I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on another hot one here in Gwangju followed by a pristine cool nighttime vibe, and we hope you enjoyed the blessings of summer’s start today, albeit unofficially. It is Thursday night and that means it’s time to make everything alllllright as our Sampled & AMPED thing is in full swing, with today baked and then cooled on the windowsill of the cosmos as June 2, 2022. This is Danno, salutations to all of you getting with this thing either now or later, and as always there is lots to do this evening. Our Sampled funk & soul first hour has lots of new cuts to taste test with Orgone, Rudy De Anda, Amerigo Gazaway, and Ko Shin Moon being highlights. As always never messin around Dan Lloyd brings the ruckus with our AMPED rock feature later on with a bevvy of new joints and albums out tomorrow to highlight before 10 bells ring tonight. But that’s all for later as right now we go back to the Rainbow Theater in London on June 4, 1977 and we’ll discuss further after The Legend does his thing on stage. THIS is The Drop.
Bob Marley & The Wailers – Trenchtown Rock (Live at the Rainbow Theater in 1977)
The Drop has begun the rock along with the funk and punk and soul and such for tonight’s two hour sesh. Danno here, doing the usual unusual on the air coming at you but not necessarily for you from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju.
That was The Legend himself Bob Marley along with his Wailers band performing live at The Rainbow Theater London in 1977. Trenchtown Rock was a favorite staple opener for the king of reggae for many years and this show was no exception.
The slate of gigs at the Rainbow Theater were scheduled to go 6 nights on the trot all sold out, but unfortunately the last two shows were called off because of a serious toe injury Marley sustained in a friendly soccer game with French journalists just before the tour's start in Paris. Subsequently the tour's second leg in the United States would be postponed and then canceled.
Interestingly, once Marley had passed away just under 4 years later, there was a rumor that he had died from a gangrene infection due to this injury, which was something that knocked around for years falsely after his death.
Of course, anybody that has taken their Bob Marley 101 knows he passed away from cancer, may he rest in power supreme. Always great to listen to any artist at the height of their powers, but Bob Marley is truly in a class of his own in that department, amongst others.

So we started old school tonight, as we are wont to do, but it’s time to get into the new biz for this week. Up next we have Orgone out with a new album which we’ll talk about after the bump, and the Cali soul slam will be followed by a new remix from Dr Rubberfunk along with The Savants of Soul. We’ll talk about the triad after all the corners are touched but for now THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
______
Back to the microphone here in studio 2 before we head to part 2 on our Sampled funk & soul Thursday soiree. Danno here doing my thing, this is what I do every night on GFN between 8 & 10, and for those just now getting with it we just rocked a trio of new & recent joints in the funk & soul rubric, so let’s run it down right now...
Orgone feat Phil Diamond – Burn (…this is a joint off the veteran Cali band’s latest LP which they self-released via their label. The new LP is called Lost Knights and that’s nights with a k as in chevalier as one might say en francais, available everywhere now. Very solid LP but I had to choose that particular joint as burn was indeed the word of the day here in Gwangju today.)
Smudge All-Stars – B Side (Dr Rubberfunk remix) (…this one is a new remix of the London-based band lead by Richie Stevens with the reimgining courtesy of veteran DJ Dr Rubberfunk aka Simon Ward. And props to Fred Wesley on the vox right there we must mention.)
The Savants of Soul – Love and Affection (…the latest from the Southern style soul and funk massive out of Gainesville, FL right there. This tune dropped last Friday as a standalone, and big up to this 9 piece megalith who are clearly doin things right down south.)
Okay, so that’s just about the end of part 1 but we have a brilliant and quite extended remix of Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On from Flight Facilities that we gotta give some real estate to so that it can breathe properly here on the air, but streaming you won’t miss a beat. This is The Drop gettin’ it on for your Sampled funk & soul Thursdaze.
Marvin Gaye – Let’s Get It On (Flight Facilities remix)

