Wake Up, Look Up

In this episode of Wake Up, Look Up, Pastor Zach explores what science says about dad jokes and why they may play a bigger role in family life than we realize. He reflects on Proverbs 17:22 and the power fathers have to bring joy, encouragement, and healing through their words. As we celebrate Father's Day, this conversation offers both appreciation for dads and a challenge to use their influence to build up those they love.

What is Wake Up, Look Up?

Check out new episodes of our daily podcast, Wake Up, Look Up, with Zach Weihrauch as he interprets what's happening in our world through the lens of the gospel.

Hello everyone, and thanks for listening to Wake Up, Look Up, a podcast where we connect events happening in real time to the gospel of Jesus Christ. I'm Zach Weihrauch, and in today's episode, we're asking the question, does God laugh at dad jokes? This is prompted by Father's Day, of course, but also by an article I read in the Washington Post which said that science suggests cringe worthy dad jokes may actually serve a purpose. That's right. Those jokes that make you groan actually are doing something good for you on a scientific level. Researchers at the University of North Carolina studied over 32,000 dad jokes and identified three common features. Puns, literization, and pedantic humor. You know what a dad joke looks like, right? Studies actually found that these jokes perform a actual function in the family, including strengthening family bonds, increasing emotional and mental health, helping people cope with stress. In other words, dad is kind of the glue guy of the family. And his jokes, while you may act like you don't like them on a scientific level, are, actually good for you. Playful jokes, playful interactions with dad help a child develop. They help a child develop creativity, kindness, and a better attachment to dad and to the family. That's right, dads. It is actually good that we tell our jokes. When I read this, it, made me think about Proverbs 17:22, which says this. A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. the reason it made me think of that is because I think we all know dads can do either. That's right, Dads. I started by celebrating us, but let's be honest, nobody can make us laugh like dad. And nobody can crush us like dad either. dads have a unique power, a unique ability in the family. One the Bible talks about over and over again. And now one that science itself is affirming. that's because Dad's words can either lift your spirit or crush your spirit. So there's an affirmation in this for us as fathers and our playful sense of humor. But there's also a challenge. We have incredible redemptive ability in the lives of our children. One joke at a time, one smile at a time, one wink and a nod at a time. But of course, we also can do a lot of damage. And maybe Father's Day isn't just a time to celebrate dad and to appreciate his sense of humor, but it's also a time for dads to take stock of the impact we're having on our families for good or for bad to give life or to take it. Of course, it is also a time to celebrate dad, to appreciate the benefits we see and the ones we don't. Because the truth is, a lot of us have spent time talking and thinking about how. How we could be better dads, or how we might have wished our dads were better dads or their dads were better dads. But very few of us have done enough appreciating the impact that our dads have had, even in the little things. Even in the little moments, like in the joking. So this podcast goes out to you dads. We love you. We appreciate you. You have the ability to lift us up. So do it. Maybe what dad wants for Father's Day is for you to finally tell him you do think he's funny and that you're thankful for the scientific and real impact he's having on your life. Dads continue to shape your family through humor, through the gospel, and through the love you have for them. Hey, thanks for checking out. Wake Up, Look Up.
