Jen Porter (00:00)
Hey lioness, welcome back to an episode of Lioness Women Rooted in Christ. I'm so glad you're here. I'm Jen Porter, leadership and empowerment coach for ambitious and heart-centered women who want to put God at the center of everything that we do. If you joined last week, we focused on our identity in Christ and the one that we focused on was beloved, just how loved we are, how
Our belovedness changes everything when we understand how deeply loved we are by the creator of this world. So if you haven't heard that, go back and listen. It's a powerful message of just how good God is and how our identity in Christ and our belovedness transforms how we show up in the world, how we see ourselves, how we see other people, how we operate, how we make decisions, ⁓ how we look in the mirror.
and what we see when we see ourselves as absolutely beloved. The reason that I'm doing this series, Identity in Christ, is because over years and years of ⁓ supporting people, whether it was on the recruiting side and helping people connect with new jobs or whether it's been in coaching for the last almost decade, what I've noticed is that when
we are not rooted in our identity. When we don't know who we are, we tend to flounder. We can become very lost and we start to absolutely question ourselves. I mean, talk about self doubt and imposter syndrome. If we don't understand who we are and whose we are, we will be susceptible to what the world believes and what the world tells us.
about who we are. And most of that is really volatile. Some of it's full of lies. And, you know, gosh, I think about marketing and how ⁓ there's this ploy to get us to buy things to make ourselves good enough, better, more beautiful, know, thinner, ⁓ smarter, more capable, stronger. All of the products that are, the people, know, companies are trying to sell us is
We're susceptible to those things if we don't understand our true value. That is why I'm doing this series on our identity in Christ. It is essential that we be grounded, rooted, and established in who we are from the inside out. And that is the foundation for us being able to do anything of impact, anything of good in this world.
And I believe that every one of us has called to something really important. And the world needs us. The world needs us to step into what we're called to because there are tremendous needs. And imagine, you know, I've always had this sort of utopian ⁓ dream, you know, vision, like if every one of us were following what we're called to.
Like that is what we're designed to do in this world. If every one of us was obedient to God in what we are called to do and how we're able, how we're to give to this world, I believe every need in this world would be met.
I'm going to say that again. If we all were obedient to the calling that we have on our lives, I believe that every need in the world would be met. There would be no hunger. There would be no injustice. would be no, sure there'd be suffering. You know, there's, can't fix everything, but I just believe that so much of the world's pain is caused from, is caused by sin and it's caused by a lack of activity. You know, this passiveness.
in our lives. So we have a duty to step into our calling. Okay, but we have to know who we are in order to do that. So we started with love because love is the foundation for all of it. We have to know just how deeply loved we are. Today and this week we're going to talk about how we are blessed as a daughter of the king, as a follower of Christ. We are blessed. Okay, so
What does that mean? What does blessed mean? Well, I looked up some definitions of what this is, and one definition really stood out to me. Being blessed is it's a profound God-sourced joy that transcends circumstances. Okay, let me say that again. To be blessed, it's a profound God-sourced joy that transcends circumstances.
And I don't know if you've experienced that. You know, I am certain that if I were to sit down with you, you weren't in my office or we were having coffee somewhere, and I were just to simply ask you, how are you doing? What is going on in your world? What are you facing right now in this season? You would be able to tell me a number of things that are painful, uncertain.
tragic? You would probably tell me about the loss that you've experienced, some of the fears that you're facing, some of the things that are falling apart in your world, the pain of those around you. I am certain you would be able to tell me just how challenging life is for you right now. And I'm wondering, have you ever experienced this sense of being blessed?
even in the midst of those circumstances, to know that you are blessed by God even in the suffering. I'm so curious about what you would tell me if we were together. In fact, I invite you to share with me. ⁓ Jen at discovertrueself.com. Reach out to me and I truly, truly would love to hear from you. So being blessed,
transcends our circumstances. It's a way of being, it's a state of being that is actually unearned. It's a place of, one definition said, it's to be enviable, to be of envy by others because of the blessing that is upon us. It is to be highly favored. It's unmerited grace. It's protection, it's provision. There's all these things that come with being blessed.
I want to share a metaphor about what I was thinking about when it comes to how do we understand what it is to be blessed, that unearned blessing from God. And I was thinking about how it's like being a, if we were adopted, okay, when parents adopt a child, let's say a baby, they don't know that baby. That baby has done absolutely nothing to earn.
favor or love. But the hearts of those parents desire to love and care for and provide for and protect a child. And so they go through the process, an extensive process, of adopting a baby or a child. And that child becomes part of that family. They've done nothing, but that family has said, are mine.
