Reclaiming Truth

In this episode of Reclaiming Truth, hosts Mike Wilson and Larry Montgomery examine one of the most widely taught ideas in modern Christianity: the sinner’s prayer. Many people have been told that salvation comes simply by repeating a prayer, but is that teaching actually found in Scripture? Together, Mike and Larry open the Bible to explore what it truly means to “call on the name of the Lord,” looking carefully at passages often used to support the sinner’s prayer and examining them in their full context. Through thoughtful discussion and biblical study, they challenge listeners to compare tradition with the inspired Word of God and consider what Scripture teaches about faith, repentance, confession, baptism, and faithful obedience on the narrow path of life.

What is Reclaiming Truth?

What have you been taught? In Reclaiming Truth hosts Mike Wilson and Larry Montgomery dig into Scripture to separate fact from fiction about what the Bible really says. In a world full of assumptions, traditions, and half-quoted verses, they ask honest questions and let the Word speak for itself.

RT Episode 2

00:00:00 Speaker 1: Welcome to Reclaiming Truth. Your host are Mike Wilson and Larry Montgomery. There is only one way to know you are on the narrow path of life. How were you taught in our religious walk with God? There are so many different things taught as we walk that narrow path. It is our desire to discuss religious topics and compare them to the inspired Word of God. The Bible is what you have been taught. Fact or fiction? We are glad you have joined us today. Mike, what is our topic today?

00:00:41 Speaker 2: Our topic today is the Sinner's Prayer. Is it fact? Is it really in the Bible or is it fiction?

00:00:48 Speaker 1: Sounds like a good topic to me. Uh, when we talk about God and His Word, we want it all to be in truth, not adding to the Word of God, not taken away from the Word of God. Neither do we want to compromise, to make something fit a certain belief. Today's conversion conversation rather, is on the sinner's prayer. Often I see people on social media tell someone if they want to be saved, all they need to do is bow their heads and say a sinner's prayer. Is it true that the that no matter what we do, as long as we have said the sinner's prayer, we are going to go to heaven because of what Jesus did for us? My question would be is the sinner's prayer in the Bible? And if so, can we read it? Book, chapter and verse please. I know many use Romans ten thirteen, along with acts two twenty one and John six thirty seven to advocate for the doctrine for the sinner's prayer. What do you think, Mike?

00:01:58 Speaker 2: Um. I've run into this a lot throughout my my life. The reason why I didn't know the gospel or the truth of the gospel was because when I was being taught things we weren't doing, they weren't reading the context of the letter to me. They were just taking a verse out and saying, this is what this verse says. That changes a lot. Um, I've been to a Bible college. I've read the Bible completely through more times than I can say. And, uh. Romans ten nine through thirteen must stay in context. If you look back at the beginning of the letter, it's written to baptize Believers in sin in Christ. Romans six one through eleven says that. I mean Paul. Paul actually says, don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ baptized, or were buried with him into death, and we were raised out of the waters of baptism? Uh, to start a new life. And it says, if we have been buried with him in the waters of baptism like he was and raised to life like he was, we will surely live with him. Um. And then, you know, we were added to the church. If you look in acts chapter two, verses forty through forty seven, this was after the famous acts two thirty eight. You know, those who repent and are baptized will be saved. When you get to acts two forty three forty seven, it says they were added to the church and that came after they were baptized. Paul is stressing in Romans ten nine through thirteen, as salvation comes through the act of faith and not works of the mosaic Law. In verse thirteen, Paul sums up his point. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Um, so what's the name of the Lord? You know, we all know it's Jesus. John one one, John one eighteen through twenty. And John twenty. Verse twenty eight says that Jesus is God. That kind of makes everything that Jesus says, well, if we read Matthew seventeen, let's go there. Let's let's go to Matthew seventeen. And I'm going to start in verse one I'm going to read through to verse five. And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like that of the sun, and his clothes became white as light. Behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah. And they were talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it's good that we are here. If you wish, I'll make three tents here, one for Moses and one for you, and one for Elijah. And he was still speaking, when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And a voice from the cloud said, Speaking of Jesus, this is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him. God tells him in verse five to basically stop listening to Moses and Elijah and pay attention to his son Jesus. That makes everything about salvation and eternal life and our walk on the narrow path very important.

