What is Type B Knitting?

Type B Knitting is a weekly knitting podcast for the Type B crafter. Sisters Veronica and Gosia chat about WIPs, yarn, test knits and the knitting projects that don't go as planned, because knitting is a journey, not about the finished garment. New episodes every Tuesday.

Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Type B Knitting. I, well just kidding, let me explain what the podcast is first. This is a podcast of two sisters who love to yap about knitting. I am one of the sisters Veronica and I'm the other sister Gosia. And today Gosia came up with a really fun game for us, shout out for the idea. We are gonna play two truths and one lie, knitting edition. We're both gonna do one round and then I'll have a super special secret second round. So bonus, bonus round and it's gonna be even harder than the first one. No, I don't know. I actually don't know. I feel like I should give you a harder one last. Well they're both kinda hard. It's funny because we kinda know a lot about each other's knitting because we talk about knitting so much with each other. But I think it'll be really interesting to do this truth, truth, and a lie. I feel like we're gonna find out things that we didn't even know. I think that happened with other episodes where it's like oh I didn't even know you did that. Yeah, I feel like we're gonna be exposing ourselves in some of these. Let's start, shall we? Okay, I am ready. Okay, so I'm gonna go first. First round. Hold on, I do wanna see, I mean I feel like they're both equally as difficult so let's do this one. Alright, first round Veronica's knitting journey. Okay, number one. One of my sweaters is being held together by superglue slash hotglue. Number two, I've knit during a Zoom meeting with my camera on. And number three, I've memorized a cable chart. Oh my god, these are really good. I feel like I'm so screwed for both of your rounds because that's good. Okay, let me break down my thinking. The first one was a sweater that's held up by superglue and hotglue. Yeah, okay. My first thought was I feel like I would have heard about this and hotglue would be so horrible for fiber because it would just like be this big chunk. Like imagine doing your armholes where you like hotglue it. You just got this bead of hotglue scratching your arm. I feel it would not work well. So my thinking is that is a lie. But then I was worried because you said the fact that you're admitting this on a podcast was crazy. Well, I didn't say it was a work Zoom meeting, I just said Zoom meeting with my camera on. Oh, okay. Well, I just said I am knit during a Zoom meeting with my camera on. Okay, so with the second one, I feel like you did something tricky where it's like, oh, I did it on a Zoom, but like you're counting you and I on a Zoom as knitting. And we've done that. We've chatted. Yeah, I feel one is true because it's like a little like caveat thing.

Yeah. And then what was the last one? The last one is I've memorized a cable chart. I feel like you have I feel like you're really nifty. And you've done a lot of cable charts. So like even if you're I feel like I've even worked on like projects where like there's a chart. And like after like a good amount of time doing it, you kind of memorize the chart where you don't have to reference it as much. And you've done a lot of cables. So I feel like you've definitely memorized even if it's just with the like, in the process of making it, like enough to know that side. My answer is the first one, the hot glue is the lie. Do you think the hot glue is the lie?

Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. Obviously, like let's do the easiest one. Well, I mean, I guess you don't have a second guess because you already know what the other one is. Okay, so I've knit during a zoom meeting, I count as like our calls is also knitting on calls. And I've always like whenever we're recording these like 99 I'm not doing it today. But like 99% of the time I am knitting on something. So I've definitely done that. One of my sweaters is in fact being held by superglue slash hot glue. So the first ever sweater that I wore, which is actually the sweater that I wore to yarn con this year, is being held together by superglue slash hot glue, because that yarn is acrylic yarn. And I was cutting all of the like bubbles from that yarn with scissors at work one time. And I cut into the sleeve on accident. So I like quickly like when I got home, I like quickly like flipped it over. Because like there was no saving it like I completely cut like a chunk of yarn like out of the sleeve. Luckily, the sleeves are like super big and like baggy. So I literally just like came home and I like hot glued it slash like super glued it together. So now on the inside of that sweater, there's like one patch of like hot glue, just like in that like fiber and it like rubs up against my arm.

