And here’s today’s news from National Health Executive on Wednesday the 22nd of May 2024.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has made a statement of policy intent which could signal an important move toward a new regulatory framework for medical devices in the UK.
The MHRA has set out how it intends to recognise regulatory approvals from Australia, the United States, Canada, and relevant national bodies residing in member states of the European Union and European Economic Area. Discussions are ongoing with Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency as to whether it could join that list too.

Every radiography department in England is set to benefit from game-changing AI that can find cancer cells two-and-a-half times faster than doctors alone. The roll-out will begin in a matter of weeks according to the government and will be backed by £15.5m of funding.
The AI will automatically review CT and MRI scans to help doctors distinguish between cancerous cells and healthy organs. The government describes the move as a major step in the fight to cut waiting lists, alleviate pressure on hospitals, free up staff time, and support people in care settings to live more independently.

A new standardised tool that can help identify and respond to deteriorations in pregnant women is set to be fully rolled out across the NHS in England by March 2026. Maternity early warning scores are already widely used in UK hospitals but implementation varies.
A study led by the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre aimed to create a standardised maternity early warning score that would be suitable for a nationwide roll-out. The NIHR says the resulting maternity early warning score is more accurate and will generate fewer false alerts than current practice.
