to be able to take action and getting them into momentum. And the way that we do that is really kind of down to just helping them take the first step. So one of the key things that I always kind of really like to do, which is the first part of this five things that you can do to enhance your adherence is first of all, how can you help them just take the first step?
Speaker 2:Now the question then becomes, well, what is the first step that we actually need to take to get our clients to be able to adhere? So when someone first comes into our coaching, what's the first thing that we actually need to do? If we don't want to overwhelm them with loads of information, how do we choose what is it specifically that are going to be the first core things that I'm going to share? Now a really key thing that we need to understand in terms of human psychology is that look, although our clients are not coming to us for a quick fix, it's really important that we can get them a quick win. Okay, it's really important we can get them a quick win because at the end of the day we get motivated by results.
Speaker 2:So if we can get them doing something that will really kind of enable them to feel some form of progress, feel some form of result, What that kind of does is that that then kind of gets them more and more motivated to want to do more of the thing. So what I would almost kind of look at is first of all when we're working with someone, first of all identify specifically where they're at, what their obstacles are, what is missing within their diet, what's missing within their overall lifestyle. And then in terms of like your tool care, what are the core things that you could dip into that you know if this person just executed this for the next two weeks they would see but more importantly they would feel some form of progress. Because if they can feel that progress then naturally what they're doing is that they're reaffirming like it almost kind of reaffirms that they've made a good choice with us but also that then gets them into that motivation. So, and and when we're...
Speaker 2:They're almost... Sorry, not get some into that motivation. It gets them into that almost kind of like that flow. It gets them moving, and off the back of that that motivation then will carry them forward. So that's really important.
Speaker 2:So in terms of like a simple action step that you could take, the first thing is asking yourself the question, am I potentially overwhelming this person? Am I potentially overwhelming my client by throwing too much at them too soon? And be honest with yourself, is that coming from almost kind of like an insecurity of I'm trying to show this person how smart I am? Remember, they don't care how smart you are. What they care about is can this person deliver a result for me?
Speaker 2:So once we get past the overwhelm side of things, then what we want to do is we want to go right, okay, out of the things that are in my toolbox, what are the things, what are the strategies that I know based on everything that this person has presented towards me? What are the strategies that I know that can really kind of get this person to experience and get them to feel a quick win within the first two to three weeks of working with me? Because I promise you, if that person can experience a win, if they can experience some form of progress, then naturally what will happen is that their motivation will continue. Because remember, your client will never be more motivated than the point at when they first start with you. So when they first start with you, they're always going to be at their most motivated.
Speaker 2:So what we want to do is make sure that we can take advantage of that. We can take advantage of the excitement, the interest and the inspiration that they've already got. And if we can then go and give them a specific tool that will really enable them to, take the next step, very easily and experience a result, I promise you it will genuinely change the game. And that's one of the core five things that we can do to, really enhance our ability to get our clients to Adhere. So again, like, you know, just check out the next episode because I'm going to go through the second core thing that I would address.
Speaker 2:But if you're really, you know, almost kind of struggling to think like, you know, where, where could I potentially start in terms of giving them the first step that they could take? What would be the core things that would them to experience a result? I've actually recorded a training. It's about thirty minutes in duration. I've left no stone unturned for this where I actually reveal specifically my core strategies that I go to as a nutritionist to get my clients to experience that quick win.
Speaker 2:So if you just click on the link below in the podcast notes, it's... I believe it's called Nutrition Secrets Masterclass. So just click on that and it will really kind of like, give you a clear idea as to exactly, what those first steps are that you can take, to get your clients to begin first of all easily taking, their first step but also getting them to experience and feel that result. Never forget if every one of your clients gave you one new client you've doubled your business.
