Winterfest: Messages for the Generations

Manouchka Charles challenges Northeast Winterfest 2026 to lean into God’s presence with expectation and to carry what happens in the room back into everyday life. She shares her own Winterfest story and reminds the room that encounter moments matter, but what you do after the encounter matters just as much.

Walking through Acts 9 and Saul’s encounter with Jesus, she explains how salvation can happen in a moment, but transformation is proven over time. The call is to move past emotional highs and step into real evidence, where new habits replace old cycles and a life with Jesus shows up in character, choices, and consistency.

She closes with practical steps to solidify what God is doing: repent with honesty, walk in accountability, witness by sharing your story, and commit to growth through scripture, prayer, and discipline. The challenge is clear. Do not leave with only a memory. Leave with fruit. Leave with evidence.

>> I know you started worship

If God did anything for you last night, would you just thank him?

Come on, if he's already moving in your heart this morning, would you thank him?

The Bible says enter into his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.

So can we make this atmosphere conducive for miracles, signs, and wonders?

Come on, would you open up your mouth for a few more seconds?

Would you push in his presence?

Come on.

All over this room, just believe that God is getting ready

to speak to you, you to drive all the way to Buffalo,

New York, not to get a word from the Lord.

And so would you just pull on Him and say, God speak.

I don't wanna leave here the same way that I came.

I came in here broken and I expect to leave restored.

I came in here sick and I expect to leave healed.

Come on, anybody got an expectation in the room?

Come on, raise up your expectation.

Raise up your expectation.

Raise up your expectation.

Come on, stir up the atmosphere.

I believe that we have a generation

that could stir up an atmosphere of faith.

Do you know that your praise is power?

that when you open up your mouth it is not just emotionalism, it's not just words that

don't mean anything but the very sound of your voice shakes heaven and earth.

I was in worship last night and think Jonathan led us so beautifully in a time of worship

and this worship this morning was so beautiful but I could feel the room shaking.

I can feel the room shaking as you worship.

I can feel it physically, but something tells me

that it was also happening spiritually,

that God is shaking up something in you,

that he's shaking something in you.

He's shaking something in your city.

He's getting ready to shake up something in your school.

And do you know that it starts with you?

It starts with you.

Turn to your neighbor and say, "It starts with you.

It starts with you. It starts with you."

that depending on how you praise today,

depending on how you respond today matters.

It matters so greatly.

I believe the presence of the Lord is in this room.

He's in this space.

And I want us to be aware of it.

I want us to be aware of it.

I want us to be conscious of it.

The one we get to be a part of is great.

So thankful for the incredible leaders that put this on.

Aren't you thankful for the pastors and the leaders?

Bishop Brian, Pastor Joel, Bishop Maxx,

all the people who put this on together.

Are you thankful for your youth leaders?

Could you make some noise for them?

(audience cheering)

Could you for like 10 seconds make it uncomfortably loud

to tell your youth leaders how much you love them?

If you're around them, shake them, give them a hug.

Some of them took off work to be here.

I am a product of youth ministry.

I'm a product of what God has done even in this space.

And so I know how much this matters.

It matters greatly that you're here.

It matters greatly that you are in this space.

Today feels a little bit like a time machine for me.

And oftentimes we ask ourselves,

What would I say to my 15-year-old self?

That's what people do when they get older, right?

And today I feel like I have the opportunity

to speak to my 15, 16, 17, 18-year-old self.

Because about 20 or 21 years ago, I'm about to date myself,

I walked into my first Northeast Winterfest.

I was so excited.

I was selling chocolates in my high school

to make money to get here.

And I had heard about all the incredible things

that God was doing at Winterfest

and I could not wait to finally get in the room.

And now 20 years later,

I know that what God did in this room

kept me, what God did in this room, shaped me.

And so I know the same for you today.

So wherever you are in the room, I want to let you know that today matters.

This weekend matters.

How you lean in matters.

Like I remember preparing for Winterfest, I had to have the flyest fit.

all my mind I was like I gotta get the right outfit I gotta do all the things

and I was so concerned about all the external things I was like I can't wait

to be away from my parents for a weekend. My mom's here she's like what?

