Today, we cover Princeton University’s newly launched Humanities Initiative and a presumed report of bird flu.
It’s Wednesday, March 5th.
In campus news, Princeton University is launching a new Humanities Initiative to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and expand the field’s influence. Directed by Professor Rachael DeLue, the initiative builds on the Humanities Council’s foundation, aiming to develop a full Humanities Institute. The institute will support large-scale projects and external partnerships with institutions like the National Endowment for the Humanities and the New Jersey Council of County Colleges. The first major project, “Media and Meaning,” will examine media technologies’ historical and contemporary roles through international conferences, workshops, research fellowships, and collaborations with K-12 schools and community colleges. With over 50 departments and programs contributing, Princeton seeks to strengthen intellectual connections, foster innovative research, and address pressing global challenges through the humanities.
In local news, a bald eagle found in Princeton has presumably tested positive for avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, according to local reports. The deceased bird was discovered on Feb. 14 near Mercer Road and was sent for testing, with preliminary results indicating the presence of the virus. Authorities have warned that avian flu can spread among wild birds and pose risks to domestic poultry, though the risk to humans remains low. This case highlights the growing national concern over the avian flu as poultry farms have been impacted across the country, leading to mass cullings and egg shortages. Residents are urged to avoid handling sick or dead birds and to report any unusual wildlife deaths to local officials.
Today, you can expect rain, with a high of 59 and a low of 46 degrees Fahrenheit.
