Wealthy Woman Lawyer Podcast, Helping you create a profitable, sustainable law firm you love

In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, host Davina Frederick invites you to think about a question many law firm owners rarely stop to fully consider: What would actually change in your life if your firm reached seven figures in revenue?

For many women attorneys, revenue goals are often discussed as business milestones. But this episode explores a deeper perspective—how crossing a major threshold in your firm can transform far more than the numbers on a financial statement.

Davina paints a vivid picture of what becomes possible when a law firm grows beyond the stage where the owner carries everything alone. The conversation moves beyond traditional metrics and looks at the broader ripple effects that growth can create in your daily experience, your decision-making, and the way you design your life as a business owner.

This episode challenges the idea that financial growth is simply about making more money. Instead, it explores how expanding your firm can open doors to new levels of freedom, confidence, and opportunity—both professionally and personally.

If you’ve ever wondered whether aiming higher is really worth it…

If you’ve questioned what life could actually look like on the other side of the next level…

Or if you’re ready to think bigger about what your law firm can become—this episode will give you a powerful new lens through which to view your future.

Tune in to discover why seven figures represents far more than a revenue goal—and how the life behind that number may be closer than you think.

Intro:

Now here's Davina.

Davina:

Welcome back to the Wealthy Woman Lawyer podcast, the number one podcast for women in law who are building wealth generating law firm businesses that give them the profits, the impact, and the flexibility they truly desire. I'm your host, Davina Frederick, and I am so thrilled you chose to spend the next thirty minutes with me today. I want to start today's episode with a question, and I want you to really sit with it rather than just answer it reflexively. Here it is. What would actually be different about your life if your law firm generated $1,000,000 or more in annual revenue?

Davina:

Not your firm's life. Your life. Your actual personal daily experience of being alive in the world. Would you sleep differently? Would you make different choices?

Davina:

Would the texture of your mornings feel different? Would the Sunday night dread you might be carrying right now start to lift? Would you finally take that trip? Finally invest the way you've been meaning to? Finally feel like you have enough of a cushion that you're not one slow month away from anxiety?

Davina:

I'm asking because today's episode is about exactly that. The title is Why Seven Figures Isn't Just a Number, It's a Different Life. And my goal today is to give you the clearest, most honest, most detailed picture I can of what life genuinely looks like when your law firm crosses that threshold and stays there. Not just the income, though yes, we are absolutely going to talk about the money, but the freedom, the security, the choices, the relationships, the sense of self that shifts when you are operating a 7 figure law firm business. Because I think a lot of women law firm owners have a vague abstract sense that they want to earn more, but abstract goals don't move us.

Davina:

Vivid, specific, emotionally resonant visions do. And by the time we're done today, I want you to have a vision so clear that it pulls you forward even when the path feels hard. Let's get into it. Before we paint the picture of seven figures, I wanna spend a few minutes being really honest about what low 6 figures actually looks and feels like because I think we often accept it as success when it's actually a very expensive cage. Let's say you're bringing in $150,000 to $300,000 in annual revenue.

Davina:

On paper, that sounds like a lot. And compared to the average American salary, it is. You are doing well by any conventional measure, and I don't want to dismiss that. But let's look at what that actually means when you run it through the reality of owning a law firm. You have overhead, rent, software, malpractice insurance, maybe a staff member or two.

Davina:

You have self employment taxes. You have the cost of client acquisition. By the time you account for all of it, the actual take home that lands in your personal account and builds your personal wealth may be a fraction of that top line number. And in exchange for that take home, you may be working fifty or sixty hours a week, carrying the mental weight of every client matter, being personally responsible for every deadline, every phone call, every crisis. So the real question isn't whether $200,000 in revenue sounds like success.

Davina:

The question is, what are you giving up to generate it? And is the exchange worth it? For a lot of women law firm owners, the honest answer is no. The exchange isn't worth it. They are paying for that income in ways that don't show up on the income statement in exhaustion, in missed moments, with their families and deferred dreams, in a creeping sense that they built a business to have freedom and somehow ended up less free than they were before.

Davina:

I've heard this from so many women in my community. I thought owning my own firm would give me control over my time. Instead, it owns me. And here is what I want to say clearly. The solution is not to scale back.

Davina:

The solution is not to work fewer hours at the same revenue level and simply accept a smaller income. The solution is to scale up to build a firm that generates significantly more revenue with a business model that doesn't require you to personally carry every bit of it. A firm where the revenue comes not just from your hours, but from the infrastructure you've built, the team you've developed, the systems you've put in place, that is the path to a different life. And it starts with getting honest about the limitations of where you are right now. Let's talk about the money.

