Hello and welcome to Reset with Archie Callahan.
It's going to be a great show today.
We're going to be talking about Hebrews 4.12 and the power of God's Word.
Have you ever been cut to the core by somebody else's words?
Mm-hmm.
The Word of God can cut us to the core.
And we're going to talk about how the Word of God will cut us to the core and how the Word of God can transform a man.
Today in our podcast, we have Caleb Willis, big dog Caleb Willis in the house.
And before we get into Hebrews 4.12, I'm going to ask Caleb just to give us a little bit of his story, his life.
He has a great testimony.
He's a young man of 21, 22 years old, and God's really transformed his life.
Yeah, so grew up in church.
It's from South Florida.
I love Florida.
Go Gators.
Oh, come on, man.
That stinks.
I mean, SEC football, it's everything down in the South.
But grew up going to church.
My dad was an associate pastor for as long as I can remember.
At the age of 14, my parents get a divorce, and it was detrimental to me, obviously to our family, but it was a surprise.
Nobody saw this coming.
It was out of left field.
And threw me down a rabbit hole of partying, alcohol, crazy living, everything that comes with party, that whole scene.
And I had an addiction to pornography since I was about 11.
And just threw me into a bad place.
But I was so grateful I had a praying mom.
And I can remember waking up.
I partied in a city called Auburndale.
And I wake up in a city called Bartow.
I blacked out.
And it was about one week after that moment that I knew, all right, and I had an encounter with God.
I was going to the bathroom.
I was walking up the stairs, going to the bathroom, and I was washing my hands, and I heard the Lord say audibly, He said, Caleb, what are you doing here?
And I knew I was in the wrong crowd.
I knew too much of the Bible.
I knew too much of the Word.
And Ward from God TV says it like this.
He says, I was too good of a Christian to be a good sinner, but I was too good of a sinner to be a good Christian.
And I remember that was a Friday night, and that Sunday I ran down to the altar, gave my life to God.
And I said, okay, things are going to change from here.
I separated myself from that friend group.
I separated, and some of them was family.
I just separated myself.
I cannot run with this crowd.
And I'm six years sober, no drugs, no alcohol.
And then I go to a ministry school.
And this is actually where that Hebrews 4 word was so big for me.
I go to a ministry school, and I still have this cycle of pornography.
It's like three months, or it would be like...
a month or six months.
So you were saved, but you were still bound.
You were still in a cycle of defeat.
So guys, it's possible to be saved and still struggle in areas of your life, and you have to outgrow those things.
Absolutely.
Yeah, and how did that take place?
You know, just give me a couple keys.
So one, the biggest thing was the Word of God for me.
I had a pastor who was my pastor at the time at this ministry school.
We were on a small ministry team, and I confessed it to him.
I went over to him, and I said, we had a meeting scheduled, and I said, I'm struggling with this.
I fell.
And when I say we were on a ministry team, we are ministering in front of 1,000 young kids 12 times a year.
And so they're looking up saying, man, this less life is possible, and I didn't want to live a double life.
Yeah.
And I told him and he goes, I told him about the cycle and all those things.
He said, Caleb, he said, I believe the serpent has risen up its head the last time and you need to take the word of God and cut its head off.
Wow.
And I said, okay.
And I'm kind of a real practical person.
If, um, you know, you put your money into a Roth IRA and let it compound and you'll be a millionaire in 30 years.
Okay.
That makes sense.
Do that.
And so when it came, come to this side of things, it wasn't hard for me.
He goes, get 10 flashcards.
Write down 10 scriptures that deal specifically with that issue.
He didn't tell me, go get Deuteronomy 8.
The Lord has given you the power to generate wealth.
He didn't say that.
He said get scriptures that deal with that issue.
The problem you're facing.
So he gave you a prescription almost like a doctor would if you were physically sick.
Right.
And, you know, even when we go to the doctor, if the doctor gives us a prescription, we have the will to choose to take it or not.
Just like you had spiritually, you could have said, man, I'm not going to do that.
And you would have probably remained in that cycle.
Oh, yeah.
But you decided to go ahead and get those flashcards, get those 10 scriptures.
And what happens when you hide the word of God in your heart?
Oh, my gosh.