And there was all these external reasons why I was excited to be in the room but

God met me in a way that it didn't matter what I was wearing it didn't

who was next to me. None of that mattered and so I want to make sure that we throw

off every bit of distraction whatever it is that we thought this was gonna be if

we came in here because somebody dragged us here we came in here just so we can

see our friends or or have a good time I want to let you know that it's more than

that. It's more than having a good time it's more than having fun you get to do

all of that what I love about God is you can have fun in church. Church should not

be boring. And so I believe we're gonna hear from God and we're gonna encounter

him in a special way but the moments in this room are going to matter. And so I

think the hardest thing in these times is like trying to get y'all to transition

back to your seats. But honestly you could sit here if you want, you could

find your seat, whatever you want to do but I'm gonna have you figure out what

you want to do but you can hang here, you could go back to your seats. But we're

We're gonna open up God's word.

I bring you greetings from Miami, Florida.

I am born and raised,

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York,

but I live in Miami now,

and so if you ever get tired of the Northeast in the winter,

you could just come on down to Miami.

It is much warmer there, but God's doing amazing things.

I've been a part of a church called VU

for the past 10, 11 years,

and I have just watched how God has moved greatly

in the time that I have been in Miami.

And it is truly an honor to be here

and an honor to bring God's word.

what I have realized about moments like this and spaces like this is that you really don't age out.

I know there's a time where it's just like, am I too old to go to Winterfest or should I be in the room?

We don't age out of the presence of God.

And I think it's important for you to understand that here and now because I think as young people

It's really exciting to come up to the altars and to be at the mosh pit and to be in the front and to worship.

But then somewhere along the line in our adulthood, we start to mature a little bit.

That we start to age out of the level of desperation that we once had in the presence of God.

And so I want to encourage you, don't age out of this thing.

You're not too cool to need Jesus. You're not too grown for his presence.

So I want to let you know that it is important for you to keep your childlike faith and your childlike wonder.

Matthew 18 and 3 tells us, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children,

you will never enter the kingdom of God." So I want to let you know that you are in the best position,

in the best place, because there is still this childlike wonder about you that everything that

that God does is big and every moment is magnificent.

And I wanna let you know to hold on to that.

But I also wanna speak to the leaders

and the pastors in the room.

Don't let go of your childlike wonder.

Don't come in a place like this

and sit in the back and be like, yo, that's for them.

It's not for me, this is for them.

No, no, this is for you too.

You don't age out of this either.

I believe it's important for us to even be an example

of a generation of how to be radical in worship.

I wanna out worship my youth leaders.

I wanna out worship my youth.

I wanna make sure that I am being the example of worship.

And so in this place, don't just spectate, participate.

Do not just spectate this moment,

participate in this moment.

decide I'm going to be leaned into every message.

There is no message preached just for the teenager

or no message preached that's just for the child.

I wanna speak to every single person in this room.

You're not aging out.

Hold on to your first love.

Hold on to what you first found

when you first came to the altar,

when you first had that level of desperation

You did not want to leave his presence. Could you tap back into the wonder?

Could you tap back into the wonder of God?

That I want to come before the Lord like a child

I love it humble. God, I just want to sit at your feet

That God if I could just sit at your feet that I'm not too busy

I'm not too preoccupied

God, I just want to sit at your feet.

I believe that God is raising up a generation that would be unashamed, that I'm not worried

about what people have to say about me.

I'm actually not worried about what the crowd is saying about me, that I've come to hear

from one.

Come on, God's going to bless you.

He's going to use you greatly.

And so this morning, if we could just fix our focus on Him, this is not the time to

be scrolling.

This is not the time for TikTok or Instagram.

This is a time for us to lean into the presence of God.

So I want to challenge you this morning to put away the distraction.

Some of y'all might be a little tired.

Who didn't get much sleep last night?

Who stayed up all night?

There it is.

I know how it goes.

And I know y'all weren't staying up last night praying either.

That's the thing.

It's not a watch night service.

But these moments are special.

I think it matters that you stay up all night

at youth conferences and spend time with your friends.

All of it matters.

