Here is what we are covering. Let's start with some fascinating marine research. A collaboration between McGill University, Natural Resources Canada, Université du Québec à Montréal, and Dalhousie University has resulted in a unique monitoring network in the Lower St. Lawrence. Right. This network can simultaneously track earthquakes, water behavior, human activity, and even whale calls. Interestingly, during its operation, it detected twice as many earthquakes as the National Earthquake Monitoring System. That's impressive, but it's worth mentioning that the network only ran seasonally from September to May, between 2023 and 2025, in just one specific estuary. So, we don't yet know how it would perform over larger marine regions or longer periods. Exactly. And their findings have been published in the journal, Seismica. Moving on to the economics of scientific publishing, it's a massive industry with an annual turnover of around 19 billion US dollars, or about 16.67 billion euros. And those are some hefty margins, around 40%. What's striking is that a lot of this revenue comes from research funded by public money. Yes, and a small group of large commercial publishers like Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, and Sage dominate the market. This really highlights the scale of the issue and its history. The discussion is leaning towards open access as a solution, although no specific changes have been implemented yet. Now, let's talk about Greenland sharks. Researchers at UC Irvine have discovered a DNA mechanism that might help these sharks maintain their vision over centuries. That's right. It's early-stage research, but the implications are exciting. It could eventually inform efforts to preserve human vision. Although, we should note that the details of how this mechanism works, and how it might apply to humans, are still unclear. On to some good news about hip replacements. A large international study suggests they might last much longer than we previously thought. That's especially relevant since more people are getting hip replacements at younger ages. The durability of these joints over decades of active life was a big question. And the study's findings are promising, indicating longer durability than earlier estimates. Finally, let's discuss trees and carbon absorption. Research from the Columbia Climate School at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory found that oak trees keep absorbing carbon dioxide long after their annual growth has ended. This suggests that photosynthesis and wood production aren't as closely linked as we once believed. It could mean forests store less carbon in wood than current climate models predict. Which might reshape forecasts of forest carbon storage in a warmer future. However, the study doesn't quantify how much less carbon would be stored overall, or whether other uses of that carbon, like leaf production, might offset the reduced wood storage.