You do not sin against them.
That's what David said.
And I remember I worked at Longhorn Steakhouse at the time.
Oh, Lord.
I'm hungry.
And I worked the night shift.
I was a server.
And so I remember there was times where I would be at, like, my kiosk typing in the orders, and I would get a temptation that would happen or something, an urge would come in me because what happens is you –
those images don't just always leave in the moment.
And so I'm like, I am going to renew my mind.
I'm going to force myself.
And I remember I took those flashcards and I had them in front of my phone.
So anytime I would go to grab my phone, I would see those flashcards and I would just go through them.
And they were John 8, whom the sun sets free is free indeed.
You know, Hebrews 4.12, it would be 1 Corinthians 6.18, flee from sexual immorality.
It would be Psalm 119.9.
How does a young man stay pure?
He takes heed of the Word of God and all of those scriptures.
And before you know it, I wasn't thinking about, oh, man, I'm 30 days without watching porn.
No, it's like, no, I'm free.
Like I can feel myself.
My desires are changed.
My thought processes are changed.
My patterns are changing.
And there's a quote that I know now from Bishop Tony Miller.
He says, seasons change with time, but cycles change when you change.
Yeah, because you were not looking for behavior modification.
No.
You were looking for life transformation.
Right.
And I think that's what the gospel promises.
It promises life transformation.
We know the starting point of that is becoming a new creation in Christ.
When we're born again, Jesus said, you must be born again.
That is the initial process where...
The Spirit of the Lord lights our candle.
We become a new creation in Christ Jesus.
But you just don't stop there.
You're a new creation.
You're a new baby in Christ, and you have old habits that have to be transformed, and reforming your life takes time.
The thought patterns, the habits, how did you do that?
I did it with a lot of grit and discipline, honestly.
With the help of the Holy Spirit.
Yeah, not just like biting down on my own works and setting me free.
That's not what it was.
It was the Holy Spirit, you know, empowering me.
It was, you know, in Hebrews 4, 12, it talks about the word, but a few verses later, it talks about boldly approaching the throne of grace and mercy in the time of need.
I needed God in those moments.
Oh, yeah.
And I was approaching the throne saying, God, I can't do this by myself.
I need you.
What I did is I – I mean these are some like things that I wouldn't say you necessarily have to do, but I purged my life from anything that would tempt me in that area.
I wanted to build myself up from the ground up.
I didn't want to like – I knew that I was weak in the area of social media.
and so i'm like i'm not going to be on social media i'm going to delete it for a season yeah and oftentimes we think of fasting as just food and it is it literally means to abstain from food but there are some things you need to take out of your spiritual diet right whether it's social media television mute certain types of music if music stimulates a thought or a passion in you that's ungodly
oftentimes the Holy Spirit will empower you and help you to remove that out of your spiritual diet.
So when we look at Hebrews 4.12, it says the Word of God is living, active, operative, energizing.
Mm-hmm.
effective sharper than a two-edged sword piercing as far as the division of the soul and the spirit and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart so that this word cuts to the core yeah it's a two-edged sword when it goes in it hurts when it comes out it heals that's right and so god's not about hurting us he's about healing us but sometimes when we read the word of god
We say, wow, man, that hurts.
So if the Word of God's living, active, energized, and effective, how did the Word of God transform your life?
I think a few ways.
I walk in, and the Word of God renews your mind, I think, first.
Paul said that.
I think it starts in the mind, and then as it renews your mind, you begin to see different.
Mm-hmm.
So your belief system changes and then your behavior changes because all behavior flows out of belief.
And so when we say renewing your mind, it's almost like defragging your mind and reprocessing your thinking, giving your mind a new processor.
So you process things differently.
You see things differently.
You no longer see women as sex objects, but you see them as a person created in the image of God, like a sister.
You begin to purify your thoughts to the opposite sex.
And so that Word of God, and so it judges the thoughts and intentions of our heart.
That's how powerful the Word of God is.
Yeah.
And the Word of God, what's so fascinating about that is, like, we think the Bible can be boring.
But it says the Word of God is alive and active.
Like this word, it came alive to me.
Yeah, it's not static information.
It's not just reading historical facts about kings or Jesus.
