The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

The past week Gwangju held the first annual Buskers World Cup, and it's honestly been magic to have all these people in the city. So, we dedicated part 4 tonight to some of the finalists as the grand finale was going down as we finished the show. Part 1 & 2 (along with 3), you know how we do with all the new music from the past weekend.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 17, 2022 while the Buskers World Cup Grand Finale was fully underway.  Tonight in part 4 we had a very special presentation, with us paying homage to some of the buskers who traveled all the way across the world to join us in Gwangju for the first annual Buskers World Cup.  It was amazing meeting and making friends with these talented people, and it's so exciting watching them get the recognition they so thoroughly deserve.  Big up to all the artists involved!  For our usual steelo, we had a ton of new favorites to cover in parts 1 & 2 tonight with Big Thief heading into Seoul, new joints out from SAULT, Drugdealer, and Nature TV amongst others.  Big new pop tunes to give airtime in part 3 as well, with The 1975 and Tove Lo out with new albums, and singles from plenty of others to let into space.

It is 20 hours past midnight and a gorgeous Monday has bleered and leered at us and it’s time to get the new muses whirling once again, with tonight entered in the cosmic ledger as October 17, 2022. Danno here as always on the mic in studio 2 at GFN between 8 & 10 like I do, how do you do? Another big weekend of new music has come and gone, and in fact due to the holidays the last two weeks, this is our first new muses Monday in a good while. Tonight with the grand finale of the Buskers World Cup in full effect tonight, we’re going to pay tribute to some of the finalists who perform tonight and that we’ve had a chance to befriend this past glorious week here in our fair city of light, so that’s part 4 for tonight and props to all the artists international and Korean who took part. Right now though we create an American Utopia with David Byrne and talk about Spike Lee’s film adaptation of the Broadway musical, and we’ll talk the importance of this after the Talking Heads frontman does his thing live on stage. This is The Drop.
David Byrne – Burning Down The House (Live)
The Drop is finally back at it for another edition of our new muses programming, and naturally we tip our cap and refill your drink for joining us this evening. Tonight a bit of a special presentation in part 4 as Gwangju’s Buskers World Cup is wrapping tonight with the grand finale of an incredible week of music here in the city, and we shine the spotlight on some of the finalists performing tonight to close the show, many of whom we’ve had the great pleasure of getting to know this past week, and salute to all of the over 100 artists who took part, especially our local favorites.
As to the history tonight and our usual TIGHT (or) feature to open proceedings, that was David Byrne with a live performance of the Talking Heads classic Burning Down The House on Broadway for his American Utopia musical. It was on this date two years ago that director Spike Lee debuted the film version of David Byrne's American Utopia, which ran on Broadway from October 2019 to February 2020. Many of the songs from Stop Making Sense, the concert film Byrne did with the Talking Heads, are also in this one, but a showstopper is a cover of Janelle Monáe's "Hell You Talmbout," which ties into the Black Lives Matter movement..
Obviously, the streets of America over the summer had roiled with righteous indignation over the killing of George Floyd at the hands of the police. The song lists off the many, many people of color slain at the hands of law enforcement over the years that garnered attention, and Monae’s powerful version of the American Utopia original was smashing.
Rest in power to all the victims remembered or not, and may there someday be some kind of reconciliation and restitution.

So moving along, it’s been three weeks so we have got to get into the new tunes for this week, and up next we have our tune of the week with Nature TV out with Self Esteem up next to be followed by Drugdealer letting Kate Bollinger do the vocal honors on their latest, and we’ll close with another show favorite and Goth Babe riding the waves in Iceland. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
The Drop recommissions on the verbal front after our starter triangle for tonight’s show. It is our New Muses Monday and the first in several weeks due to the holidays over the past couple of Monday nights, and a very special part 4 coming up after 9:30 with a spotlight on the very first Buskers World Cup finalists who were doing their thing tonight, so stay tuned for that. As to what just happened, let’s explain ourselves as the details on what we just made go bump in the night…
Nature TV – Self Esteem (…out today is the latest from the Brighton boys. This band just keeps putting out quality tunes seemingly non-stop. Not sure if an EP is on the way, but it certainly seems so, with this dropping today and another tune called One for the Road out Oct 6. We’ll have to see, but we’ll obviously keep you posted.)
Drugdealer feat Kate Bollinger – Pictures of You (…out in a few weeks is the new LP from Drugdealer, Hiding In Plain sight and this latest single sees a great friend of the show Kate Bollinger do the vocals on this track. It’s amazing to see the trajectory of Kate’s career, and super honored she’s been on the show twice and seeing things going so well.)
Goth Babe – Surfing In Iceland (…so the only way to summarize this tune is straight from the artist, “Went to freakin’ Iceland with @arcteryx for a project you’ll all see soon. Drank from a stream and got sick, got better, surfed fun waves, and snowmobiled to a remote house on a cliff to write tunes. Life is nuts.”)
So moving towards the first quarter buzzer, we still have a couple big tunes to check out, with a band called Plains up next on a cut called Hurricane. This is the project of Katie Crutchfield aka Waxahatchee and Jess Williamson who dropped this on an album September 30 called I Will Walk With You Always, and it’s just a striking LP, do check in full. To close we have an artist called Field Medic and a tune called always emptiness, which is the solo project of American lo-fi artist Kevin Patrick Sullivan, although nothing we can see on a larger project with this new joint. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Plains – Hurricane
Field Medic – always emptiness