Davina:

I know some of us have been conditioned to feel uncomfortable talking about money directly, to couch it in softer language, to not come right out and say, I want to be wealthy. I want significant financial abundance. I want money to be something I've mastered rather than something I'm managing. So I'm going to say it plainly, a seven figure law firm changes your financial reality in ways that compound and multiply over time. And you deserve to understand exactly what that looks like.

Davina:

First, let's talk about margin. At the low 6 figure revenue level, you're often running on thin margins because the overhead is high relative to revenue, and your personal time is your primary resource. As revenue scales, particularly as you bring on a team and build systems, margins often improve significantly because the fixed costs don't grow proportionally with revenue. That means as you grow from $500,000 to $1,000,000 to beyond, you're not just earning more you're often keeping more per dollar earned. Second, seven figures create something that low six figures almost never does genuine discretionary wealth money that is not earmarked for business expenses, not needed for the next payroll cycle, not held in reserve as a personal stress buffer.

Davina:

Actual surplus that you can invest in real estate, in retirement accounts, in your children's education, in assets that generate passive income. This is how attorneys who build 7 figure firms create lasting generational wealth, not from the revenue itself, but from what they're able to do with the surplus that revenue creates. Third, 7 figures buys you something that is almost impossible to put a price on financial resilience. When your firm is generating strong, consistent revenue above $1,000,000 a slow month doesn't trigger a crisis. An unexpected expense doesn't derail your personal finances.

Davina:

A difficult client situation doesn't feel existential. You have the financial cushion to make decisions from a place of strength rather than desperation. And that changes everything about how you run your firm, how you negotiate, how you choose clients, and how you show up every single day. And fourth, and this one matters deeply to me personally, 7 figures gives you the ability to be extraordinarily generous, to pay your team well, to invest in their growth and development, to contribute to causes you believe in, to help your family in meaningful ways, to build something that has a positive ripple effect far beyond your own bank account. Wealth is not just personal.

Davina:

It is a tool for impact. And the more of it you have, the more good you can do in the world. The money truth is this. 7 figures is not about luxury or ego. It is about options.

Davina:

It is about security. It is about power. The power to choose, the power to give, the power to build a life that is genuinely yours. Now let's talk about the piece that I hear women in my community describe as even more motivating than the money itself, freedom. Because here is the paradox that traps so many law firm owners at the low 6 figure level.

Davina:

They became entrepreneurs in part because they wanted freedom. Freedom from a boss telling them what to do. Freedom to practice law the way they believed it should be practiced. Freedom to build something of their own. And what they often find instead is that they've traded one form of constraint for another.

Davina:

They no longer have a boss, but they have dozens of clients who all feel like bosses. They have complete control over their schedule in theory, and almost no control in practice because every hour of every day is already spoken for. Seven Figures changes this, not automatically. You don't just cross a revenue threshold and suddenly find yourself with wide open days and a team that runs everything seamlessly. The freedom is built intentionally alongside the revenue.

Davina:

But the two are deeply connected. Because at seven figures, you have the resources to hire the team, build the systems, and create the infrastructure that makes real freedom possible. Let me be specific about what that freedom looks like because I want this to be visceral for you, not abstract. Freedom of time. Women who run 7 figure law firms tell me they have something that felt completely unimaginable when they were grinding through the low 6 figure years, unscheduled time, time that belongs to them, time that doesn't have a client's name on it or a deadline attached to it, time to think, to create, to rest, to play, time to remember who they are outside of being an attorney.

Davina:

This doesn't mean they don't work hard, they do, but they work differently. Their hours are spent on the highest value activities, strategy, business development, client relationships, leadership. The grinding, exhausting, hour consuming work of processing every file and handling every client communication, that belongs to the team. Freedom of Presence. This is the one that makes women emotional when they describe it to me.

Davina:

The ability to be present, truly present, with the people in the moments that matter most to them, to watch their child's recital without half their mind on a client email, to sit at dinner with their partner and actually be there, not mentally composing a brief, to take a vacation, a real vacation, not a working vacation, where they're checking their phone every twenty minutes, and trust that the firm is in good hands. Presence is a luxury that the low 6 figure, do everything yourself model almost never allows. It is one of the most profound gifts that a well built, well staffed 7 figure firm gives back to its owner, freedom of choice. At 7 figures, you get to choose. You choose which clients you take and which ones you don't because you no longer need every single fee that walks in the door.

