This Moment in Israel

The war we’re in didn’t start on October 7th. It started with a mindset, and it could end with one too.

Join Rav Shlomo Katz in unpacking the prophetic and spiritual roots of Israel’s modern wars—1948, 1967, 1973, and today, through the eyes of Chazal and our greatest tzaddikim.

Drawing from the sefer Hilchot Milchama V’Shalom by Rav Shmuel Eliyahu, Rav Shlomo warns us of the mistake we made after the Six-Day War — believing we had succeeded by the “strength of our own hands”— and how that same spiritual arrogance led to the tragedies of Yom Kippur 1973 and Simchat Torah 2023.

But there’s a path forward. The secret weapon? Anavah (humility)—the awareness that all our strength comes from Hashem.

Okay, ישר כוח everybody. I got this, I got this amazing ספר yesterday from יהודה מישל. השם should bless him with safe travels. He's heading out to Camp HASC somehow.

השם should be with him and on everyone that's trying to go. And they want to be safe בעזרת השם. Everyone should be safe.

This is an amazing, a gorgeous thing that we're so lucky that in our generation we have, we have רבנים, we have צדיקים that are really, they really are placing everything, putting it out for us exactly like, exactly like we need. The topics here are just amazing. And I think that the beginning, we're gonna start to do this, we're gonna see בעזרת השם, with the learning that we're doing, how, how, how precious it is to, to learn דוקא these things. Jerry, I haven't seen you.

I love you. I made a few copies here. We're just gonna do the beginning here. I think that there's a, a very key piece here going on with our whole focus during this תקופה.

The there's one מידה that we've been talking about over and over again. Every time we have a שיעור, every time there's a דרשה or anything, and that is the necessity to attach ourselves to the מידה of ענוה, more than ever. It's always true. There's never a time that's like, ah, ענוה is not שייך now.

It's always שייך. ענוה is always שייך. You're going to see with the brief, this is going to seem like history, but it's history, prophetic history that's going on right now. And these are like, it's time right now not just to be learning, obviously, but to really learn in the context of what's unfolding right now.

There's actually another ספר that he gave me yesterday, David. It's from a Rav in your Yeshiva, Rav Levenstein just put out something. You saw the latest thing that he put out? I forget what it's called, but it's also כאילו ממש על מלחמה, on very important stuff. We're gonna, we're gonna be learning that also.

We're gonna take a look at that as well. Some very important stuff. The ספר חרב ודרור was out also, no? Another one? For now? They put another one right now? Right, right. A few months ago.

No, that was on, was on פורים, there was on other stuff. I'm wondering if there's an if hopefully they're putting out another edition now also. They have to keep on renewing it. What's hap, what we're going through is all written in a מפרש in the נביאים.

This is nothing, nothing here is shocking. There's nothing to like, oh my God, could you believe it? Like, yeah, actually. Pretty, pretty much so. I mean everyone's saying it's unbelievable times we're living in, but that's kind of weird because it's actually the most believable times we're living in.

Either we believe in the תנ"ך and we believe that prophecies were meant for דורות, for generations, or we just look at it as כאילו that was שייך for then. But what's שייך for right now? What's שייך for right now? Exactly what was prepared for us. The whole thing was placed in front of us. To learn תורה from him, בפרט on the week that is Abba's יארצייט who just passed this past שבת, is a very special thing.

So I want us to see, just the beginning over here, how, look at what's happened. Okay, look at what's happened, and look where we're going.

Look, listen to this. יחיאל ג'וני, come on, what פרשה is this?

This is the end of ספר ויקרא, which we learned just a few weeks ago, which seems like a few years ago. That all the wars that we ever had, from since the time this, this this state was established, always ended with the war of Like we, like we have that לשון where?

I davened מנחה yesterday next to someone that I, I think he did it a little bit louder when we got to this place in שמונה עשרה so that I would hear. He did an, he pulled, he said על הניסים yesterday in מנחה. Yeah, he said to me before he's like, and I said it in שחרית and I'm going to say it in מעריב.

The חנוכה? No, I was going to ask him, well what, what נוסח did you, I mean, על הניסים I get, but then what did you put in? The בימי who, you know? But that, that's what we're writing right now. But these פסוקים explain exactly the story. And anyone that needs a reminder, refresh your, our, our, our minds and our understanding of the region, how close, how, how large is our country and how large is Iran, ימח שמם? It's a joke.

It's, it's ממש. If you didn't know, you'd think someone's playing a trick on you, if you didn't know. And the first miracle, as we know, happened in תש"ח, 1947, 1948.

