Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter than You Started. It's Friday and as another week reaches its closing chapter there can be a quiet temptation to finish well. Not just well enough. Perfectly. We tell ourselves we'll end the week by clearing every email, completing every task, returning every phone call, Crossing off every item on the list.
Keith:Almost as though the week only counts if we finished with nothing left undone. There's something understandable about that. Most of us enjoy completion. The satisfaction in finishing what we started. There's a sense for order in knowing everything has been dealt with.
Keith:But life is a gentle way of reminding us that perfection is rarely part of the plan. There's always another conversation waiting. Another idea to explore. Another email arriving just as you're about to switch off. Another task that wasn't there yesterday.
Keith:The finish line keeps moving and if perfection is the condition for feeling satisfied well then we may never quite arrive. Friday has a habit of making unfinished things feel more noticeable. The report that's almost complete. The drawer you meant to tidy. The tool you somehow didn't quite get around to making.
Keith:The exercise routine that only happened twice instead of four times. Our attention naturally drifts towards what remains unfinished. Yet something curious happens when we do that. We quietly overlook everything that did happen. The problem you did solve.
Keith:The encouragement you gave. The decision you made. The smile you shared. The moment you stayed patient when it would have been easier not to. Those things count too.
Keith:Perhaps even more than we realise. Because a meaningful week isn't built only from completed tasks it's built from the way we lived that week. The way we treated people. The way we adapted when plans changed. The way we kept going even when things didn't unfold exactly as we'd hoped.
Keith:Perfection has a habit of making us blind to progress. It whispers that unless everything is finished nothing is enough. But life rarely speaks in absolutes. More often it quietly says you've done what you could today and perhaps that's worth listening to. You don't need to finish the week perfectly.
Keith:You don't need every task completed before you're allowed to feel content. You don't need to earn your weekend by reaching an impossible standard. You simply need to recognize that this week like every week before it was lived by a human being. One who made decisions faced uncertainty adapted to change learned along the way and kept moving forward. That sounds like a week worth appreciating.
Keith:So as today comes to a close perhaps instead of asking what didn't I finish? You might ask what can I quietly thank myself for? It may be a much longer list than you first imagined. Today's thought for you. You don't need to finish the week perfectly.
Keith:Thank you for sharing this week with me and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. Lighter than you started is a think of something publishing production.