This word, it fueled me, and I began to get fascinated with it.
My soul delight was in, or my...
And a lot of those, honestly, a lot of pornography and that kind of stuff, those are crutches for other issues.
Yeah, that's not the real issue.
A lot of it, when I talked to young guys, like when I was in ministry school and got delivered and all those kinds of things, it was, I feel lonely.
I feel rejected.
I feel abandoned.
This happened in my situation.
This happened in my life.
This was my crutch.
This was the place I ran to.
This is my area of insecurity.
And so you deal with those, and that's where –
The Word steadily forms you.
And I'm not talking about just the Bible.
The words of people form you.
Oh, yeah.
And so if you feel alone and that's the words you've been listening to, the music you've been— That's going to form you.
You're going to be formed to be alone.
And what the Bible does is it brings you out of that, and it becomes to rebuild you, reform you, and it starts, I think, like we've been talking about, in the core of who you are.
Yeah, because whatever is informing you is forming you.
So whether the world, the culture is informing you, that's going to form your thoughts.
That's going to form your behavior.
It's going to form your whole life.
So you've got to watch the information that you're taking in.
Jesus said, my words are spirit and they are life.
And you said something that was very important.
You said, you know, pornography is just a fruit of something deeper.
I think for you, it could have been the divorce, the feeling of rejection that came with that divorce.
I believe that's why God says in Malachi 2,
I hate divorce.
God hates it.
He hates it.
It actually means the putting away of your marriage partner, your covenant partner.
He doesn't hate the divorcee.
He hates what divorce does to people.
It fragments people that are made in the image of God.
So do you think what you struggled with maybe came out of that season of divorce?
Oh, my gosh, yeah.
I mean—
there's not enough time to go into it, but imagine you're a 14 year old kid and your superhero falls and you realize Superman's not Superman.
He's really Clark Kent.
Yeah.
And you know, Batman's really just Bruce Wayne.
And you begin to see – and that's where – that could be a flaw on us as humans, making a human a superhero.
I've done that multiple times in my life.
And it doesn't mean – and so that just – it hurt me.
It caused pain.
And I was like, is this true?
There was a point where I didn't want God.
I mean, everything – I was like in a spiral.
It was like in a whirlpool just getting sucked down further and further and further.
But in pain and just running and just I was hurt and created a lot of like, wow, I'm going to do this by myself.
If I can't trust – it was a trust issue.
I could always, if we wanted to be real, you could always trust pornography to show up.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
It's going to show up.
Satan will put it right in front of you.
Exactly.
You turn on your phone.
You look at a show.
It's everywhere.
Temptation is everywhere.
But God makes a way of escape.
That's what he says.
In every temptation.
But we got to be willing to hear God.
Mm-hmm.
You know, I think obedience is the bridge between hearing and transformation.
That I have to be obedient when I hear the voice of God, whether I'm reading his scripture and I hear his voice or I hear the inward witness of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said, my sheep know my voice.
So if I can learn to hear the voice of God and obey the voice of God, it leads me into green pastures.
It leads me into transformation.
So for you, when was that time you said, man, the scriptures became real to me?
When did that happen?
That's a deep question because, honestly, I grew up reading a lot of the Old Testament, and I love the Old Testament because when I went to school, I heard a sermon one time about meditating on the Word and finding Jesus and letting Him be the lens you see Scripture through.
And when I did that, the Old Testament came alive.
Every story of David, I'm seeing Jesus.
Every story of Abraham in Genesis 22, I'm seeing Jesus as the ram coming up on the other side.
The Bible became alive when I saw Jesus rightly.
That's the, and it's like, you know, we say like the greatest levels of entertainment in this world are movies and shows and all this kind of stuff.
And there is so much drama in this 66 books.
That's powerful.
And it come a lot because I'm like, these are real people with real situations.
And like Paul is really doing this thing.
Peter's really by this fire denying Jesus, and Jesus is really showing up to him.
And I think John 1, the word became flesh, became a person to me.
The person beyond the pages was revealed to me.
And when that happened, I was like...
Oh, man, it lit me on fire.
Yeah, because all Scripture is meant to point you to Jesus.
Right.
Jesus understood that well.