In that year, immediately after the decision to say we're going to have a state, we're going to have a country, all the armies of 10, 10 different countries came to try to wipe us out. נלחמנו בהם כמעט בלי נשק, we fought them, כמעט without weapons, בלי מטוסים, without any planes, בלי שום ניסיון צבאי, without any, ניסיון צבאי, without any, uh, experience, military experience.

We fought against experienced militaries that came at us from every single, every single direction. The end result was that the, the size of the country, of the state was much larger than the UN resolution. תוך כדי המלחמה ברחו מאות אלפי ערבים מארץ ישראל בפחד נוראי שכלל אינו מובן עד היום.

And he says what we can't understand till today is that hundreds of thousands of Arabs ran away from ארץ ישראל with such, in such crazy fear, which is hard to even understand. They grabbed what they could and fled. But that's not just a history story.

That was already spoken about where? Sorry, יהושע. And ספר יהושע.

Exactly what was written in ספר יהושע takes place post the whole story of the founding of the state in 1948.

What year is that? It's not that it was all like hippie gatherings between 48 and 67, right? But they came back like the whole to come and attack us. עשר מדינות, this time they're equipped with מצוידות בנשק רוסי חדיש with new revolutionary Russian weaponry.

They opened up with a war against us. That was at a time that most countries refused to sell us planes, weapons, all of the above.

Weapons were purchased. There was from France, the before the war, the embargo comes right as it's happening and then that that those the weaponry that was purchased also doesn't reach us. There were 600 different planes, developed planes that were ready to attack us from all the armies against us.

All Russian, this is important, it's all Russian weapons. Six hours from the beginning of the war, the army, the IDF with a complete surprise was able to demolish 400 of them, mainly those that mainly on the ground before there was any movement even. It's all stuff that we know, context is what we're looking for.

We took out approximately 75% of the air force of Jordan, Syria, and Egypt. Now, what was the real danger that was happening as well? What did, what did Egypt have? What did they centralize? What did they place in Sinai? There were these massive new Russian tanks that were, he calls here, לא חדירים לפגזים, שהיו לצה"ל בעת ההיא, that means that there were tanks that could that any, any army, any Israeli פגז, any Israeli um, artillery miss, yeah, like what the tank is shooting, it couldn't go through these Egyptian tanks.

They were, they were totally bulletproof of that. רבי שמואל says, but when השם wants, then that problem also gets solved. לקראת סוף היום השני של הלחימה, now we're at the second day of fighting.

So in a really weird and unexplainable chain of decisions, the leader of the Egyptian army tells them all to retreat, seven חזיתות, the seven fronts. He tells them all start retreating back in.

He says, you can't understand this either. אלא אם כן, אנו קוראים את הפסוק שמה, but we have to look at the פסוקים, what do they say? I will take care of business and what it basically means is I'll give you all your enemies to you עורף. What is עורף? The back of the neck, meaning they're going, you're going to see the back of their necks.

They're going to be running back with the back of their necks. And then it says in You guys tripping or you don't understand Hebrew? This is insane. This is insane.

The פסוק says they will run away in seven ways. Weiter. I'm, I'm doing this fast because I, I wanna get, we're not learning for three hours now, but this is just, this is mind blowing.

King Hussein of Jordan completely ignores what's going on with the Egyptian army and believed the lie that, of that Nasser, who was the president of Egypt, told him, that told him, listen, the Egyptian army is almost reaching תל אביב. The Jordanian army completely crumbles in two days.

And what took place two days later is that the Israeli army redeems ירושלים, חברון, יהודה ושומרון after 2,000 years that they weren't in our hands. Describing exactly what took place during the Six-Day War. That ירושלים and יהודה ושומרון are both in the same context here is what's calling our attention to show, wait a second, this whole region, this whole thing is connected in one פסוק, had to happen at the same time as well.

When is this? June 1967. The prophet ירמיהו says about the mountains of שומרון: עוד תטעי כרמים בהרי שומרון ונטעו נטעים וחיללו. How many wineries are there right now in the שומרון? Not enough, but.

Yes, you could, you could make up a number. Well, how many, how many wineries are there? Three of them, but. It's incredible. It's incredible.

It's right there. It's right there. I was in recently in one that blew my mind away. I think it was in אילן מורה, couldn't it be? Is there a יקב there in אילן מורה? Definitely שילה, I was just there.

אילן, I think in אילן מורה there's an amazing יקב also. Yes. Yes, these are happening.

And at that moment, like we all say, we grew up on the fairy tale that משיח was already here, he was in the air. Did anyone that was walking around the streets of ירושלים was walking around in such euphoria. But there's one big, big, big, big, big problem that we want to make sure that we are not repeating no matter what.

And I have to say, I feel that עם ישראל is not falling into it right now. Maybe it's because we're still in it, I'm not sure. But I didn't feel Basically the danger that he's going to speak about is something that I feel we're on the right track and we have to get even sharper with it.