These are memories that you are never going to forget.

But here you might be a little tired,

shake it off,

and lean into what God wants to do.

I was 15 years old when I went to my first Winter Fest

and my youth group was always late.

And so we always sat in the very back.

But I remember sitting in the back

and encountering the presence of God

because distance has no barrier.

That his presence, there is no barrier.

The distance is not going to take you away

from what God wants to do.

But I remember that first night of Winterfest,

the songs that they sang,

They did this skit called the Life House skit.

And even in moments of dramatization and videos

and dancing, God's presence was in all of it.

Remember the altar call?

Walking from way in the back to all the way in the front.

Before I even got to the front,

Somebody stopped me and said, "God's got a call on your life."

Didn't know what she was talking about,

but I made my way to the front.

And I experienced the Holy Spirit goosebumps.

Y'all know what that is?

That feeling,

the fire of God,

received the gift of tongues right here at a winter fest.

And it marked my life forever.

encounter moments matter.

But when you get back on the bus,

when you get back to school,

you have to decide, am I going to live this thing out

for real or am I gonna go back to the same cycles?

And so this is what I wanna talk to you about today.

What do you do next?

What do you do after the encounter?

What do you do after the moments at the altar?

How can I take these incredible moments

in the presence of God and bring it to my everyday life?

And to explore this, I want to look at Acts 9,

verses one to six.

This is the story of Saul's conversion.

It says, meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out

murderous threats against the Lord's disciples.

He went to the high priest and he asked him

for letters to the synagogue in Damascus

so that if he found any there who belonged to the way,

whether men or women,

that he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

As he neared Damascus on his journey suddenly,

somebody say suddenly,

you can say it a little louder than that, say suddenly.

- Suddenly.

- A light from heaven flashed around him.

He fell to the ground and he heard a voice say to him,

Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?

Who are you Lord?

Saul asked.

I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.

He replied.

Now get up and go into the city and you will be told what you must do.

A little spoiler alert for Saul.

He has this encounter and it changes him forever.

He's later known in the text as Paul,

and we see throughout the scriptures,

Paul becomes one of the most prolific voices

in the New Testament.

He wrote 13 out of the 27 books in the New Testament.

It is through Paul that we learn about grace.

It is through Paul that we learn about sanctification,

identity, spiritual gifts.

He is teaching the body of Christ doctrine.

Through his one encounter with Jesus,

it completely changes and transforms

what we know about the gospel.

And so today I want to preach to you from this title,

the evidence of an encounter,

the evidence of an encounter.

I grew up in church and so I've had

a lot of encounter moments.

I was the kind of person that got saved every weekend

because I didn't know if it stuck.

So I was like, let me just raise my hand just in case.

I had a friend of mine tell me that he kind of had

the same experience that he would always get down

to the altar and he would always go for prayer for salvation.

And one day his pastor was like,

you could no longer come down here for salvation.

You can come down for healing.

You can come for a breakthrough,

but you are no longer allowed to come down

for a salvation prayer.

And we can maybe relate to it because there's oftentimes

where we think that we need to raise our hand again

for salvation.

But what I had to learn is that I did not need salvation,

I actually needed sanctification.

Every time I messed up, every time I made a mistake,

I thought I needed to get saved again,

but it was not what I needed, I needed to get sanctified.

I needed repentance.

But repentance requires you to actually change

something about you.

And so I encountered the presence of God.

I had these incredible moments in the presence of God, but then I would go back to school.

I would go back to my day-to-day life and it would be as if I spent no time with God

at all.

And that did not negate my salvation.

So a lot of you in this room, maybe you have made a decision to follow Jesus and if you

have, you are saved, you have received salvation, but I wonder if you have been transformed.

Because salvation happens in a moment, but transformation happens over time.

See momentary encounters must be sustained by voluntary commitment.

What will I commit to after the encounter?

What am I going to commit to do after Winterfest is over?

What am I going to experience when this is all said and done?

I loved the youth conferences.

I loved the worship nights.

I loved all of it, but I would have those moments and somehow still go back to being

the same person that I was.

And what I've realized is that we could be around good church.

I grew up in a great church.