II
Into the slow burn 2nd quarter on our New Muses Monday night, the first edition in a while with the holidaze these past two Mondays and thank the power above for both of them, it must be added. We have a special highlight of the Buskers World Cup finalists playing at the Grand Finale today, and that will take up all of part 4 this evening, but for now we’re still going through the new stuff and bits we missed these past couple weeks, so let’s do that...
SAULT – Angel (…a tune that runs just over 10 minutes is the lead single to the band’s upcoming LP. The album is called X, but the details as usual are quite scant with this mysterious group, so keep an ear out.)
Weyes Blood – Grapevine (…the 2nd single from the group’s new album dropping November 18, and is just as high quality as the previous. And In The Dark, Hearts Aglow is the follow-up to the smashing 2019 LP Titanic Rising.)
Pod, socials, etc…
Alright, so let’s get another pair of cuts out on the more soulful tip to finish the fresh cuts buffet for tonight’s first half. Up next we have Paw Paw Rod leading off, and Hotel Ugly finishes the diad. We’ll talk the tunes after the tunes do what they do, but for now THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday evening.
____
Back at it on The Drop as we stretch towards the . Danno here, how goes how goes thanks for tuning in whether now or in the future. We just wrapped our new tunes to taste test for the first hour although we do have the new pop coming for part 3, and a special spotlight on the Buskers World Cup finalists who have wrapped the grand finale tonight…
Paw Paw Rod – Lovetap (…just dropped Friday is Another Paw Paw Rod EP, and not just being blasé about it, that is the actual title. The artist out of OKC just keeps seemingly going from strength to strength, and this one is getting big love from the tastemakers this past weekend, so def worth a full listen if you liked that bump.)
Hotel Ugly – Mannequin Song (…this is a duo out of Houston, TX and this would be their latest single, a standalone. The duo after a successful sold out mini-tour of their home state of Texas are testing the waters farther afield, but not this far afield, so good luck to a very good rising band on their headling tour.)
Alright so it’s time to highlight a big act on the way to Korea and we go back to Nov 12 as Khruangbin is not the only band in Seoul that night. Big Thief is coming to Rolling Hall that night as well, and we’ll close the hour with a pair of tunes from their latest brilliant double album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, with the first tune being simulation swarm and wrapping things is our personal favorite from the LP, Sparrow. THIS is The Drop and that’s it for parts 1 & 2.
Big Thief – Simulation Swarm
Big Thief - Sparrow

Part III: New Pop

The 1975 – Oh Caroline
- Being Funny In A Foreign Language just dropped over the weekend to rave reviews from critics and fans alike, with the album being the band’s 5th studio full-length.
- This would be the 5th song on said 5th album, so do check if you dug that and haven’t peeped the album yet.
Tove Lo - Grapefruit
- Another great album out this weekend is Tove Lo’s latest, which has been highly anticipated.
- Also the 5th career album for the Swedish singer, Dirt Femme is the title and has been making major waves since release on Friday courtesy of Pretty Swede Records.
SG Lewis feat Tove Lo – Call On Me
- This is undoubtedly a stylistic change for Sam Smith as it is way dark, but listeners in a Billboard poll absolutely loved it, bringing in nearly half of the vote for best new song of the week.
- This tune is the latest single to drop from Smith’s upcoming fourth studio album, which is still yet to be announced as far as title and release date.
Fazerdaze – Thick of the Honey
- For those unaware, this is an artist based in Christchurch NZ, and part of the Break LP, which dropped Friday.
- As to the album from the artist in Amelia Murray’s own words, “In a society where being strong and resilient is often held up like a badge of honour, it’s much, much harder to acknowledge when enough is enough – to accept when it’s time to let go.”
Zach Bryan - Starved
- Rising singer-songwriter Zach Bryan dropped his new song “Starved” on Monday, and it’s since crept its way into the Top 5 on the Genius Top Songs chart.
- The Navy veteran—who broke onto the country music scene with his 2022 album American Heartbreak—shared a live version of the track on YouTube before uploading the official version to streaming services. “Starved” marks Bryan’s second single since dropping his 2022 EP Summertime Blues, following “Burn, Burn, Burn.”
Hope Tala – Stayed at the Party
- This is the 2nd recent single from the British singer-songwriter in the past few months.
- The artist says that this song was written back in 2021, and is kind of a representation of the singer’s pre-pandemic mindstate, which oscillated between partying annnnnnd existential dread.
Queen – Face It Alone

Part IV – Buskers World Cup

Katie Ferrara – This City
- One of our favorites from this week who has really done well at the Buskers World Cup in reaching the finals is Ferrara who’s out of LA.
- It’s been great to get to know Ferrara and all of these artists a bit during a very hectic competition. This tune dropped as a standalone last year, by the way. Keep an eye out, she’s going far.
Borja Catanesi feat Thierry James – What a Day
- This is one of several absolutely mind blowing guitarists involved in this competion, and Catanesi originally hails from Valencia, Spain.
- Also a very cool person we’ve had a great time talking to this week. What a performer as well.

Moses Concas – Medieval Bastards
- This is a tune from 2017 by the artist.
- And really, if you’ve seen Moses out on the streets playing this week, you will definitely remember it. A deft harmonica player and beat boxer, all of the performances this week on the streets or on the stage have left people agog.

Gap’s Orchestra – Danza Malena
- Another great band out of Italy right here that are vying for the big prize tonight.
- The band wants to bring Italian folk music to the world, and they certainly have been doing that this week in Gwnagju.

Malachy – Highway
- Great artist right here out of Western Australia and an absolutely magic fun guy to talk to, Malachy is just a guy who loves to play for the people, even when those people are late night drunkards at an apartment afterhours last Saturday morning.

Ben Jansz – Woman
- Another Aussie to close our Buskers Tribute tonight, also in the finals but hailing from Melbourne this time.
- This was one of the first artists to strike me this week, playing a wicked acoustic guitar solo song brilliantly lyricized. Honestly, it takes a lot for me to take notice but this certainly did, and after finishing the song the artist apologized for not bringing like 6 instruments and playing them all himself. Hahah…brilliant.