Davina:

You choose how your firm evolves, what practice areas to expand, where to invest. You choose where you live, how often you travel, what your workday actually looks like. You're no longer at the mercy of every opportunity that appears because you have the financial foundation to be selective. Choice is power, and seven figures puts that power in your hands. I wanna spend some time on something that doesn't get talked about enough in the business growth conversation, what scaling your firm to 7 figures does to your relationships.

Davina:

And I'm gonna start with your relationship with yourself. When you are chronically overworked, financially stressed, and carrying the weight of a business that runs entirely through you, it is very difficult to feel good about yourself in a deep and sustainable way. You might be proud of your accomplishments, and you should be. But underneath that pride, many women law firm owners carry a persistent exhaustion, a low grade resentment, and a nagging voice that asks, Why is this so hard? Why am I doing everything right and still feeling like I'm barely keeping my head above water?

Davina:

That voice gets quieter when your firm is financially healthy and structurally sound, when you have the resources to handle challenges without crisis mode stress, when you've built something sustainable that doesn't require you to sacrifice yourself to keep it running. The confidence that comes from genuinely thriving, not just surviving, is transformative. It changes how you carry yourself, how you communicate, how you lead, how you love the people in your life. Now let's talk about your closest relationships. I have heard from so many women in my community that the strain on their marriages, their partnerships, their family relationships in the years before they scaled was significant and real.

Davina:

The late nights, the missed events, the distraction and the worry that followed them home, the financial tension of months when revenue was unpredictable, the way the stress of the business seeped into everything. When the firm is running well, when revenue is strong and consistent, when you have a capable team, when you are not personally carrying every single thing, you come home differently. You are more present. You are less depleted. You have more to give.

Davina:

The relationships that have been quietly suffering under the weight of your overwork get the oxygen they need to breathe and grow again. And your relationship with your clients changes too When you are operating from abundance rather than scarcity, when you are not desperate for every fee, when you have the financial cushion to be selective, you attract and retain better clients. Clients who value your expertise, who respect your time, who pay their invoices without drama, and who refer others like them. The client experience at a well run, 7 figure firm is fundamentally different from the client experience at an overstretched solo practice. Your clients feel it, and it shows up in your referrals, your reviews, and your reputation.

Davina:

Here's something I want to address directly because I know it matters to the women listening to this podcast. The relationship between financial growth and impact. Some of you may have a quiet, unspoken belief that wanting to build a highly profitable law firm is somehow intention with being a lawyer who is motivated by service, by justice, by making a difference for your clients. That ambition and impact are somehow pulling in opposite directions. I want to dismantle that belief completely because it is not just false, it is the exact opposite of true.

Davina:

A 7 figure law firm serves more clients. Full stop. When your firm has the infrastructure, the team, and the financial resources to operate at scale, you can reach and serve more people than you ever could as a solo practitioner or a small firm grinding to make ends meet. The impact you have, the legal problems you solve, the families you protect, the businesses you help build, the justice you help deliver multiplies directly with your firm's growth. A 7 figure law firm creates jobs.

Davina:

The team you build, the associate attorneys, the paralegals, the administrative staff, the marketing professionals, the intake specialists, those are real people with real families whose livelihoods you are providing. That is impact. That is contribution. That matters. A 7 figure law firm elevates the entire profession.

Davina:

Every woman attorney who builds a wildly successful, profitable, well run law firm business is proof of what is possible. You are a role model, whether you intend to be or not. Every woman law student, every new attorney, every woman of color looking to see herself reflected in the upper echelons of the legal profession She is watching what you build. Your success gives her permission to dream bigger. And a 7 figure law firm allows you to give back in ways that low 6 figures simply doesn't make possible.

Davina:

Pro bono work, scholarships, community investment, charitable giving all of this expands with your financial capacity. Wealth is not the opposite of generosity. For the women I know who have built it intentionally, it is one of the most powerful vehicles for it. Your growth is not selfish. It is consequential in the best possible way.

Davina:

Now, I want to talk about what it actually takes to build the kind of law firm we've been describing today. And I want to be intentional here about the difference between what and how. The what, the things you need in order to get there, I can give you right now. The how, the specific strategies, the personalized roadmap, the step by step implementation plan designed around your specific firm, your practice area, your market, your goals, your life. That conversation requires a real human being who can hear your whole story and help you think through what the path forward actually looks like for you.

Davina:

And I'm going to tell you how to have that conversation at the end of today's episode. But the what, here it is. First, you need a wealth generating mindset. This is the foundation of everything. Before any tactic or strategy will work, you need to genuinely believe deep in your bones, not just intellectually, that a 7 figure law firm is possible for you.