My church, they're in the room, Rempson Avenue Church of God.

Come on, make some noise.

They're not, oh, y'all not in the back no more.

Y'all in the middle.

You want the generation to get better, thank God.

But we had great worship.

And we would hear great songs and we would have these great moments, but you could be

in the room.

You could hear all the sermons and still leave the same.

And so I believe that my assignment is to move us past encounters and move us past just

moments and take us to a place where we make a decision to be committed.

matter. The altar matters. I'm not negating any of that, but what will you do when all

of this is said and done? I don't just want the encounter, I want evidence. Because without

transformation your salvation is like going to the gym but not working out. It's like

going to Disney World but not going on any of the rides. Having a Bible but never opening

it up, that you can have access to transformation but not actually be transformed.

See, salvation is the act of God partnering with us, giving us salvation, adopting us

into his family, declaring us righteous, and moving us from death to life.

transformation is an ongoing work of the Holy Spirit.

See, when you were transformed, your mind is renewed.

You're being shaped into being like Christ.

You are growing in holiness. You are changing in character.

You are developing new habits. If we're not careful,

we will take our old habits into new seasons.

I'm a creature of habit and I like to do a lot of the same things.

And if I like a shoe, I'll probably buy it twice.

This weekend I've only eaten at one restaurant.

I kind of do a lot of the same things.

I like the same things.

And that works in some parts of my life, but oftentimes we can get stuck in a pattern and

we can get stuck in a way and God tries to move us into something different, but we try

to drag the old thing in a new season.

Had this experience where I was talking to a friend.

We were at Chipotle together and I feel like the older I get, I turn into like a historian.

I always want to tell people where things started.

Like I got to Buffalo and I was telling my friend, I was like,

"Do you know that the first Buffalo wing started in Buffalo, New York?"

They have all these random facts, right?

And so I was talking to my friend about Chipotle and when Chipotle first opened up,

I was like, "Back in my day, there was one Chipotle."

And it was the best thing ever.

When Chipotle first opened up, I was a broke college kid in New York City.

In the first week of Chipotle opening, they gave us all food for free.

And it was a trick because they was getting us addicted to Chipotle.

And then a week later, they put up the prices.

I would walk into Chipotle and Chipotle would be like, "You don't got Chipotle money.

You got to get out of here."

But I developed a hack because I couldn't really afford Chipotle, so I developed a hack of

how to order Chipotle.

So I'd go into Chipotle, I'd order two tacos, I'd tell them to fill it up with rice, I'd

I told him to fill it up with chicken.

I put all the fixings in it.

I was like sour cream, corn cheese, all the things.

Give me a tortilla on the side and a vinaigrette.

And I would take the two tortillas

and I would dump them out

and I would have a bowl for less than it would cost.

So I was telling my friend this and we're at Chipotle

and he's like, "Manishka, are you still living

in New York City?"

I was like, "No."

He's like, "Are you still a broke college kid?"

I was like, "Thank God I'm not."

He's like, "So why do you still order Chipotle

"the way that you used to 10 years ago?"

And I know he wasn't talking about my life,

but something clicked.

Because there's certain things that we do in life

that we do because we're so used to doing it.

We're so used to doing it.

The things that you used to do,

you used to do it out of necessity,

you used to do it out of desperation.

And what we'll often do is we'll take the thing

that we used to do out of desperation

and bring it into a new season.

But I come to tell somebody you're not in that season anymore,

that you do not have to live

with that same level of desperation,

that you could actually live new

because God says that if you are in Christ,

you are a new creation,

that all things are passed away.

Behold, I have come and made you new.

And so we have to actually live in the new.

So what old habits are you taking into a new season?

Oh yeah, I used to smoke that because that was the only way that I could calm down.

But you know Jesus now, so you don't need it.

I wish I was talking to somebody.

I thought I was at Winterfest 2026, but if we're going to be in here and pretend like

we've never done anything and we've never been through anything, I think we would be

lying to ourselves.

What in your life have you been doing that God has rescued you from?

That if God has changed you and transformed you, why are you doing the same things?

Why are you watching the things that you used to watch before you were saved?

