The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

We start with Al Green and the so-called "Grits Incident," then it's all the new indie bidness you can smoosh with new tunes from girl in red, Barrie, Men I Trust, and many other worthies on a rather crazy Tuesday as the buskers have left town.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 18, 2022 with Al Green driving the ladies mad once again!  Tonight we start with the so-called "Grits Incident," when a woman dangerously obsessed with soul singer Al Green poured boiling grits over his head and then committed suicide in the next room with The Reverend's own gun.  This is one tale in a long and weird line of Al Green driving women so wild they actually ended up severely injuring the object of their affection.  Since it is Tuesday we have tons of new indie and underground music to get through with Kat Bass, as it has been a busy weekend of new tunes just out.  Highlights this week come from Men I Trust, ALASKALASKA, girl in red, Barrie, and many beyond just that.

Facts
Al Green – You Ought To Be With Me
- Yesterday in 1974, if you are an Al Green buff, you will know of the infamous “Grits Incident.” Now, this is just one in a line of women getting serious feels for The Reverend, and getting him seriously injured. In this instance…
- When a flight attendant friend of Green's shows up to meet the singer, he ends up at his Memphis home with her and his companion, Mary Woodson, who is dangerously obsessed with the singer. When Green goes into the bathroom to brush his teeth, Woodson bursts in and pours a pot of boiling grits on him, burning him badly before going in the next room and killing herself with his gun.
- Green takes these disturbing events as a sign from God and focuses his career on gospel music and preaching.
Blossom Club – Motive
- This is a duo from France who named themselves after flowers in Foxglove and Azalee.
- He is a multi-instrumentalist and producer from Nantes. She is a singer-songwriter from Casablanca, Morocco who grew up in Canberra, Australia. The duo was formed shortly after the two musicians’ first encounter at music school in late 2020 in Paris.
GLOSSER – Disco Girls
- This is another male-female duo in Riley Fanning and Corbin Sheehan, and the song with accompanying video celebrating youth are the lead singles to Fanning’s upcoming debut record Downer.
- No word when the album will drop, but we’ll keep an eye out on that.
John Moods – Such a Thrill
- November 11 sees the 3rd album from the artist drop in full, and this is one of the teaser lead singles. For those unfamiliar, John Moods is the solo music exploration of Jonathan Jarzyna from the band Fenster.
- That album by the way, is called The Great Design…I think I forgot to mention that earlier.
Human Barbie – empty
- Out last week and we are tipping our cap once again is Human Barbie’s latest EP no worries, out via Poor Man Records. True name Christopher Leopold, you can check out his full interview a week and a half ago on this very show, where we got to premiere this tune. Big up everyone involved here, top to bottom, that’s Human Barbie, the no worries EP.
Dress Warm – Take a Hint
- This is the instrumental section of a band from Austin, TX called Hall Johnson, and is only the 2nd career single release.
- The tune itself is a buoyant bit of somewhat country fried goodness, with the lyrics bopping along the merry path in similar fashion.

Part 2
girl in red - October Passed Me By
Zachary Knowles - SOMEWHERE IN TEXAS
Fazerdaze - Winter
Tomper - Cruise Control
Barrie - Unholy Appetite
Morabeza Tobacco - Teacher's In The Mood

Facts

girl in red - October Passed Me By 2.46
- girl in red—aka Norwegian singer-songwriter Marie Ulven—has returned with her first new single of the year.
- The new song, “October Passed Me By,” is the sequel to Ulven’s 2018 hit “We Fell in Love in October.”
- The artist explains, “‘October Passed Me By’ is where I’m at today, emotionally and musically. Grateful for what has been, and full of love for a very special person that made a huge impact on me as a person.”