II
The Drop returns and the 2nd can is now cold opened here on our Sampled funk & soul first hour. Danno here doing the thing that I do on the airs, and Dan Lloyd joins us when we hit 9 bells for our AMPED Thursday slap sesh. We just got a bit of tropicalia and then went to West Africa for that first pair of joints to simmer it down, so let’s get to the damage ...
Rudy De Anda – Turista (…this is the latest from Karma Chief records and our favorite Chicagoan outta the West Coast. Not sure about an album upcoming or anything, so I guess we’ll have to keep an eye out, although nothing announced as of yet. De Anda’s last album Tender Epoch was lovely stuff, by the way, if you wanna hear more.)
Richard Bona feat Oumou Sangare – DUURU WAKANI (…an interesting collab right here, with legendary bassist and multi-instrumentalist Richard Bona taking a deep turn into the Afrobeats sound with his latest work. For those unfamiliar, Oumou Sangare is a Grammy-winning musician from Mali of Wassoulou descent, and this title I believe means circle around although I may be mistaken there.)
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So moving ahead, we have a trio of quick hitters up next with Amerigo Gazaway batting leadoff, then we have Ko Shin Moon and Jean Carne to finish off everything smoothly, after which we’ll talk a bit more about it. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday evening.
___
Back on The Drop and into the final airbreak of the first half this evening on our Sampled funk & soul Thursday foray. Danno here doing the thing, and Dan Lloyd busts in shortly for our weekly AMPED rock session. Now as to what just went out into the cosmos, that was a trio of quickies with…
Amerigo Gazaway – Home (…this cut is the final tune on the artist’s latest official release, an LP called Gratitude. Do go and check out the rest of Gazaway’s catalogue whether restricted by copyright or not, the productions are superb.)
Ko Shin Moon – Konyali (…this is the latest from a new EP that is out next Friday on June 10 called Miniature 2. Ko is obviously of Korean descent, but is based in France, with this album taking inspiration from Turkey for the sounds. The colorful video to this tune is a lovely bit you can check out as well.)
Jean Carne feat Jazz Is Dead – My Mystic Life (…the full album Jazz Is Dead or JID012 is out as of last Friday. For those unfamiliar, Carne has been working the vocals since the 1970s and has a stupefying range even still of 5 octaves, and for those not so initiated Jazz Is Dead is the label out of LA run by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.)
Alright, so that’s basically a wrap on the first half, but we’ll bump up the bpm’s right now starting with Franc Moody and a cut called I’m in a Funk, then we have a new remix of Bohannon’s classic Let’s Start The Dance called Let’s Start to Dance Again with the remix being done by Dimitri from Paris, and that’s gonna be it for now until Dan Lloyd kicks in the door to start part 3. THIS is The Drop and it is halftime.
Franc Moody – I’m in a Funk
Bohannon – Let’s Start to Dance Again (Dimitri from Paris remix)

III & IV AMPED

Sex Pistols – Pretty Vacant
The Flatliners – Performative Hours
The Garden – Freight Yard
Horsegirl – Dirtbag Transformation
Maneskin – Supermodel
Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus

The Interrupters – Anything Was Better
Momma – Lucky
Grumpster – Better Than Dead
GWAR – Berserker Mode
Sincere Engineer – Library of Broken Bindings
Neil Young with Crazy Horse – Standing in the Light of Love

Sex Pistols – Pretty Vacant
Danny Boyle’s long-awaited series about the legendary punk band, Pistol, is out now, to very mixed reviews. A lot of the criticism centres around the usual rock biopic clichés, and the fact that the assembled cast is far too good looking to portray the group of misfits the show is based on. Rolling Stone gave it 3/5 and said “Thanks to Boyle, the cliched nature of Pistol is disappointing but not crippling. Still, the show seems as overdone as the dinosaur bands the Pistols were rebelling against, with a story that moves at a leisurely pace for five hours.”

The Flatliners – Performative Hours
The Flatliners have been gradually expanding their 20th anniversary tour, but they've kept quiet about new music... until now! They've just announced their first album in five years, New Ruin, due August 5 via Fat Wreck Chords/Dine Alone. The first single is "Performative Hours," and it's exactly the kind of anthemic punk that this band has always excelled at, with huge hooks and some vicious scream-singing from Chris Cresswell. It comes with a Mitch Barnes-directed video, and here's what the band says:
We are pleased to introduce you to the most tumultuous host working in television today, Mr. hanging-on-by-a-thread himself - Ron Regal!
Played by Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll in the Mitch Barnes directed video for our brand new song “Performative Hours”, Ron is trying his absolute best while doing his undoubtedly worst. Enjoy the white knuckle ride while each guest on the telecast catastrophe ‘The Performative Hour’ wonders how the hell they got there and what on earth will happen next.

