Rohan Kapoor: Welcome to Pivot Energy for Monday, May 11th, 2026. I'm Rohan Kapoor.

Amara Diallo: And I'm Amara Diallo. Today we're tracking a power market that looks very different than it did even six months ago. Data center load growth, nuclear restarts, and a grid straining to keep up.

Rohan Kapoor: Let's start with the headline number. PJM's latest capacity auction cleared at $329 per megawatt-day, just shy of the cap. That's roughly $14.7 billion in capacity costs flowing through to ratepayers starting June 1st. Two years ago that same auction cleared near $29.

Amara Diallo: A more than tenfold jump. The story behind that number is AI infrastructure colliding with a grid that wasn't built for it. PJM is now forecasting 32 gigawatts of new data center demand by 2030, and Virginia alone accounts for nearly half.

Rohan Kapoor: The economic implications are concrete. Maryland and New Jersey regulators are projecting residential bill increases between 15 and 22 percent this summer. That's politically untenable, and we're already seeing legislative pushback. Maryland's PSC opened a docket last week to examine whether data center load should be ring-fenced into a separate rate class.

Amara Diallo: Which is the question utilities everywhere are wrestling with. Who pays for the grid AI needs? Dominion, AEP, and Duke have all filed some version of a large-load tariff in the past quarter. Georgia Power's version, approved in April, requires hyperscalers to commit to 15-year minimum bills covering infrastructure costs.

Rohan Kapoor: And the hyperscalers are paying. Microsoft, Meta, and Google collectively disclosed over $48 billion in energy-related procurement contracts in their most recent 10-Qs. The interesting line item is direct generation. Meta's deal with Constellation for the Clinton nuclear plant is now structured as a 20-year PPA at a reported $85 per megawatt-hour.

Amara Diallo: Which brings us to nuclear, where momentum is real but timelines are still slipping. Holtec announced Friday that Palisades will not restart until Q1 2027, a third delay. The cost has now ballooned to $2.1 billion, up from the original $1.5 billion estimate.

Rohan Kapoor: And that's a restart, not a new build. Even at $2.1 billion for roughly 800 megawatts, you're looking at $2,600 per kilowatt of capacity, still attractive relative to anything greenfield. But the delivery risk is being underpriced in some of these PPA valuations.

Amara Diallo: On the new build side, the small modular reactor story took an interesting turn this week. X-energy and Amazon broke ground on site work for their Washington state project, targeting 320 megawatts by 2032. That's the first commercial SMR construction milestone in the US.

Rohan Kapoor: 2032 is the operative phrase. Six years out, assuming no delays, which historically is a heroic assumption for nuclear. Meanwhile the load is showing up now. The gap is being filled with gas.

Amara Diallo: Right. GE Vernova reported its turbine order book is sold out through 2029. CEO Scott Strazik told analysts last week they're seeing the strongest gas turbine demand since the early 2000s.

Rohan Kapoor: And those orders are translating to capex. Vernova's stock is up 38% year-to-date. Siemens Energy is up 51%. The market is pricing in a sustained gas buildout, with implications for emissions targets that investors are starting to discount.

Amara Diallo: Quick hits. On renewables, Q1 solar installations came in at 11.8 gigawatts according to SEIA, down 6% year-over-year. Tariff uncertainty around Southeast Asian panels is the main culprit.

Rohan Kapoor: Battery storage held up better. 4.2 gigawatts deployed in Q1, with Texas accounting for nearly half. ERCOT's battery fleet is now over 12 gigawatts and actively setting marginal prices during evening ramps.

Amara Diallo: That's a quiet revolution. Five years ago batteries were a rounding error. Now they're a price-setting resource in the largest competitive market in the country.

Rohan Kapoor: On policy, Treasury issued final guidance Friday on the 45V hydrogen credit. The three pillars are largely intact, which clean hydrogen developers wanted, but deliverability rules got slightly more flexible. Plug Power was up 12% on the news.

Amara Diallo: Though the green hydrogen project pipeline has shrunk considerably. BNEF tracked 47 cancellations or delays globally in the past 12 months. The credit helps, but the demand side still isn't there.

Rohan Kapoor: One more: FERC approved the Grain Belt Express transmission line on Thursday. 800 miles, 5,000 megawatts of capacity from Kansas wind to load centers in Illinois and Indiana. Construction starts next year, in service targeted for 2030.

Amara Diallo: A meaningful unlock. The Midwest has gigawatts of stranded wind that can't reach the data center build-out east of the Mississippi. Transmission has been the bottleneck for a decade.

Rohan Kapoor: Approval is one thing. Steel in the ground is another. The project has faced lawsuits in Missouri for over ten years.

Amara Diallo: Fair caveat. But the broader theme this week is that physical infrastructure is finally responding to the demand signal. Slowly, expensively, but moving.

Rohan Kapoor: Expensively is the operative word. Capacity prices, turbine prices, nuclear costs, transmission costs, all up. The question for business leaders is whether your energy strategy is priced for 2022 or the world we're actually in.

Amara Diallo: And whether you have contracts to lock in supply before competitors do. Hyperscalers figured this out 18 months ago. Industrial buyers are next.

Rohan Kapoor: We'll be watching the FERC technical conference on co-located load on Wednesday. That ruling could reshape how data centers connect to existing generation.

Amara Diallo: A potentially defining decision for the year. We'll cover it Thursday.
