Welcome to today's podcast. In this portion from Behar, we delve into the laws regarding the redemption of fields. The Torah discourages the permanent sale of inherited land, emphasizing the importance of keeping it within the family. When a person falls into financial difficulty and sells their field, the closest relative—be it a brother, uncle, or great uncle—has the duty to redeem it.
Should the original owner manage to save up money, the redemption process involves careful proration. The remaining value of the lease is calculated based on the years left until the next Jubilee year. This ensures a fair transaction, restoring the field to its rightful owner. However, the courts can only force this process if it’s an all-or-nothing situation.