He even challenged the Pharisees and the Sadducees on that.
You search the Scriptures.
Right.
for eternal life, but I'm here.
I'm right in front of you.
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, all these books pointed toward me.
I am the fulfillment.
I am the word.
And sometimes we shouldn't study the Bible just for the sake of studying the Bible.
We study the Bible to know God.
And knowing God changes our identity because we come into an understanding that we're not servants of God.
We're sons of God who serve out of sonship, who have been given a stewardship or management over something that God's placed us over.
And sometimes we come to God as beggars when we're sons.
And I believe we are here to serve God, but we don't serve God as slaves.
We serve God as sons.
We have a seat at the table.
He's not pushing us away.
And sometimes we run away from God.
That doesn't change our sonship.
It might change our fellowship.
But the Word of God is powerful.
The Word of God without the Spirit of God is no more than information.
You know what I'm saying?
It's like who wants to read a book just for information?
Some people do, but you're not going to continue to read the same book for information.
So the Word of God is given to us.
It's information, but the Holy Spirit comes in and brings illumination.
That's right.
I'm sure you've read scriptures, man, that just leaped off the pages of the Bible.
I'm like, wow, I didn't see that before.
And when I get those scriptures, I slow down.
I think I was not a very good reader in school, and so the Bible was really the only book I liked.
And so I was really a slow reader.
In third grade, my teacher got me one of these flashcards, and it had a blue line so I could read line by line.
And it really helped me in Bible reading because I'm reading so slow, not rushing through it, not to check it off that I have to read slow for my mind, but it's blowing up in my spirit because I'm reading each individual.
Like in John 4, most people just say, and Jesus needed to go through Samaria.
Whoa, pause.
Jesus needed to go through Samaria?
Yeah.
Exactly.
And then so it's these bombs are blowing up in my spirit.
I'm going, oh, the Bible is coming real and alive and tangible and the spirit speaking to me.
And I was very grateful.
My dad taught me this when I prepped my first sermon at 11.
We're in McDonald's and I had a chocolate milk and a McMuffin.
And he goes, Caleb, anytime God speaks to you.
That was real healthy there, Caleb.
Real healthy.
I was 11 years old, you know.
Didn't have no business preaching, but I mean, hey.
How much does an 11-year-old know?
My sermon was five minutes.
I tried to use a PowerPoint, and I was done literally in five minutes.
It was a 45-minute sermon.
Who were you preaching to?
The church.
Wow.
Was that church desperate, man?
I told my dad I had a word, and he's like, all right.
And he cleaned up the mess and all that kind of stuff.
Good, man.
Good for you stepping out at age 11.
Yeah.
I would recommend it.
Jesus astounded them at, what, 12 or something like that?
It wasn't nothing crazy.
It actually came from 1 Corinthians 13 is what I was preaching on about love.
But my dad told me, he said, Caleb, any time the Holy Spirit speaks to you, you stop and you say, thank you, Holy Spirit, for giving me that.
Because it's not you who reads something cool in the Bible and comes up with it.
No, it's the Holy Spirit.
It's the teacher.
Yeah, and that taught me of a young age to do that.
Yeah, oftentimes we think the Holy Trinity is God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Bible.
Not true.
It's not true.
It's God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit who illuminates the Word of God.
The Word of God is God-breathed, inspired.
We believe it's a God-inspired book.
Sixty-six books written by 40 different authors over 1,500 years.
We need the Word of God.
But without the Holy Spirit, it's just a textbook.
Just a textbook.
And I think that's where...
We can drift so far from the Word of God, and I think that we are seeing a decline even in certain denominations, certain sects of Christianity, because we drift from the Word, and we start thinking we are the illuminator, that we know more than the Spirit.
And that's where you go astray of like,
Well, this Bible says this, and because this translation doesn't say this, the Word of God never contradicts itself.
God's not like that.
And so it's just I have a real passion.
I love the Word.
Yeah, so the Holy Spirit illuminates the Word.
The Word of God is information.
The Word of God, God-breathed, inspired.
God inspired men to write these 66 books.
Forty different people wrote the Bibles.
But it's inspired.
The Holy Spirit comes in as we're reading it and illuminates it.