So literally my armpit story is real, basically. Yeah, that's honestly crazy. But I think in the panic of one of your works being literally chopped up and you having to do surgery, it makes sense. But to use hot glue is crazy. Yeah, you could have probably sewn it. I've done that with like that stinking hood that I made that you can go and you can sew it a bunch of times. So almost like mend it, but it was like bulky yarn. Oh, then yeah, you would have seen. Yeah. And like, I also didn't have any leftover of it. So like, I was kind of like, so well. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, one of my sweaters is and hey, it's one of the sweaters that I've actively wear and enjoy wearing. So I think that's crazier. That just sucks. Because it's one that you enjoy so much. And now it's ruined. But what's funny is that like, I fall in and out of love with it. Like, sometimes I'll be like, Oh, I really like don't like this one. I should probably get rid of it. And then other times I'm like, I wear it like all the time. So I feel like I just go through like cycles with it. Which one is this one again? Remind me. It's the one that I wore to Yarn Con. It's like, it literally looks like the cloud. Twee the Lang cloud yarn that you wore, but it's just like in a, like more neutral colorway. So it's like a brown, a yellow, a green, like a rust color. Yes. Okay. I remember now. Yes. What a shame. It's so cool. But at least you fixed it instead of you throwing out sweaters for less. That's true. I have donated and gotten rid of sweaters for much, much less. So it kind of shows you that like, I really care about that one. Yeah, even though you fall in and out of love with it, yeah, there's still something about it.

It was also one of my first sweaters. So I'm like, Oh, I kind of want to keep it, you know? Oh yeah, I'm definitely sentimental in that way. So I've had the first sweater I've ever had, the Alaska sweater, I've had it forever. I just needed to finish literally one sleeve and the neckline and the sleeve was like 70% done. But I like, I put it on and it was really tight. It felt like I was putting on a toddler sweater. It felt like I have to unravel it. Yeah. So I had to, yeah. So I finally unraveled it. I went, I've gone to that point. And it's like, nice, kind of bittersweet. But at least now I can like use that for something instead of it just sitting undone. I mean, you could just remake that sweater with that yarn in a bigger size.

Oh, no, not a fan of that idea. No, I'm moving on to bigger and better things. There's some trousers I need to make. Here's the thing. Is it really your first sweater if you never even finished it? Is it your first sweater if you hate everything about it? Yeah, like it's not your first sweater. You can't call that your first sweater because it's not. Like you didn't even finish it. Like your first sweater is the one that you actually completed. Like that's what I count as my first sweater. No, I count the first one that I've ever worked on. I've done a lot of learnings on it, but yeah, I do get that. That's so funny. Okay, are you ready for my truth and a lie? I feel this one might be either really easy or really hard for you. Okay. Okay. So I have, I have never knitted a blanket. My first set of knitting needles ever were bamboo straight needles. And my favorite yarn weight to knit is worsted.

And I can repeat. I feel like I definitely know your favorite weight is worsted because I feel like everyone's favorite weight is worsted because it's like, it's not super chunky. I know that you don't like working with chunky yarn because you said it hurts your hands and that's, you were having issues with the evergreen sweater because it was a bulky yarn and your fingers were hurting from like working with the needles. I feel like I'm trying to like think back. I don't think you, I don't think you've ever knitted a blanket. I feel like that one's true. And okay, when you say your first set of needles were like bamboo straight needles, do you mean like DPNs? No, like the ones that are the straight needles and have the like ends, the like stopped ends. I'm talking like first ever, like grandma's teaching us how to knit, like, and I'm borrowing her supplies. I would believe that. I don't think our grandma would be using circular needles. I think it's the second one. I think your first set of needles were bamboo straight needles. So which one is the lie? Oh, because it's two truths and a lie.

Oh, wait, hold on. Hold up. Hold up. I was looking, I was like, yep, that's true. Yep, that's true. Yep, that's true. Wait, yeah, done. I've never knitted a blanket. I've never knitted a blanket. My first set of knitting needles ever were bamboo straight needles. My favorite yarn weight to knit is worsted. Oh, okay. What the heck? You just convinced me of the second one. So I'm like, I've never knitted a blanket. Have you ever knitted a blanket? I feel like I would have heard about it because knitting a blanket is literally the worst thing ever. Well, I thought that about hot glue. I feel like you haven't knitted a blanket.

I you're gonna come out and tell me that you've knitted a blanket that like, it's like was never finished or you gave it to someone I feel like, or like you gave it to our parents or something. I don't know. Technically, I have knitted a blanket. I did the finger knitting for our parents. Do you remember? It was like literally a mess of just like loose yarn. It was if you took like, imagine you went to like a fisherman yard, where like, it's like dogs and you took that netting. Yeah, it was horrible. Um, well done. It was just not the right yarn because you picked like, maybe a bulky. No, I think it was legitimately worsted. It was like worsted yarn that I should have. It should have been like extra, extra, extra bulky yarn like that like Bernat like blanket yarn like it should have been that. Um, but instead I used like worsted weight. Okay, anyway, enough about me. Okay, I'm gonna say you've never knitted a blanket is a lie. What was the lie? I was a little sneaky.