Davina:

Not possible in theory, not possible for other women, but possible for you specifically with your background and your practice area and your market and your life circumstances. If you are carrying hidden beliefs that wealth is not for women like you, that wanting this much is greedy or unrealistic, that the ceiling you've been hitting is somehow inevitable, beliefs will undermine every strategy you try to implement. The mindset work is not soft or optional. It is the bedrock. Second, you need a clear and compelling vision.

Davina:

Not a goal, a vision. A goal is a number. A vision is a living, breathing picture of the firm and the life you are building. What does your firm look like when it is generating $1,000,000 a year or more? How many people are on your team?

Davina:

What kinds of matters are you handling? Where are your clients coming from? What does your typical week look like? What are you doing with the revenue you're generating? The vision is your North Star.

Davina:

Without it, you will make a thousand small decisions that feel reasonable in isolation, but collectively keep you circling the same altitude rather than climbing. Third, you need a strategy for attracting better clients. I want to emphasize the word better here because there is a critical distinction between more clients and better clients. More clients can mean more revenue, but it can also mean more work, stress, more of the wrong type of cases, and a firm that grows in volume but not in profitability or enjoyment. Better clients clients who are the right fit for your expertise, who value what you do, who pay promptly and without friction, who trust your counsel and treat your team with respect.

Davina:

Those clients are the foundation of a firm that is not just financially successful, but genuinely fulfilling to run. Fourth, you need a high performing team. I mean this in the most expansive sense of the term, not just good individual performers, but a team that is well led, well organized, well trained, and well cared for. A team where people understand the firm's vision and feel genuinely invested in it. A team where your culture is strong enough that it attracts and retains top talent because your firm is a genuinely excellent place to work.

Davina:

Building that team is one of the most important and most challenging things you will do as a firm owner, and it is absolutely fifth, you need systems documented, reliable, scalable processes that allow your firm to deliver consistent quality and consistent client experiences as it grows. Systems that mean your firm's performance doesn't depend on any single person, including you. Systems are what transform a practice into a business. They are what make it possible for your firm to serve 10 times the clients without requiring 10 times your personal time and energy. Mindset, vision, better clients, a high performing team, systems, these are the five pillars of the 7 figure law firm.

Davina:

And when they are all aligned and working together, 7 figures isn't the ceiling. It's the floor. I wanna do something a little different for this next segment. I wanna take you through a brief visualization exercise. I know that might sound a little out of the ordinary for a podcast about law firm business growth, but stay with me because I think this is going to land in a way that purely logical information doesn't.

Davina:

If you're driving right now, just listen. If you're somewhere you can close your eyes for a moment, I invite you to do that. I want you to imagine it's three years from now, your law firm consistently generates over $1,000,000 in annual revenue. You have a strong, capable team in place, lawyers and staff who are excellent at what they do and genuinely committed to the firm's vision. Picture a Monday morning, not a Sunday night dread Monday.

Davina:

A real Monday morning where you wake up and feel something close to excitement about the week ahead. You have a team meeting at ten not a crisis meeting. A leadership meeting where you get to hear from your team about what's working, what clients they're serving, what they need from you as their leader. Your role in that meeting is not to solve every problem. It's to set direction, offer perspective, and celebrate what's going well.

Davina:

That afternoon, you have two hours blocked for strategic work, thinking about where the firm is headed next year, reviewing the financial reports with real comprehension and confidence, having a call with a potential strategic partner. This is CEO work, And you are doing it from a place of clarity and energy because you are no longer depleted by doing everything else. At 04:00, you close your laptop, not because the work is done, the work is never entirely done, but because you have a team that is handling it, and your presence in the evening belongs to you and the people you love. This weekend, you are going somewhere. Maybe it's a quick trip with your family.

Davina:

Maybe it's a long girls weekend you've been putting off for three years. Maybe it's just two full days of being in your life, your real life, not the life that revolves entirely around the firm, without guilt and without a phone that won't stop buzzing. How does that feel? I'm asking because that feeling, whatever you just felt, is important information. If it felt like longing, that longing is data.

Davina:

It's telling you something about what you want and what you're working toward. If it felt impossibly far away, that distance is also data. It's telling you there might be some beliefs worth examining about whether this level of success is really available to you. Whatever you felt, I want you to hold onto it as we move into the final part of today's episode. Here's what I want to say to you before we get to today's call to action, and I mean this with my whole heart.