You know what that means? How do you say that in English? How would you say that? David, you know how to say that. Right, but so in Hebrew, I mean, it means כאילו, how do you say זחוח? More proud.

More proud. Privilege. There's a word for it, כאילו.

We're good. Yeah. We we got this. Look at us.

Haughty. Haughty. Smug. Haughty, yeah.

Look at that. The the AI wars in the room.

We thought we won with our own might and strength. You know what? It has to be that we actually thought that we did it. Why? Because otherwise, would you ever imagine, I forgot his, I forgot exact role, but משה דיין, what he did right after this happens, where he goes and he says, this is amazing, but we're coming back home after you've been robbing it for so many years, but the bedroom, I'm going to give you back the keys to the bedroom. And he gives the ווקף the keys to to as we all know, so we're suffering from from from from ever since then.

He gives them the keys of הר הבית. And it obviously came from a place of, listen, if I conquered it, I can decide what to do with it. I did it, right? אני יכול להחליט, it's mine, it's my decision, right? And this is a danger, we got to be really, really, really careful from.

The תורה warns us, where did you get the strength to do what you did? Yes, yes, you did it. It's true. You did it.

He is the one that gives you the strength to do it. And it's the same thing, obviously, whenever anyone has a good kup and he's smart in business and he's able to crack codes, figure things out, make the right deals, make the right investments, or a doctor, you know, all the more so, that he's learned medicine, he knows how things work. But a יד has to constantly be in checker with הוא הנותן לך כוח לעשות חיל.

And and he says of here, התורה מזהירה אותנו, the Torah warns us not to forget that it's השם that gave us the כוח. גם קיבוץ הגלויות מ-102 מדינות, the in-gathering of exiles from 102 different countries. And the land starts to blossom and give us its fruit in such a beautiful way.

הניצחונות החוזרים ונשנים על אומות העולם, the repeated victories over nations of the world. החכמה הגדולה שמתגלה בעם ישראל, the amazing wisdom that is now being revealed within the עם. which השם should send the רפואה שלמה to the Weizmann Institute. We don't even understand what happened over there.

חס ושלום, there were no פגיעות בנפש, but עוד ידברו על זה, we're actually, we haven't even because we're still in the state of emergency that we're in, that, that פגיעה in the Weizmann Institute has a lot, a lot of symbolism to it. A lot. You know, the Weizmann Institute is in רחובות, right? There's a lot of symbolism to it. That it took out our knowledge.

Yeah. It's the medicine. It hit the cancer research center, בעיקר, that was the one that I think got hit the most. We we'll speak but but it's it's wild.

It's wild. It's all השם's that's being revealed through us, but the תורה warns us.

Don't forget who's working behind the scenes. You have to be very careful to forget השם. Not when you're depressed and you're forgetting that השם's there with you.

On the opposite, when you're when you're when you're flying, that's where you have to be really careful not to forget a בורא עולם. השכחה הזאת אורבת לפתחנו כשאנחנו מצליחים, because whenever we succeed, that that that forgetfulness is always there ambushing us on the way to real victory. As it says, the פסוק says, פן תאכל ושבעת ובתים טובים תבנה וישבת, ובקרך וצאנך ירביון וכסף וזהב ירבה לך, וכל אשר לך ירבה, you're going to have more and more and more and more and more, and then what's going to happen? You're going to have such amazing successes in wars and then you're going to forget a בורא עולם.

You think the, you think the success is all yours. It's me, I worked hard for this.

I worked so hard for this. But you have to remember that it was a השם that gave, that gave it to you.

You remember that it was a השם that gave you the strength to do this. Now, what years was he was he speaking about over here? The last two paragraphs? 67 to 73. 67 to 73. Comes 1973, מלחמת יום הכיפורים, and everything that we were, that he speaks about here, the prophets and the Torah warns us about, blows up in our face.

ניצחון מלחמת ששת הימים, the victory of the Six-Day War, והעושר שבא בעקבותיה, הביאו אותנו לגאווה. It brought us to pride, not the kosher pride.

And you know who felt this? He's calling out something so amazing. You know who sensed that we forgot השם? Our enemies. אויבינו הרגישו בחולשותינו, our enemies felt our weakness, ניצלו את הזחיחות שלנו, they took advantage of the haughtiness, ותקפו אותנו ביום כיפור כשאנחנו לא מוכנים.

You realize the two dates that we were attacked most unready were the days that כביכול resemble utmost attachment to השם. יום כיפר and the year and 10 months ago, שמחת תורה. The enemy, ישמעאל, senses this. They smell גאווה from a million miles away.