The Garden – Freight Yard
Today, Southern California band The Garden have shared their first single of 2022, the viciously catchy "Freight Yard," and announced a massive run of U.S. tour dates that includes festival appearances at Viva LA in Los Angeles & When We Were Young in Las Vegas.
Comprised of twin brothers Wyatt Shears (Vocals, Bass/ Guitar ) and Fletcher Shears (Vocals / Drums ), The Garden have been honing their singular sound since 2011, across 4 albums and as many EP's. Known for their fast, punk-influenced jungle and DnB styles and distinct fashion sense, the duo have toured the world extensively, and appeared at Camp Flog Gnaw, Sasquatch, Riot Fest, Neon Desert, End of the Road Festival, Tropicalia, Coachella and more. The Garden have collaborated with Dylan Brady (100 Gecs), Mac DeMarco, Le1f, and modeled for Saint Laurent at Paris Fashion Week.
"Freight Yard" marks their first independent release since last year's Kiss My Super Bowl Ring LP, released on Epitaph Records. On the new single, Wyatt Shears explains - "Freight Yard is a song that is very near and dear to our hearts. Feel free to play it for your grandma and grandpa , and if you don't have those then you can listen to it very quietly with no one else around. I wrote this song while laying down at a freight yard a couple weeks ago. I would've stayed there longer, but I saw semi truck headlights approaching so I had to get out of there."

Horsegirl – Dirtbag Transformation
Debut album from the Chicago three piece Horsegirl, Versions of Modern Performance is out tomorrow. It’s Stereogum’s album of the week. Quote: “Versions Of Modern Performance holds strong over 12 tracks. That’s partially because Horsegirl have so much range within their aesthetic that their songs rarely blur into each other. Post-punk opener “Anti-glory,” with its pulsing bass and pounding mechanistic drums, shows off a different skill set from the raw guitar-pop single “Dirtbag Transformation (Still Dirty),” with its bashed-out Built To Spill vibes. At times they hone in on an indie-pop midpoint between the clean lines and clear sounds of early Stereolab and the ragged echo-chamber shoegaze of Black Tambourine. It’s all held together by signature touches like hooky deadpan vocals and harmonically dense, effects-laden guitar noise — fundamental elements of underground rock, deployed with a flair and expertise far beyond Horsegirl’s age.”

Maneskin – Supermodel
Måneskin have released a brand new video for their latest single, ‘Supermodel’.
Produced by Max Martin, the Italian band’s first new music of 2022 is loosely based on characters they met during their time in LA.
“We wrote ‘Supermodel’ after spending the best few months in LA,” Måneskin said in a statement about their new single. “At times we were surprised yet intrigued to find how people cared so much about the idea of ‘celebrity’ and status, obsessing over their looks and connections.”
Elaborating on the song some more , frontman Damiano David said: “We always have this portrait of the US as ‘the coolest place in the world where dreams come true and everyone has opportunities!’ That’s true, but then on the other side there’s a lot of injustice, unfairness, homeless people and racist shit.
“At these parties, everyone was a fucking fashion icon. I was thinking, ‘How do they feel when they get home? Are they really happy? Are they really enjoying what they’re doing?’ You want to hang out with this supermodel, but you might get in trouble. It’s like cigarettes: you love them but you know they’re gonna fucking kill you. Still you’re like, ‘Whatever, I gotta die one day’.”

Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus
Andy Fletcher, one of the founding members of Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Depeche Mode, has died. The “untimely passing” was announced over the band’s social accounts, with the group stating that they are “shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness” at their bandmate’s death. He was 60 years old.
Fletcher, often referred to within the band and by fans as “Fletch,” was one of three consistent members of the chart-topping synth-rock group since their 1980 formation. While the creative core of Depeche Mode for most of their career has been primary songwriter Martin Gore and frontman Dave Gahan, Fletcher has served as more of a utility player for the group over the years, filling in on bass and synth duties as needed (particularly live).
Fletcher also shouldered a good deal of the band’s business and legal responsibilities, with the band having no official manager until Jonathan Kessler officially signed on with them in 1994. After the departure of guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Alan Wilder in 1995 reduced Depeche Mode to a trio, Fletcher also took on increased importance as an intermediary and in-effect tiebreaking vote between Gore and Gahan.
Still, with no official instrumental designation within the band, and with no songwriting credits on any of their albums, Fletcher’s actual role in Depeche Mode was often speculated about (a half-hour YouTube video called “Just what exactly does Fletch do?” has over 143,000 views) and occasionally derided. Fletch himself played into the joke over the years, saying in 1989’s 101 documentary that “Martin’s the songwriter, Alan’s the good musician, Dave’s the vocalist… and I bum around.”