Why are you speaking the way that you used to speak before you met Jesus?

Has anything changed about you since you have met Christ?

And so you have to actually analyze your life.

Am I living in a new season with old habits?

Am I living in a new season with old habits?

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of going cycle after cycle,

pattern after pattern, unhealthy thinking after unhealthy thinking.

I actually want evidence.

I want evidence in my speech.

I want to see evidence in my relationship and evidence in my decisions.

Anybody looking for evidence for their encounter.

Anybody actually want to leave change out of winter,

that's 2026. I don't need everybody. I just need somebody.

just got y'all up here that will say that I actually want to leave changed.

Do you want to continue being the same person or do you want to be the best

version of you? Do you know that God sees the version of you that's healed and God

sees the version of you that's preaching the gospel? God sees the version of you

that is making money that will invest in the kingdom? God sees the version of you

that your mind is whole. God sees a version of you that you have not even met yet, but you have got to want to see that version of you.

You have got to desire to see a better version of yourself.

And so I don't want to just settle for an encounter this weekend.

I don't want to just settle for just small moments and small doses in the presence of God.

I don't want to just settle for small hits that get me high for a little bit, and then I go back to being the same.

I actually want to encounter the presence of God. I want to walk through my schools and people know that something's different about me

I want to step it back into school on Tuesday and people like what changed about you. What is different about you?

There's something on you and you can let them know that I've encountered the presence of God

Anybody in the room when a leaf different anybody in the room when a leaf change

Is there anybody in the room tired of being complacent?

Is there anybody in the room that will say,

"God, if you can use anything, you can use me.

You can use me for my generation.

You can use me for my family.

You can use me in my friends.

God, I'll do whatever it takes to be different,

but I've got to be what you've called me to be."

I want evidence.

Imagine if people could see something different about you.

Do you want evidence?

Do you want fruit?

If you want fruit, you've got to be willing to show seeds.

All of us want fruit.

All of us want to be fruitful.

But do you know what it takes to get fruit?

You have to plant a seed.

that I've got to plant seeds of worship.

I've got to plant seeds of gratitude.

I've got to plant seeds of prayer.

I have to plant seeds.

I believe that Winterfest 2026 is a moment

where you can plant a seed.

Are you gonna plant anything?

I want evidence.

Acts four and 13 says when they saw the courage

of Peter and John, they had realized that they were

unschooled and ordinary men.

And they were astonished and they took note

that these men had been with Jesus.

May this be said about you and I.

They may not be impressive,

not trying to be the best preacher.

I'm not trying to have the best songs.

I just want people to recognize that I've been with Jesus.

I might not come from the best family.

I might not come from the best neighborhood.

I might not have a whole lot of money in my pocket.

I might not have popularity.

But if somebody can look at me and say,

I know that they've been with Jesus,

it looks like they've spent some time with God

in Buffalo, New York.

It looks like they've poured it out all on the altar.

It looks like they got unashamed for the gospel.

anybody in the room unashamed,

saved for Christ I live and for Christ I die.

I'm not doing this for my neighbor

but I want people to know that I've been with Jesus.

I want people to know that I've been in his presence.

I want people to experience him when I get around.

People got healed by Paul's shadow.

When people are getting healed by you,

I wanna walk into room and sip this break off.

I want to send me to places and addictions break off.

I want to go to my school and all of a sudden the kids who are dealing with suicide are

getting saved and transformed.

I believe there's a generation in this room that will rise up and say I'm going to be

like Jesus.

I want to be like the next influencer.

I'm not trying to be like my friends.

I'm trying to be like Jesus.

Anybody wanna be like Jesus in the room?

I wanna be like him.

I wanna walk like him.

I wanna talk like him.

I wanna smell like him.

I'm gonna be like Jesus.

There's a generation that needs to know him

and they're gonna know him through me.

I take up my mandate.

I take up my call.

I pick up the mentor.

I'm next.

I'm next.

God's gonna do it through me.

I'm not waiting till I get older to preach the gospel.

I'll do it up and down my hallways.

I'll do it on my Instagram.

I'll do it on my TikTok.