00:06:06 Speaker 1: What you spoke today is truth, and there seems to be much misunderstanding on what is calling on the name of the Lord. How does a person do this? Which is really asking, how is one saved?

00:06:23 Speaker 2: Jesus told the twelve apostles several times that he was going to let himself be killed on the third day and be raised to life. John eleven twenty five Jesus said to mark that he is the resurrection and the life, and whoever believes in him would have eternal life. So back to us listening to what the Lord Jesus, whose God says about these things. Um, if you look in Luke chapter thirteen, verse three and thirteen, verse five, the Lord says, unless you repent, you will all perish. In John three three, Jesus said, they must be born again or there would be no entry into God's kingdom. John three five. The Lord Jesus said that we needed to be born of the water and the spirit. Now if you look at acts two thirty eight and Peter says, after you repent and you're immersed in water, you receive forgiveness of sins, and then the Holy Spirit will come and live with you. So the question would be to ask yourself, what if I don't get water immersed? Am I going to have forgiveness of sins? Is the spirit going to come and live with me? And there's people that'll say no. You're baptized because of forgiveness of sins. And and that's not what the original Greek text says. It says baptized into Jesus. The word is ace. The Greek word is ace. For it to be because of it would have to be the Greek word dia, and it's not there. Jesus in John six verse fifty three said, eat my flesh or have no life in you. We actually internalize his life. We walk the walk as Jesus would. We try in ways we know that our sins are taken care of. In First John, you read as you walk in the light, as he is in the light, his blood continues to cleanse you if you sin. Jesus said in John chapter thirteen verse eight, be washed by me, or you have no share in me. In Matthew chapter ten thirty two through thirty three, Jesus said, confess me before men, or I will not confess you before my father. So it may. It's important that we go out there and tell other people about Jesus. Stay faithful to the point of death or you won't have a crown of life. That's revelation two ten. So you definitely gotta repent. You gotta stay faithful to our Lord Jesus. You know, you you gotta stay there. And then finally, in Mark chapter sixteen, verses fifteen and sixteen, Jesus said, unless you believe and are baptized, there's no salvation. Want to know that a godly life is a must if we're to please our master, the Lord Jesus Christ. At some point in our lives, we must accept the responsibility of confessing our salvation in Christ. When you get a chance, read the account of the ten talents in Matthew starting in chapter twenty four, fourteen and following. You know, you got three guys that are supposed to run a business and two guys made a profit. They found more Christians. One got buried his talent. He didn't do anything with it. And look what happened to him. There's some. I can give you some examples of confessing. Jesus. Okay. Peter confessed. Jesus is the Christ in Matthew chapter thirteen through nineteen. And you know, in that chapter Jesus said to Peter, I will give you the keys to the kingdom. The Greek word is clas, meaning many. And if you look at it, there isn't one thing you do to get in to the kingdom. There's several. You gotta hear the gospel. You gotta believe the gospel. You've gotta repent of your sins. You've gotta confess Jesus. You've gotta be immersed in water and you've gotta stay faithful. There are six keys right there. The Ethiopian eunuch confessed him two. In acts eight thirty seven, the whole crowd at Pentecost confessed to Peter that they were wrong and asked him, what must we do? And we all know what he said repent and be baptized. Even the thief on the cross confessed Jesus, if you go back and read that carefully, you'll see him say to Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom. And then you ask yourself, how did the thief know about the kingdom? Jesus didn't tell him while he was on the cross. He must have been around when Jesus was baptizing people and teaching the way. And this guy's repentant on the cross before he died. You also gotta remember this too, that the Mosaic Law did not get ushered in until after the death of our Savior. I'm going to. In my conclusion, I'm going to read Romans ten. Let me go back here and find. Those ten. Ten. Thirteen. For everyone who calls on, the name of the Lord will be saved. Okay, so Paul sums up his words by saying, because everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. This is an appeal to Jesus to do what he said he would do. When we obey His word and do what he said we must do to have our sins forgiven. In acts twenty two sixteen says, why do you terror? Why do you wait? Arise. Be baptized. The Greek says, cause yourself to be immersed in water, washing away your sins.
