And here’s today’s news from National Health Executive on Friday the 12th of April 2024
Despite record demand, the latest data shows performance improvements in a number of key areas for NHS staff. The faster cancer diagnosis target being exceeded for the first time, more people waiting less than four hours in A&E, and ambulance response times improving across all categories are some of the highlights.
The NHS delivered 1.48 million treatments during February, which is 9% more than the same month in 2019. NHS England’s national medical director, Professor Sir Stephen Powis said “there is further to go and our ambitious recovery work continues, but it is clear the NHS is treating more patients more quickly”.
Feeling undervalued, a lack of progression opportunities, and disillusionment are some of the biggest reasons identified by doctors as to why they may leave, according to new research from the General Medical Council. A survey of doctors showed that 13% were very likely to move abroad to practise medicine in the next 12 months, with a further 17% saying they were fairly likely.
The GMC says that targeting the most discontented group of doctors and making general improvements to workplace conditions could have the biggest impact on retention. The GMC’s chief executive, Charlie Massey, said: “It’s much easier to dissuade someone from leaving by acting upon concerns, than to persuade them to return. There are no easy fixes, but these findings highlight the urgency with which we must act.”