God, just give me a few people and I'll tell them about you.

I just need somebody for the next 10 seconds

to give God a praise for what he's getting ready

to do through you.

God's doing something and he's gonna do it through you.

He's gonna do it through you.

You gotta make a decision.

God, I'm not leaving him the same way I came up.

I'm walking out with evidence.

I am the evidence.

I'm the evidence.

I am the evidence.

I am the evidence.

If you're looking for evidence for God's goodness,

just take a good look at me.

I am the evidence.

I am the evidence.

I am the evidence.

You wanna know what a healing looks like?

You can look at me.

If you're looking for breakthrough,

you can look at me 'cause I am the evidence.

I am the evidence.

Before we go, I want to just tell you three quick things of how you can solidify your encounter.

A few things happened after Paul had his encounter with Jesus.

The first thing he did was repent. Some of you got to do that last night at the altar,

but some of you God is calling to take a step further.

You listening, you hear me?

James says, confess your sins one to another

and you will find healing.

There's some of you that your repentance

is going to require confession to someone.

If there was something about you that nobody knows about,

That means that you have something to confess.

And so we're gonna break out of here.

I don't know what the rest of the schedule is,

but you got some time on your hands.

Find someone that you trust.

Say, "Ah, I've repented,

but there's another step to my repentance.

I need to walk in accountability

'cause if truly I'm going to be changed,

I've gotta tell somebody about it

because the enemy wants to use secrets

to try to hold you back.

But I believe that God's calling a generation

to have a secret place, not a secret life.

A lot of people fall out of church

'cause they had a secret life and not a secret place.

And so commit to having no secrets,

commit to having no secrets.

It's not gonna be easy, but today,

let this weekend be the day

that you put your youth leader to the side.

You put your youth president or your youth pastor to the side

and say, "I've got to tell you something."

So we repent, but we must also witness.

Paul at once started preaching.

He had this encounter with Jesus.

At once, he started preaching.

And so you have the opportunity that when you leave out of here to tell somebody about

what happened, tell your testimony.

Share your testimony.

Share the gospel.

This is the great commission.

How do you fulfill that?

You can start by sharing what God has done.

And there's ways they could put this on the screen.

Y'all could, I'm not gonna go through all of it,

but these are ways that you can share your story.

These are ways that you can fulfill the great commission.

You can tell your Jesus story.

You could use social media, invite people to church,

pray with people, show kindness through action,

share scripture and conversation,

pray for opportunities to share,

study and practice sharing.

Can't go into all of them in detail,

but ask the Holy Spirit to lead you as you witness,

this is what you're called to do, to witness.

Third thing.

Commit to growth.

Commit to growing in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

that how do I sustain and encounter?

How do I respond to light?

Commit to growth.

Committing to growth means sowing seeds.

Opening up God's word.

Having a time and a place for prayer.

Being committed to being on the journey

of following Jesus.

I like that discipline.

We need discipline more than ever.

See Paul, yes he goes and he preaches immediately, but he goes away for some time to study and

to learn.

So this is how we respond to what God wants to do in a generation.

This is how we respond to an encounter in his presence.

So don't just stop an encounter.

Let's move to evidence.

Fruit.

Ezekiel 47, 12 says that fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river.

Their leaves will not wither nor will their fruit fail every month.

Somebody say every month.

They will bear fruit because the water from the sanctuary flows through them and their

fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing.

And so when you commit yourself to growing,

the promise of God is that you shall produce fruit.

And you can produce fruit in any season, any condition,

any circumstance, and the fruit that you produce

will be food, there's a world that is hungry for truth.

So world hungry and desperate.

And so God is going to give you fruit to feed them

and their leaves for healing.

so you carry healing power in what you will produce.

I believe in you.

I believe so greatly in this generation.

I believe in what God wants to do in you.

But you have got to believe it for yourself.

Does anybody believe that they're called

to do something great in this generation?

I should see every hand up.

Anybody believe that they're called to do something great

in this generation?

Don't believe the lies of the enemy.

believe what God has spoken.

So I'm gonna pray for you

and speak a blessing and an impartation over your life

that God would seal what he has done today.