You are ours. You are our baby, our child. And now you have access to everything that we have. So that child comes into a home. They have the warmth of a home, the security of a home. They have perhaps their own room. Maybe they have their own bed. They have a place to sleep, a place of comfort and safety. They have the abundance of the food, whatever's in the pantry and fridge and
whatever those parents can go out and buy to be able to feed the baby. They have truly the inheritance of whatever that family has. certainly I'm thinking about wealth, whatever that family has, that child is going to end up inheriting. But I'm also thinking about the other pieces that come, the love, the...
the generations of care that have come from through that family, the extended family that is now a part of this child's life, the education that this person that this child may receive, the gifts, the play, that you know this community that this child receives and the child has done nothing to deserve this but it is the love of the parents that causes them
to bring that child into that family and bless them. Just highly favor them and lavish them with all the goodness they possibly can muster. In the same way, that is what it's like with the kingdom of God. When we are children of God, that is we are following God, we have said, you you are our Lord and savior and we will follow you. We become children of God.
and we have access to the kingdom. And unlike parents, God is limitless. There's an unlimited supply of love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, the rewards. There's so much that God gives us that we could never possibly earn. And what does he ask for in response, in return?
He really just asks simply for our trust and our obedience. That's literally all he asks for is that we trust in him and his plans and his kingdom and his purposes and that we trust in his goodness, but also that we're obedient to whatever he calls us to do. Now that might seem like a lot, but in exchange for what we're receiving, not only what we receive on earth from the blessings that he just pours out from heaven on us,
but also eternity and the hope and the promises that come from God forever and ever and ever and amen. So to be blessed is to be part of the kingdom. And so when you think about what are some of these blessings that we receive, we often think about monetary blessings and that certainly can be part of it, but
Those kinds of blessings are very fleeting, especially when you have an eternal perspective. Like none of that stuff is gonna go with us when we're gone.
Those blessings are really about, I think about peace that comes from being in God's presence. Peace! You can't even put a price on having peace within us. People are longing for peace because there's so much anxiety right now. So we receive peace. We receive love. We receive acceptance. We are accepted by God.
because of his pouring out his blessing, his promises of blessing his people. We receive protection. You know, I think about the story of Job and when Job was protected and Satan actually called the protection that God had over Job as a hedge, a hedge of protection. There was a layer that protected Job from harm.
that God in negotiation with Satan actually released for a time so that Satan could do this harm against Job to prove his faithfulness. It's an amazing story. I encourage you to go back and read it from the lens of the protection that God gives and then when he pulls that away but he still protects his life, he says you cannot touch his life.
So it's just such a fascinating thing to think about that invisible hedge of protection that God puts around us that protects us from way more than we ever realize. Like we are so protected by God. It is immeasurable, it really is. The provision that he gives us, I he pours out so much to us. know, when you scan your life and think about all the things that you have, you know, the people who love you.
the home that you live in, the job that you have, the community that surrounds you, the access that you have to good things, to food and water and shelter and church, and the ability that we have to worship. There's so many things that God pours out from the gates of heaven to bless us with. I want to read some scripture. So there's a couple of that I've been
meditating on this week and one comes from Deuteronomy 28 and I'm going to read one through six and eleven. So again this is Deuteronomy 28 and I want you to hear this from the standpoint of just how blessed we are and how that is the economy of God. You know, He is just a God that blesses. That's His desire, it's His heart, it's His character and so this is the Word of God.
If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God. I want to read that sentence again. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God. You will be blessed in the city.
and blessed in the country. In other words, no matter where you are, you will be blessed. Doesn't matter if you're in the city or the country, doesn't matter where you live, you will be blessed. The fruit of your womb will be blessed. The crops of your land and the young of your livestock, in other words, your livelihood, will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.
In other words, all the time. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity. That is the nature of God. He is a God who blesses. he, know, maybe the biggest blessing of being in the presence of God is just his, being in relationship with him. That's probably the way that we're blessed, is being in the presence of God.
I don't, it's, there are moments where I have a small glimpse and thankfully it's very, very small, but I have the small glimpse of what it might be like to be separated from God. And it is, it makes me shake. It makes me shudder to think of being separated by God because we receive so much by being in His presence that it would be terrifying to not be in His presence.