Zachary Knowles - SOMEWHERE IN TEXAS 3.0
- Rising artist and indie pop creator Zachary Knowles has shared his incredibly personal EP, GOALIE
- Sonically rough and rugged around the edges, the seven-track offering is an honest exploration of Knowles’ struggle with himself.
- In this experimental offering, the artist fearlessly faces the reality that he has been acting as his own “goalie” when it comes to blocking out emotions and shying away from opportunities that nourish personal growth.
- I can never feel so attacked as this realization

Fazerdaze - Winter 3.17
- Today, Amelia Murray has returned with Break!, the first new release from her Fazerdaze project in five years.
- The five-song EP was created over a three-month period spent in lockdown, making it a collection of songs underlining Murray’s own personal growth.
- The artist explains, “Because I was so private about the pain I was experiencing I called the EP Break! to reflect the way that I got myself out of the pain; by breaking, shouting for help, drawing a line and telling people around me that I’d had enough,”

Tomper - Cruise Control 2.51
- Ah, once Again I have struggled searching who Tomper is. No, not the clothes rompers, the Band tomper. With a little help from social media, I found that
- Tomper is an "adult contemporary pop" duo from Salt Lake City, Utah.
- Our pick Cruise Control is their debut single!
- A fresh new band with a clean slate, I am looking forward to listening to what they will bring to the table.

Barrie - Unholy Appetite 3.07
- Back in March, Barrie — the indie-pop project by Barrie Lindsay — released their sophomore album, Barbara.
- Today, they’re back with two new singles, “Nocturne Interlude” and “Unholy Appetite.” The former, a sleepy lullaby-esque track, was first featured as the end credits song for an episode of the NBC show Good Girls last year. The latter is more of your typical Barrie joint, boasting a chorus with a swirling, alluring melody.
- Also, good news, Barrie is on the road opening for Alex G and Japanese Breakfast. From 10/12 to the 27th, they are touring in many random places, check it out when I can!

Morabeza Tobacco - Teacher's In The Mood 4.04
- Lo-fi pop duo Morabeza Tobacco is sharing a brand new single “Teacher’s In The Mood”. It’s the final single before their new album “Shadow Of The Cherry” arrives November 4th of this year. The new song follows the Stockholm-based duo’s previous singles “Touch You”, “Temperature” and “MTV Horses”.
- Now reading the title, I'm not sure if it's just me, but it seems something beyond what a Teachers pet can do
- Thankfully the song itself isn't as worrisome and is just a delightful groovy and smooth lo-fi tune.

Part 3
Men I Trust - Girl
Indigo Sparke - Golden Ribbons
Say Sue Me - A.M. 180
Elephant Motel - Time Fly By
Tahiti 80 - Cameo
SALES - July

Facts

Men I Trust - Girl 3.31
- Last month Men I Trust released a brand new single with “Billie Toppy”. Now, the trio are giving us another new song with “Girl”, and it's the Montreal-based band’s third release this year.
- With Billie Toppy being quite upbeat And different, the band continues and once again switches things up. Girl is a slow-burning duet filled with melancholia and vocals in English and French.
- Men I Trust keeps on delivering fantastic music and I am hoping that these new songs are possibly from an upcoming album.

Indigo Sparke - Golden Ribbons 3.38
- Indigo Sparke’s majestic second full-length album Hysteria is a sweeping work, one that possesses a reflective power.
- In it, she examines love, loss, her history, and the emotional upheaval surrounding those sensations. It’s a diary built for big stages.
- Hysteria arrives just a year after her minimalist debut, Echo. Here, though, Sparke offers a complex collection that expands her sound and outlook.
- My personal pick Golden Ribbons is the 8th track of the album. If you like what you heard, go check her out.

Say Sue Me - A.M. 180 4.52
- South Korean dream pop quartet Say Sue Me have released a cover EP, 10, in celebration of their 10th anniversary as a band.
- It features covers of tracks by Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Daniel Johnston, Silver Jews, Grandaddy and Guided By Voices, along with two re-recorded versions of their own songs.
- Today's pick is the Busan Band's cover of Grandaddy's Am.180. Interestingly, it's a bit longer than the actual tune. Around almost 2 min.
-
Elephant Motel - Time Fly By 2.55
- Another fresh new band!
- two man band Elephant Motel is putting indie retro chill in full effect. Swimming with lazy rhythms, wavy guitars and vibey synths, their music makes you think of tube socks, cassette tapes and fresh soda pop by the community pool.
- Time Fly By is their 3rd track off their debut EP Feeling Alright.
- I say, the chill vibes are real contagious, so please listen wisely.