The Interrupters – Anything Was Better
The Interrupters have shared a new track, “Anything Was Better.” The release is the second single from their forthcoming album, In The Wild.
The 14-track record will drop Aug. 5 via Hellcat/Epitaph Records.
“Anything Was Better” is a triumphant song dedicated to growth and gratitude for new experiences. Though the track deals with a desire to escape, its upbeat nature and references to past struggles prove that anything can be overcome with enough passion.
Vocalist Aimee Interrupter explained the inspiration behind the song in a press release.
“This song is the story of my escape from not necessarily a location but from the pain and trauma of my upbringing,” she says. “It’s also a story of hope and seeking refuge in the unknown. I said goodbye to everyone and everything I ever knew because, in my mind, anything was better than where I was from.”

Momma – Lucky
In November of last year, Momma released a new song, “Medicine,” their first new music since their 2020 sophomore album Two Of Me. Since then, they’ve released singles “Rockstar” and “Speeding 72,” all of which will be on Momma’s new LP Household Name. Now, the Brooklyn duo have shared a moody new track: “Lucky,” which also has a music video directed by Emma Penrose and Zack Shorrosh.
Opening up about “Lucky,” Etta Friedman explains: “I wrote it after my significant other and I had to spend an unknown amount of time apart from each other on opposite sides of the country. I wanted it to feel anthemic, like a sappy and sentimental love song, but I still wanted to speak on how exciting it feels to know you found true treasure with someone you are in love with.”
Penrose explains about the video, which takes direct inspiration from Green Day’s “Walking Contradiction” visuals: “We didn’t want to get too cheesy and literal, so Etta suggested some ideas from the Green Day ‘Walking Contradiction’ video as well as the fun and etherealness of certain Beabadoobee videos. In the end, we feel like the video displays how much fun it was to film – everyone involved was a friend of either Zack & Emma’s or Etta & Allegra’s, so the project feels very personal and lighthearted.”

Grumpster – Better Than Dead
Grumpster recently released the singles "Crash" (which we named one of the best punk songs of December) and "Looking Good," and now they've announced their new album Fever Dream, due June 17 via Pure Noise (pre-order) and featuring both recent singles along with the newly-released title track. "'Fever Dream' is about being delusional," the band says. "Going through every day pretending you’re somewhere you’re not, doing anything other than what you’re presently doing. Being in a haze most of the time and not being able to snap out of it."
The album was produced by Anti-Flag bassist Chris #2, which came together after Grumpster did a livestream with Anti-Flag during lockdown. "We ended up doing a live stream with Anti-Flag during the pandemic where Chris #2 told us, ‘Write some new songs and let me produce them!’," bassist/vocalist Falyn Walsh said. "We thought, ‘Oh, god, I guess we have to make a new record now.'"
Like the last two singles, the new song finds the Bay Area trio channelling the driving, super catchy sounds of their hometown 924 Gilman/Lookout! Records scene and putting a totally fresh spin on it.

GWAR – Berserker Mode
The New Dark Ages, the 15th album from the legendary thrash metallers GWAR is out tomorrow. Despite the death of frontman Dave Brockie in 2014, the band has continued, although no original members remain.

Sincere Engineer – Library of Broken Bindings
"This song is about touring, and it’s also loosely based off this news headline I saw last year that said something about how after some castaways were rescued they said they enjoyed the 'nice break,'" Sincere Engineer's Deanna Belos says. It seems to be a continuation of the journey away from the grimy Midwestern emo that was present on the first two albums. Still, it’s very good and if this is the direction the band is moving in, I’m all for it.

Neil Young with Crazy Horse – Standing in the Light of Love
No, you still can’t stream Neil Young on Spotify, but you will have the chance to hear his long-shelved Crazy Horse album Toast this summer. The 2001 record will be released in full on July 8th via Reprise, and today, Young is previewing it with the song “Standing in the Light of Love.”
Young and Crazy Horse recorded the aptly-named Toast at Toast Studios in San Francisco. In a statement, the musician writes that the album ended up being “so sad that [he] couldn’t put it out.” He explains: “I just skipped it and went on to do another album in its place. I couldn’t handle it at that time.” That next album would’ve been 2002’s Are You Passionate?
“The music of Toast is about a relationship,” Young adds. “There is a time in many relationships that go bad, a time long before the break up, where it dawns on one of the people, maybe both, that it’s over. This was that time.”
While “Standing in the Light of Love” might sound like an upbeat rock jam on first pass, its lyrics paint a picture much darker. Young appears to be pretty clearly referencing that time when you know a relationship is coming to a brutal end: “I don’t know how you feel/ But for me it’s getting hard/ Swimming in the deep blue sea/ Marching in the big parade,” he croons in the first verse. Then, later: “Drowning in the deep blue sea/ Drudging in the long parade.” Ouch.