That's another way that we are just absolutely blessed by being in the presence of God, but God is, he just, he loves to bless us. I also want to read from Psalm 103, and I'm gonna read one through five. So this is Psalm 103. Praise the Lord, my soul, all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, ⁓ my soul, and forget not all his benefits.
who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles.
This, just these five verses in Psalm 103, profound. Because when you listen to it from the standpoint of this is all God, that God does all this just by being his child, he does all of this for us. And listen to, I'm gonna read it again, but listen to, these are his benefits. It says, forget not all his benefits. These are the benefits of walking with God.
Okay, there's no job that has benefits like this. There's nothing on this earth, nothing in this universe apart from God that can give us this. This is why we walk with God because he is so good and offers so like we'd be kind of crazy not to. So I'm going to read it again and I want you to hear this from the standpoint of what are the benefits that we receive by walking with God.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, all my inmost being. Praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases. Who redeems your life from the pit.
and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles. Who can't relate to this? The sins that are forgiven, You scan your life, think about, I I shudder again to think. All the things, I mean, sometimes when I'm reminded,
of the things that I've done that have been harmful and hurtful to others and to myself honestly. You know sometimes I just that shame starts to rise up and I just say Jesus. That's literally the prayer that I pray is one word, Jesus. I say it so that my soul can hear it, my mind can hear it because I don't want to fall back into a shame cycle. He forgives us all our sins. He heals all our diseases. How many of us don't need healing? My goodness.
those around us. How many people do you know that need healing right now? He redeems our life from the pit. Have you ever been in a pit? I certainly have. And it is... I think of the like a pig, you know, this from the story of the Bible.
you know somebody was just in the pit with the pigs and the filth. It's not pretty. It's hard to get out of once we're in it. But he redeems our life from the pit. He crowns us with love and compassion. Do you know what it feels like to... I mean I hope you do. I hope you know what it feels like to receive the love and compassion from the one and only God.
He satisfies our desires with good things, because he knows what we need. He actually knows better than we what we need. So he satisfies those desires, those longings, those cries of our heart with good things. And he renews our strength, our youth like the eagles. Just amazing. So, you know, all of these blessings that come with walking in God,
What, again, I'm gonna go back to this point I made earlier. What does God ask us in return? It's actually not a lot. It's simply to trust Him and to be obedient to Him to the extent that we are able. You know, we try, right? I think our life is just simply ⁓ one long bit of trying. And one of the things that I often say is God honors our trying.
He honors our effort. He really does. None of us are gonna get it perfect. We're not made that way. We can't. But in God and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can trust Him and we can walk in obedience. We can try. And the other thing that has come to me in the years, ⁓ kind of in the last decade, is that God...
does call us to obedience. He does. He calls us to obedience, but he does not call us to the outcome. The outcome is his. All he asks is that we trust him and that we try to be obedient. And the truth is we need his help to do both of those things. You might ask, how do we know what he's asking of us? What is it to be obedient? What is he asking of me and how can I be obedient to that?
Well, the first thing is to simply look in the Word of God and see what is He asking of us. It's all there. He's given us the manual. Just read it and listen to the heart of God and what He's asking of His people. That's number one. Number two in obedience is if you stop and listen to God, He will give you specific guidance.
about how you can be obedient today or in the season or in your career or as a leader or as a mom, as a community member, as a family member. There are things that God will nudge you to do and when you believe that you're hearing from God and you do those things, that's an act of obedience. Heaven celebrates that.
So remember that you are so, so blessed. All of these things are available to you. You have access to everything in the kingdom right now. Right now you have ⁓ access to it just like an adopted child. Though he or she may feel un... ⁓ What's the word? They don't feel like they deserve it. Undeserving? Like why did you adopt me?
You know, who could understand that kind of love? A child can't really understand it, but all we have to do is surrender to it. We just have to say, you know what, I didn't earn this, I do not deserve it, but God has freely given me this. I'm not going to resist it. I'm going to actually lean into it and receive everything that God has for me. The peace, the joy, the protection, the safety, the provision.
the goodness, the promises, the hope, all of that is available to you today. Thank you for being with me. I'm going leave you with a blessing. This comes from Numbers 6. Numbers is a book in the Old Testament. Chapter 6, check it out if you've never read it. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May he make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you.
May the Lord lift His countenance upon you and give you peace today.
Be blessed, be beloved, walk in your inheritance as daughters of the king. And I look forward to seeing you the ⁓ next episode. We're gonna continue on this journey of being blessed. We'll go deeper in this concept and I will see you then. Take care.
