What is PW Podcast?

Join me on a journey exploring the ups and downs of being a creator. I make things across many mediums including apps, games, and podcasts. Along the way, I take the side roads to motivation and inspiration. Navigating the winding paths that try to stop us from achieving our dreams and goals.

Hello everybody. Welcome to the new episode of the PW Podcast. I'm your host, Peter Whit, as always, and if I sound a bit funny in this one, yes, I am getting over a really heavy cold and it's a little frustrating because I've not really been able to record a podcast or anything.

No live streams, no nothing. That involved me speaking for about a week now because it's important. To have a good, clear voice when you are doing something like a podcast. And I think hopefully I'm at a point where it's okay now, still got that cold thing going on, but I think the voice is okay.

Hey, why don't you let me know? Reach out to Peter Witham.com. Anyway, in this episode that's a little bit of what I wanna talk about is how you handle things when you're sick. And I've touched on this before, but I wanna touch on it from the perspective of. Knowing when to just say, all right, okay, I'm going to give into it and not even try if until you are, you're healthy again.

Because just like with the podcasting I couldn't do any live streams. It was n on impossible for me to focus on anything as far as projects or anything like that. And I just had to give into it for the most part. And. It is really frustrating. I even, it was so bad I took some time off work because I literally like last weekend, could not get outta bed.

I think I slept for 14 hours or something like that. And my advice to you is don't try and fight it. When you've got something like that going on, give into it. The quicker you give into it, work on it. You'll get over it quicker and then you can get back to what you want to do. The more you try to fight it and the more you try to do it, the, I guarantee you, number one, you are not gonna do your best work.

And number two, it's gonna continue to punish you, right? So just listen to your body is my advice there, because I tried even just making some notes and some plans. And two seconds later, my, my brain was just completely full of ugh again, and I just had to give up. And as much as I went to get stuff done it was, it literally was impossible, let alone trying to stay awake.

Now, that said I was able to catch up a bit this week and what I'm talk about here as well. Is I have released a new version, new update of my Job Finder Tracker app on iOS. I'll put a link in the show notes and I'm really pleased with this version. And it's funny how this one came around and I wanna talk about it.

For those of you who may be app developers out there, this might be something to think about because. What happened was I built the Android one, I think I've mentioned it on the podcast before. I'm getting ready to release it, doing the screenshots and the store stuff and all those kind of things. And the Android one actually has.

More features, features that I want to have in the application than the iOS version, which then means you have to go back to the iOS version and say, okay, I should put the features in there because they're really good features. And thankfully this week I was able to do that. It was a case of do the day job, come home, rest a bit to, to recover from being sick, and then crack on with the app changes.

Now what the change is I think is a really important one, and one that was requested by a. Some of the users, and to give you a sort of quick rundown here you can go to PeterWitham.com slash jft to find the app, but the app is designed to let you put in details for tracking jobs jobs you might and want, apply for job applications, keep the status updated, have you interviewed, and so on.

But one of the things that bugged me about it was it only allowed you to create one resume. And I've now added the feature from Android that allows you to create as many resumes as you want, and you can go into your job listings, or when you create a new job listing and you can attach that particular resume to a job.

For example if you're like me you're a software engineer, you may have a resume specifically crafted. To appeal for software engineering positions. So now I can attach that to those job listings. The thing that I do during the day as well is I'm an engineering manager a managerial resume is gonna look different than that, right?

So I can now apply that to managing positions apply this to your situation, whatever it is. I'm just using this as an example, It also brings up an important topic, which is you really should have more than one resume and that's what drove this feature, was recognizing that different jobs require different styles of resumes.

You can highlight different things. And now you can store those more than one of those in the application and track them in there. You can hit a button to share them with folks, which of course is another important feature. And then that's actually disabled right now on the iOS version.

'cause there's bugger I want to fix. But the point being is that the Android one jumped ahead with features and I've now incorporated those features into the iOS one. Probably by the time you are listening to this podcast, it may well be updated in the store or within a couple of days of the release of this episode.

So I'm excited about that. And then that now frees me up to go back to the Android version and complete the store work so I can release the initial Android version, which I'm also very excited about. And then once I've got that off my plate, I can then start to look at my game development again. It's been a.

A catch up in the latter part of this week. It's a Saturday today, April 4th, and so it's been a catch up for me to do these things. Thankfully, I'd already planned them out on paper, so it was just a case of sit down and follow my plan. So that's getting me back on track, but I still feel that I'm behind from being sick, especially with podcast episodes.

So that's why you are hearing this one right now and I've gotta do some others. And that I did have time to do a fun episode. Of the Compile Swift podcast that we actually wrapped up in August last year, but we just couldn't resist to doing an April Fools version. And if you have already heard it, I hope that you realize it was an April Fools edition.

And if you haven't heard it, go check it out and I'll talk about that a little bit here 'cause it's funny. We wanted to do an episode of the podcast as a special release talking about. One of the very early versions of the iPhone OS release. And the interesting part about that, and the funny part was, and I was able to do the record this before I got sick thankfully, or too sick, but it's actually, turns out it's really hard to.

Talk in the past tense on something technical like that because we had to keep myself and Geoff the co-host, we had to keep catching ourselves and saying, oh wait, we can't talk about this yet. It doesn't exist in this context because we're talking about something from, I think it was like 2006, something like that.

And we had to keep reminding ourselves, the things that don't exist yet, right? So we're talking about I think it was like the third version of the iPhone or something like that. And we had to remind ourselves, look, the Apple Watch doesn't exist. The update, those super cool iPads barely exist.

And, all these kind of things and it's actually a lot harder to do than you think. So we had a lot of fun with that. But anyway, if you check it out, go to Compile Swift dot com. It was a joke, folks, so please and I actually intentionally made the audio sound, I don't wanna say bad, but sound like it was streaming internet audio from early two thousands, which it's questionable whether I got it right, but that was the intent.

To make it sound like an early recording with not the best audio quality. 'cause I'm sure some folks are like, this sounds terrible. And that was the idea. But anyway, just wanted to share those updates with you this week and give you some things to think about. I hope that April is gonna be a very productive month for me.

I got a lot of app updates planned. I got a lot of game updates planned. I gotta get some stuff out there and that, and I gotta catch up on blog posts so badly. But anyway, I want you to share all that in this episode. Hope you are having a great month so far and I'll speak to you in the next one.

See you later folks.