And then that illuminated word becomes revelation truth to us.
It becomes revealed truth to us that actually becomes the foundation of our lives if we allow it.
And that revelation produces transformation.
That's why Paul says it, and you quoted this earlier, Romans 12, 2, do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed.
What he's actually saying, don't allow the world to put you into its pattern, its way of thinking.
Don't let it create the form that you pour your life into, but be transformed.
That word transformed is a Greek word, metamorpho.
We get our word metamorphosis.
So when we get into the word and the Holy Spirit illuminates it, it becomes revelation.
We go through this metamorphosis, and we are metamorphosized into another person.
So oftentimes we think when Christians get saved initially, we think they're perfect.
You don't go to church enough.
There's no perfect people, man.
We're all in process.
And sanctification, which is cleansing, transformation, the setting apart, becoming like Christ, is a process daily of changing our mind.
And that comes with repentance.
Repentance actually means to have a changing mind.
And so when we hear the Word of God and we know that it's living and active, it can't be something that we just theologically say.
We have to have experience of that.
Oh, yeah.
And so even looking at your life, you've experienced that transformation.
Have you arrived?
No.
I'm a lot better than I was.
I mean, I'm transformed, but I'm not.
I'm not 100% transformed into the image that God is trying to transform me into.
Yeah, can you – let me ask you this, Weston.
Can you remember a certain passage that just stood out to you, man, and changed you and actually shifted your life to another level?
Maybe a verse, maybe a passage.
Probably that, like, really sent me off.
It would be –
Something about the love of God, and that kind of stuff is not really my forte per se, but God began to deal with me about the love of God in Romans chapter 8, Jeremiah chapter 2.
That phrase, it's one verse, but it's three lines.
I remember you, the kindness of your youth, the love of your betrothal.
And in those seasons where I felt like I'd blown it really big and I was too far gone and I messed up, I was like, God remembers me.
And I remember God.
And that's where the story of the children of Israel was so big for me because I'm like, I never want to forget
what God did for me in that Exodus.
Bringing me out, that's the worst thing you can do, is forget what God's done in past seasons.
Now, you don't stay there.
Don't stay in the wilderness.
Yeah.
But don't forget it either.
And God bringing me out of that.
And so, like...
Deuteronomy, those phrases about remember, I literally have it tattooed on my arm.
Yeah, you got to tat it.
Because I never want to forget what God's done in my life and where he's brought me from, and I'm so thankful.
I'm so grateful.
But if I were to say one passage that blew up in me, I would say Hebrews 1, verses 1 through 4.
I spent about – I spent about – well, I studied the whole – Hebrews is my favorite book, and we had a – at the ministry school, we had a prayer room.
So I'd go in there like for two hours, and I would just sit there, and I would read a little bit of Hebrews every day, but I would really slow.
Those four verses, God in various times and in various ways spoke to the fathers by the prophets, but in these last days –
He spoke to us by his son, Jesus, who he's appointed heir over all things.
And it's just blowing my mind because I'm going, Jesus is supreme.
Jesus is better.
I don't need to be like David.
I honestly got tired of that.
Like, we need a Davidic generation.
We need a generation like John.
No, we need a generation like Jesus.
Yeah, Jesus is supreme, superior, far above.
He's the exact radiance of God's glory.
Express image of his person.
Yeah.
And that's where I think we can read the word wrong.
When we read the word in view of the Old Testament law, then you read it as if God is hateful.
And the connotation is actually the love of God is pursuing you and chasing you.
We read scriptures like God is jealous, and we read that as hateful.
God hates mixture, and he does.
But he doesn't hate mixture to the point where he hates you.
Yeah, no.
Jesus came not only to be our Savior, but he came to give us an exact representation of God because people actually distort God.
god they misrepresent god our view of god can be distorted by divorce it can be distorted by pain it can be distorted by rejection and i believe god just got tired of being misrepresented yeah he says i'm gonna come down myself i'm gonna send my son and i'm gonna show the world who i am
And if you want to know God, you can't know God apart from Jesus.
It's impossible.
It's impossible.
Jesus said, if you've seen me, you've seen the Father.
He is it.
And so we need to really focus in on Jesus.
and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the real Jesus to us through Scripture so we get a great view of who He is.
