Shalom and welcome to our daily podcast! Today, we'll be diving into the wisdom of Rambam, specifically his teachings on tzedakah, or charity, a subject that touches each of our lives.
Rambam, also known as Maimonides, famously outlined eight levels of giving charity, each one higher than the last. Of these, the highest level is to strengthen a fellow Jew by providing a gift, loan, or partnership, or by finding them employment - in effect, to make it unnecessary for them to depend on others.
But why is this the highest level? Because it embodies the teaching of "Vehechezakta bo" - "And you shall strengthen him". This means we should help others before they become impoverished, providing aid in a way that respects their dignity and allows them to become self-sufficient.
We can apply this teaching to our everyday life by seeking ways to empower others, to lift them up rather than just provide for their immediate needs. Whether it's through mentoring, providing job opportunities, or supporting local businesses, we all have the power to practice charity in a way that respects and enhances the dignity of our fellow man.
May we all strive to fulfill this highest level of charity, and by doing so, make the world a kinder, more compassionate place.