The lie was that my first set of knitting needles ever were bamboo straight needles. Oh, they were metal. They were metal. They were metal. What the heck is your problem? That's horrible. It was horrible. I think it was grandma like taught me how to knit and it's just what she had or like what I bought from Michaels or something and then asked her to help me. So it's whatever Michaels had, it was metal. And I think they were purple. So they were pretty cool. But they were metal needles and to start out with metal needles and like straight needles, like it was not fun. I had one and I was making a scarf, but I didn't want it so skinny.

So I tried to pack as much as I could on the straight needles to make it like, you know, like a like a like a scar. Yeah, so I packed as much as I could. But because it was so packed, it would spring back. So a lot of the like, they would like follow on. Yeah. And I just remember stabbing those needles in the yarn ball and I just. Oh, that's so funny. That's horrible. I'm so sorry. Circular needles are the way to go. Now I have a lot more fun with knitting. Yeah. Oh my God. Yeah. Circular needles are literally the best. Like, how does anyone knit on anything else? I don't know. Okay, so bonus round. Second round for me.

Okay. Ready? Yes. Okay. Number one, I have finished all of the knitting kits I've ever bought. Okay. I already know that's a lie. I've bought. I want to emphasis. I've bought. Okay. Okay. Number two, I've dropped a stitch and simply hoped for the best. And then number three, I've knit from a hank and thought everything was going to be fine because I'm built different. Last two are the most type B answers ever. Yeah, I know. Oh my God. I love them so much. Okay. Okay. So let's finish all the kits that I bought. Okay. I mean, like the other two are just too true. They're just too funny. Oh, that'd be true. Okay. Well, it was, I dropped a stitch and hope for the best. That gives meronic advice. What was the last one? I've knit from a hank and thought everything was going to be fine because I'm built different. Those, those feel like such, like they feel so real. Yeah. Like they cannot be a lie. Like I feel like I've tried the hank thing before. Like prior to knowing you're supposed to wind it. I feel like that was my impression too, where it's just like, Oh, like this is just how I do it. It either comes in the ball, like a really nice cake or it comes as this. And I just, this is what it is. What it is. Um, I feel that there's some caveat with the, um, what's it called with the first one of like, Oh, I bought all of the ones I made or something. And it's like, no, but you've done the ones that somebody bought you. So my answer is that the first one, the one about the kids is the lie.

Yes, that is true. Good job. Um, yeah, I know. Um, I have gotten many kids as gifts and also I have bought many kids and I have not finished ones that have been gifted to me and ones that I've bought as well. So none of them got me. No, like I made a majority of the kits, but like I, um, there was a gift that I didn't finish and that I would, you know, it's the socks. Yeah. I couldn't even finish it. Yeah. I was like, Oh my gosh. And then, um, the kit that I bought that I didn't finish is I actually bought a kit to make a like raffia bag. Oh my God. Yeah. Yeah. And I got done with the body. And then I think something about making the strap just was not interesting to me. So I just completely like abandoned it and I never looked back and I'm pretty sure I just like, I'm pretty sure I gave you that yarn or we like donated it to that craft store. I yeah, I have a bunch of raffia. So I think you did give it to me. Is it Brown? Oh, yes, yes, yes. Yeah. That's so funny that it's like, I'm going to do this construction of the bag, but the daisy chain straps, absolutely not. No, ma'am. That's where I draw the line. I said, absolutely. I am not interested in doing any of that. Oh, I love that. That's very fun. I feel like we learned a little bit about each other.

Yeah. And but also knowing that nothing has changed. Yeah, this is like, I feel like in the beginning, like these are excusable for people who are just getting into the hobby. But I'm like, I would do all of this stuff now. Personally, I'm like, I have not changed a single bit. I've changed so much. And yet I've changed not at all. Yeah. I like I feel like my, my actual skill level has increased minimally. But like the way that I approach things is like zero. Like it's like the exact same from day one. Never forget your day one. Yeah. I also like when I was like thinking about this, I was like, Oh, I wonder if I've ever like, like read through a pattern before starting it. And I do. I'm thinking about that sweater that I read to you the one with like the stripe going down the side. Yes. And the first line of that pattern that I bought with my money fully intending to make it the first line I read. I'm like, I'm not doing this ever. I'm like, I'm literally never doing this. So I'm like, I was like, technically, I have read through a pattern because I read the first sentence. And I was like, No, but it's literally because I don't know where to start. So yeah, that's a fun one. Yeah. Alrighty. Well, thank you guys so much for listening.