He is a loving Father, man.
He loved us so much that He was willing to give His life for us.
And so as we look at the Word of God, we must understand that the Word of God is living, it is active, it is operative, it is energizing.
But the living Word of God will not work unless we work it.
Mm hmm.
God told Joshua in Joshua chapter 1, meditate on it day and night, and I'll make your way prosperous, and I'll give you success.
He told him that multiple times in the first chapter.
So that word meditate there is a word mutter, which actually means to speak to yourself.
Rehearse it.
Go over it.
Keep saying it.
So it's not the word of God that's in the Bible that sets you free.
It's the word of God that you know that sets you free.
Yeah.
There was one time I got convicted, and I'm not saying – I used to be real, like, radical, like, well, I need to do more, do more, do more.
And there was one time I was in ministry school, and I said, you know, I don't want to get to heaven one day, and Paul – I'm talking to Paul, and, you know, whether that's true or not, I don't know.
And I'm like –
And he goes, how many verses do you know?
And all I can quote off is John 3, 16.
Or Jesus wept.
Two words, that's all I got, Paul.
I got two words, Jesus wept.
That's it, man.
I want to have substance.
I don't want to have more...
music lyrics of songs memorized, and I do the Word of God.
And I'm not trying to get so rigorous and religious about it to where I beat myself.
That's not what I was doing.
It was convicting me that my lack of the memorization of God's Word
And I'm like, I don't want it to be like that.
I don't want the scales of the world to be balanced in the world's favor.
And I just was like, you know what?
I'm going to start memorizing scriptures in Psalm 1.
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the way of sinners, does not stand in the seat of the scornful, does not stand in the way of sinners, and does not sit in the seat of the scornful.
But he meditates on the law day and night, and he will be like a tree planted by the rivers, and he will bear fruit in every season, and his leaf will not wither.
And I'm just like, I'm going to do that.
Meditates on the word.
That's that same word that's used in Joshua 1.
He meditates, meditates day and night.
He speaks to himself the word of God.
It's those flashcards you used.
Now, since this is a podcast that's geared toward men,
What happens, what do you think happens to a man when he submits to the Word of God?
I think that's... I mean, I would think that he is...
bending his knee to Jesus, and he's submitting himself to the word.
Yeah.
And as he's saying, you know what, I think he becomes a better man because his motives are in check now.
Yeah.
His priorities are in line.
And he has a compass.
Mm-hmm.
on how to navigate the terrain that we're in and the adventure of life that we're on.
Because if not, we always cry for freedom, but when a people gets free, like for instance, I have a family member who was always being, I just want to do whatever I want.
I don't want to throw off all the bonds of restraint.
I don't want to have any rules.
I want to be free.
And what happens with that
is now that family member is actually in prison.
Yeah, because when you want to be totally free and not submit to anything or anybody, you actually become a slave to your own passions.
And people don't realize that.
And that is sad, man, because we all have to submit to somebody.
As we close out today's episode, if you were going to leave men with one challenge or one verse of Scripture this week, what would you give them?
What Scripture would you give them?
We've said it already, and it rings true.
Do not be conformed to the patterns of this world, but be transformed in renewing your mind.
And I would say that, like, so true.
Renew your mind by the Word of God this week and say, okay.
And I would give you a challenge.
Try to memorize three Bible verses that aren't short like Jesus wept.
But try to just memorize three Bible verses and quote them.
You're going to look weird quoting in your truck, in your vehicle, driving down the world.
Infiltrate and submerge your life with the Word of God.
Watch your mind.
Watch when you step home and you step to your wife and you're going, I am so grateful for what I have because your mindset's changing.
Or you go to your kids and they run up to you and you're like,
My heart's getting, not that they're bad or anything like that, but my heart's getting turned or whatever because the Word of God is changing me.
It's transforming you into the person God has intended for your life and who He's intended for you.
So the Word of God will cut us to the core.
And when it does that, man, it transforms us as men.
We become better husbands.
We become better coworkers.
We become better employees, better employers.
We become leaders in society.
We become better leaders in church.
Man, God's Word transforms us.
And I believe as God's Word transforms the man, it will transform the culture.
That's right.