Davina:

You are closer to that vision than you think. I know it might not feel that way. The gap between where you are right now and a million dollar plus law firm might feel vast, even impossible, especially if you've been grinding for years and the needle hasn't moved the way you hoped, especially if you've tried things that didn't work, especially if the voice in your head keeps whispering that maybe this level of success is for other people, not for you. But here is what I know from working with hundreds of women law firm owners. The women who ultimately build 7 figure firms are not some special category of superhuman lawyers with extraordinary advantages.

Davina:

They are women just like you, smart, talented, committed, and running a practice that has real potential that has not yet been fully unlocked. The difference between where they were before and where they are now is not talent. It is not luck. It is not even hard work because most of them were already working incredibly hard. The difference is strategy.

Davina:

It is the right guidance at the right time. It is having someone in their corner who could see their firm's potential clearly and help them build a path to realize it. That is exactly what Wealthy Woman Lawyer exists to provide. And I want to be clear, getting to 7 figures does not always take as long as you fear. I have seen women make profound, firm changing breakthroughs in months, not because of magic, but because the right strategic shift made it the right moment with the right support can change the trajectory of a business very quickly.

Davina:

The potential was always there. It just needed the right conditions to emerge. You have already done the hardest thing. You built something. You have a firm.

Davina:

You have clients. You have legal expertise that is genuinely valuable. The foundation exists. What we do is help you build on it intentionally, strategically, and sustainably, so that the 7 figure life we've been talking about today is not a someday fantasy. It is a foreseeable, planable, achievable reality.

Davina:

So here's what I want you to do right now, and I mean right now, not when you get home, not when things slow down, not when the timing is better because the timing is never gonna feel perfect. And waiting for perfect is just another word for staying stuck. I want you to go to wealthywomanlawyer.com and book a call with my team. This is a real conversation, not a canned sales pitch, not a webinar replay dressed up as a consultation. It is a genuine one on one conversation where we get to understand your firm, where it is right now, where you want it to go, what's been getting in the way, and whether and how we can help you bridge that gap.

Davina:

You will leave the call with more clarity than you walked in with. I promise you that. I want to speak directly to a few of you right now. For the woman who has been thinking about this for a long time but hasn't taken the step yet, I understand. Change feels risky.

Davina:

Investing in your firm's growth feels risky, especially if you've tried things before that didn't deliver. But I want to offer you a reframe. The risk of staying where you are is also real. Every year of capped revenue, every year of burnout, every year of putting off the life you actually want, that has a cost too. It just doesn't send you an invoice.

Davina:

The call costs you nothing. The conversation is free. Take the step. For the woman who is doing okay right now and wondering if she really needs this, I would ask you to think about what okay is costing you. Okay is comfortable, but comfortable and fulfilling are different things.

Davina:

If there is a gap between the law firm you have and the law firm you imagine when you decided to build something of your own, that gap deserves your attention. And for the woman who felt something stir in her during today's visualization, who got a glimpse of what the seven figure life actually feels like and felt a pull toward it that she hasn't been able to shake. That pull is not accidental. That is your ambition, your vision, your future self trying to get your attention. Honor it.

Davina:

Book the call. You can find us at wealthywomanlawyer.com. The link is in the show notes. It takes about two minutes to get on the calendar, and it could genuinely be one of the most important conversations you have this year. You didn't go to law school, pass the bar, and build a firm from the ground up to make okay money and feel exhausted all the time.

Davina:

You built it to thrive. You built it to be wealthy. You built it to live the kind of life that makes all the hard work worth it. Let us help you get there. Go to wealthywomanlawyer.com and book your call today.

Davina:

We are coming up on the end of today's episode, and I want to close with something I say often but mean more deeply every time I say it. 7 figures is not just a number. It is a different life. A life with more choices, more security, more time, more presence, more generosity, more joy. A life where your firm serves you as much as you serve it.

Davina:

A life where the sacrifice you've already made, the years of hard work, the late nights, the risk of entrepreneurship finally pays off in full. That life is available to you. It is not reserved for attorneys with different backgrounds or better markets or lucky breaks. It is built intentionally, strategically, with the right support, and it is built by women just like you. Thank you so much for being here with me today.

Davina:

If this episode moved you, if it gave you a glimpse of what's possible or put words to something you've been feeling but haven't been able to articulate, please share it. Send it to a woman in your life who is running a law firm and hasn't yet given herself permission to want more. Leave us a review if the podcast has been valuable to you. Every review helps more women find us, and that is exactly the point. I'll be back next week with another conversation to help you build the law firm business and the life that you truly deserve.

Davina:

Until then, I am Devina Frederick. This has been the Wealthy Woman Lawyer podcast. Go build something extraordinary.
