OK Solberg:

I wanna again welcome you to The 405 Coffee Break. Guys, I say that every time. Get your cup of coffee, glass iced tea, bottle of water. Let's see what's happening.

OK Solberg:

Spring wheat $5.59 a bushel. 550lb steer calf, can lock them in at $5.60 if they're shiny. And a 100lb fat lamb in Billings $3.40 on the top end. But guys, there's more, much more.

OK Solberg:

Okay. Today, we flash back to the year 1965, and we'll do some Phillips County news searching. 1965. Did you realize there were 2 fatal small airplane crashes reported in the PCN within a six week period of time? It's true. Two. And both of them reported in the Phillips County newspaper.

OK Solberg:

The 1st one flew out of Havre on 03/28/1965. And as of printing of the PCN had not been found yet on April 1. But I did the research and found that that very day was the day it was reported 3 Glasgow residents were killed in that crash when their plane struck the Bear Paw Mountains south of Havre.

OK Solberg:

The 2nd one is probably the one you remember if you remember anything. It was found on Paul Cropp's property North of Malta, and it was spotted by Sylvan Nylander as the county was doing an air search.

OK Solberg:

And, again, 3 residents at Glasgow. Wow. What a hardship for everyone, but especially Glasgow. Two planes crash within 6 weeks of time. In the May 20 edition of the PCN from 1965, I see other tragic news.

OK Solberg:

On Sunday, May 16, there was a car crash up there in Hillcrest. Well, the Malta law enforcement was heading up to attend to that crash, and the law enforcement car hit a car at the corner of 9th Street And Central. 9th And Central, right across from where Packies was. I myself was 8 years old, and guess where I was? It was a Sunday.

OK Solberg:

Any guesses? I was in church at Elim, and the law enforcement crash happened during the morning worship service. One of the very few times, guys, a sermon got interrupted and the whole congregation goes out the door to see what the ruckus is. And as a 8 year old boy, I remember they carried one of the drivers into doctor Norbaum's office right next to the church. Wow.

OK Solberg:

1965 was an accident happening time in history. But like Paul Harvey used to say, wash your ears out with this. In the May 27 edition in 1965, I see Mrs. Harriet Lafond on the front page. There she is. She was gonna be my school teacher in 3 more years when I entered 6th grade in the fall of 1968, but I didn't know it at that time.

OK Solberg:

The article reads, grade school teacher fetted. Harriet Lafond, who has taught the 4th grade in the Malta Elementary School for the past 17 years, was honored at a party given by faculty members at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Raymond last Saturday evening. In addition to her 17 years in the Malta School, Mrs. LaFond taught 9 years in rural schools.

OK Solberg:

At the party for her, superintendent Paul Stengel spoke highly of her experience and ability as a teacher. A gift was presented from her fellow teachers, and the evening was spent socializing. Mrs. Edna Hoines, Mrs. Myrtle Hulte, Mrs. Lila Raymond, and Janet Higgins were in charge of the recognition party.

OK Solberg:

So that is of interest, especially since I had Mrs. Raymond as my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Hulte as my 5th grade teacher, and Mrs. LaFond in 6th grade, and then Miss Higgins when I got into typing in high school. Guys, did you know Miss Higgins embarrassed me highly in typing class?

OK Solberg:

You guys remember the old typewriters. You know, you roll the paper in, roll the paper in, get it set squarely, and then you need to drop that paper holder downer thing that had rollers and secured the paper. Well, I got my paper rolled in, but I forgot to put that thing down.

OK Solberg:

And I started typing and clack, clack, clack. It could be heard throughout the room because with the paper not secure and next to the roller, well, it made a lot more noise than usual. Honest. I didn't do it on purpose, and I was just going to fix it when Miss Higgins hollers out, no. No. No. Don't pay any attention to him. He's just trying to show off. You want someone to remember something? Embarrass them in front of their entire peer group.

OK Solberg:

Which reminds me in Matthew 6:15 it says, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:15

OK Solberg:

Oh, yeah. I forgive you, Miss Higgins. I truly do. Rest in peace. But I won't forget it because it's still a pretty funny story.

OK Solberg:

So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