Tahiti 80 - Cameo 2.54
- For those unaware, Tahiti 80’s adventure began in the French cities of Rouen and Paris in the mid ‘90s. Taking their name from a souvenir T-shirt , Tahiti 80 has now released 9 acclaimed albums.
- Today's pick, Cameo is the 9th track of Their latest Here With You.
- A nice upbeat funky track, it is a definitely neat tune to drive, especially during these chillin' times.

SALES - July 3.14
- American guitar-based indie pop band SALES have released their second single of the year, July.
- Despite it being October, July is a sweet mellow simple tune, describing the feelings someone could feel from a crush in the middle of summer… July.
- I feel SALES really portrays the romantic feel of loneliness to a new level. A level high enough you want to be a part of, or possibly live in.
- Just as their hit songs, Pope is a Rockstar, Renee, and Chinese New Year, this is another definite banger.
Part 4
Sunbeam Sound Machine - Two Summers
Layten Kramer - Employment
Clear Coast - All I Ever Was
Jean Dawson - PIRATE RADIO*
ALASKALASKA - Glass
ALASKALASKA – Still Life

Facts

Sunbeam Sound Machine - Two Summers 3.24
- Nick Sowersby, known professionally as Sunbeam Sound Machine is an Australian multi-instrumentalist musician, now back after 3 years with their newest album, Possum.
- The album is said to be (quote)"an album that marks a new phase of creativity: a phase marked by vibrancy and a desire to embrace new attitudes regarding his approach to music.”
- The artist claims they wanted to have a more positive approach to their sound; more upbeat and eclectic, an album that goes to different places.

Layten Kramer - Employment 3.27
- Canadian musician Layten Kramer draws inspiration from the mundane routines we often find ourselves in.
- Based in Canmore, his love for psychedelic arrangements lead him to compose a new single, Employment
- With uplifting synths and ironic lyrics, in between indie and kaleidoscopic rock,
- The artist explains, You’ll feel like life is an absurd idea, so why not just get lost in an ocean of mellow reverberated sounds and enjoy that feeling.

Clear Coast - All I Ever Was 2.53
- From Munich, Germany four piece band Clear Coast has shared their newest single, All I Ever Was.
- Looking into the band's discography, the band has been active since 2020, with a total of 5 singles and one EP.
- Listening to the band, it seems a bit outrageous they don't have more released, but nevertheless, I shall wait.
- However it does seem they are planning to release a new EP soon, I hope a possible album?

GLOSSER - Disco Girls 3.22
- based in Washington D.C., Riley Fanning and Corbin Sheehan are A fresh new sound called, GLOSSER. The band looks to dreampop for inspiration but brings new shades and dimensions to the genre, especially with their new single Disco Girls
- Disco Girls references the music of acts like Phantogram and Beach House in its hazy, summer-y warmth.
- Fanning says “Disco Girls is about being young, and how that time is both terrible and great.” bandmate Sheehan adds, “The track was the start of something new for us, and Riley’s lyrics and story made it really easy to piece the song together and create a new vibe.”

Jean Dawson - PIRATE RADIO* 3.10
- Mexican - American experimental alt-star Jean Dawson has released their newest sophomore album, CHAOS NOW.
- Consisting of 13 tracks, CHAOS NOW* has shown an artist refusing to be pinned down to genre, instead following his muse where it leads. The end result is a deeply introspective collection that finds him wrestling with himself and coming out victorious.
- Pirate radio is the last track off the album, it is a really oddly beautiful track, accompanied with an interesting, and quite fun music video… I highly recommend for you to watch it.

ALASKALASKA - Glass 3.33
ALASKALASKA - Still Life
- I have to say, it's my first time listening to ALASKALASKA, and I definitely felt indie can really spread to various types of music.
- Mainly working in electronica, Alaskalaska attempts to create musical escapism, whisking the listener away from the mundane towards something magical.
- Quoting other listeners, The album performs a low-key alien abduction, taking the listener onboard a twisted journey through the vast corners of the universe.
- Our pick Glass is the 8th track on this mystical journey.