They smell גאווה from a million miles away. You think that the, that the IDF didn't have warnings that this is happening, this is happening, this is happening for '73? They did. But what did they say to themselves? These people would never dare mess with people that messed with them the way we did.

And all those warnings were all just thrown away. We wouldn't, couldn't even fathom somebody have the חוצפה to start with us. We beat all our enemies in six days.

Now, I don't know exactly the numbers and I don't know how long it exactly lasted, but the first few days, the first few days of the Yom Kippur War, we suffered blows that there was a real sense of, this may, this really may be the end. This actually may be the end. Just like ספר יהושע.

Yeah. The first מלחמה is everybody's tuning in that it's השם, and then, and then, got this. I think he's even going to get there.

We did wake up in the middle, and with חסד that is unexplainable from שמיים, we woke up and we flipped the story of the war in the middle of it, but the casualties were nuts. You know, every school that I ever went to in Israel had a plaque, and the plaque of course was like the, the, the, you know, the alumni that have been killed, like these faces are in front of me my whole the, these are faces I looked at every day, כתה ד', ה', ו', different ישיבות, schools, and now, I'm sure there are new one, I'm sure by you there's probably yet, right? How many, how many were lost by you? In this war? Yeah? 29. So these are, there's faces, דוקא from the Yom Kippur War. The Yom Kippur War.

My whole childhood, they're right in front of me. They're right in front of me. Now they didn't really tell me when I was a kid that the Yom Kippur War was a real, real, real, real big, painful, started off as a very big, painful כישלון. We only spoke about the גבורה side of things.

And here, it's not going to shock you for the first time, but it's one of the big תיקונים that I know you all by now understand what I mean when I say that within our ציוני, דתי, לאומי worlds, we need to really acknowledge and plug into this in that some big things got messed up within the, within the worlds that we're fighting this war. Big time. That's Yom Kippur. Then comes, and we're ending with this.

The same exact energetic story that took place on יום כיפור was the story of עם ישראל in ארץ ישראל, שמחת תורה תשפ"ד. Same thing. October 7th, it's the same mindset.

The same mindset. Everyone's fighting now over who woke, who up, who wasn't woken up. What did we think that they were enjoying their ששבש tournaments on the by the גדר, by the, by the border? We all knew there, and they were, if you remember, the year before שמחת תורה, they were constantly הפגנות on the גדר.

They were testing us. They were testing every and we all knew it. We all saw it, but the גאווה came and said, they'd never. They'd never.

Who are they? They know what we've built here. They know about the wall that we've built. Who, they'd never. They don't have an air force.

And these בני עוולה come on the glide, ממש, it's an amazing thing. They come gliding into the, I think from everything, from all the footage that I saw, the things that astonished me the most was the chill that these animals had while walking around the קיבוצים and on the highways. I didn't see anyone running. They were walking around.

Chill, walking around. Because they smell that from miles and miles away, and they know that when we're wrapped around גאווה, that's, we have no מגן. The army had all the plans of the terrorists as well.

But again, the same thing of of ignoring took place. And maybe all the מחלוקת that took place in that time also brought us to such a horrible failure.

When you learn in the נביא, the whole story of שאול and דוד, you almost wonder like what was going on over here? They they they what, this is a strong, strong army that's still not able to bring down any יראה on their enemies because the פלישתים kept on coming up with such חוצפה and and and picking, picking fights and wars with us. And the גמרא, and the ירושלמי says like this, אמר רבי אבא בר כהנא, דורו של דוד כולם צדיקים היו, ועל ידי שהיה להם דילטורין, which means they were בעלי לשון הרע, היו יוצאים במלחמה והיו נופלים. They were great warriors, they were צדיקים, he even says.

But they were able to speak ill about other ידים, and the minute when they went out to war, all their צדקות didn't stand for them, didn't matter. אבל דורו של אחאב, עובדי עבודה זרה היו, and the generation of אחאב, they were all idol worshippers, ועל ידי שלא היה להם דילטורין, but the one thing they didn't have is this inion of speaking ill about another י, היו יורדים במלחמה ונוצחים. So what שמואל did for us is he painted a picture of exactly where we caught ourselves a year and ten months ago. And since then the שאלה has been, have we really learned our lesson? Have we ממש learned our lesson or not? And that's why the מדה of ענווה is, like, we can't control how all of עם ישראל interprets what's going on right now.

But in our own דלת אמות, like what we could do for ourselves is beg השם יתברך to please plug us into this מדה that it should be a שמירה on עם ישראל בעזרת השם יתברך. And to learn and to listen, to look at the פסוקים and to continue to, like we said, עם כלביא גמטריא גל עיני, lift up our eyes. Lift up our eyes to gaze at the world from a new place that we haven't yet until now, and I think that בעזרת השם, I think we are. I really think we are.

It should just continue
