INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M TALULA HAYES.

IN THE NEWS TODAY,

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
Center for Disease Control cancels release of study results showing the benefits of the COVID vaccine. The study results would have verified that the vaccine sharply cut the odds of hospitalizations and emergency visits according to a Health Department spokesperson. The acting CDC head Dr. Jay Bhattacharya objected to the study’s design and said it painted an inaccurate picture of the vaccine’s effectiveness. The study was conducted by the CDC and found that the vaccine cut the likelihood of emergency visits by 50% and hospitalizations by 55%. It was scheduled to be published on March 19 in The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the C.D.C.’s flagship journal. The approach employed in this research has been used for years by scientists at the C.D.C. and elsewhere to gauge the real-world performance of flu and Covid vaccines. Dr. Bhattacharya met with the study’s authors but they had not wanted to change its design so he refused to let it be published.

IN INTERNATIONAL NEWS,
A jet fuel shortage and the barriers of travel created by the Iranian war could lead to summer travel complications. The shortage is occurring primarily in Europe and Asia. In Iran, the deterioration of the agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has led to higher airfares and flight cancellations. Crude oil prices dropped Friday after Iran’s foreign minister allowed tankers and commercial vessels to pass through the strait. Trump claimed the U.S. would continue its blockade of Iranian ships entering or leaving the strait. The oil market is expected to take months to recover. Air Canada said Friday it would cancel services to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport between June and October due to the higher costs. Jet fuel is an airline's largest cost, covering about 30% of overall expenses. Its prices have doubled since the war began. The International Energy Agency Director said Europe had "maybe six weeks” of supplies left.

IN ECONOMIC NEWS,
Trump’s approval ratings regarding the economy in the AP-NORC poll have dropped. As the Iran war has increased prices, even Republicans have less faith in the current leadership. Trump ran on a campaign promising to lower inflation for Americans. The conflict in the Middle East has gone longer than expected, reaching nearly eight weeks. Trump’s approval rating on the economy dropped from 38% to 30% in April. Only 32% of Americans approve of Trump’s leadership and actions in Iran. This poll was conducted between April 16 and April 20, where the Strait of Hormuz was reopened and then closed again by Iran. Gasoline prices have jumped following attacks on Iran in February, and the tariffs have kept the economy stagnant. This could create problems for the Republican party as it tries to keep seats in the House and Senate majorities in the midterm elections.

PASSING IT OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE
Brewers turn things around, look to move up in standings. The Brewers responded to their six game losing streak by winning five of the last six with series wins over the Blue Jays and Marlins. Even though their recent success has moved them to 13 and 9 on the year, they still sit in 4th in the NL Central. The NL Central has been far and away the best division in the MLB early this year, with all five teams in the top 10 of the MLB standings. The Brewers are currently 8th in the MLB, 0.5 a game back of division rival Chicago Cubs. They opened their series against the Tigers with a dominant win, leading 12 to 1 entering the 9th inning. The Tigers are currently 12 and 12 this year, but that was only their second loss at home on the season. DL Hall will take the mound against Casey Mize hoping to lock down another series victory. Hall is 0-0 and Mize is 1-1. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:40PM.
