(upbeat music)
Good morning.
And welcome to Morning Cereal.
Okay, good morning and welcome to Monday.
Man, it is hard to believe
that we are in the last Monday
of July right now.
I know we all don't wanna hear it,
but if you're in the same part of life
that we're in right now,
we're talking about our
kids going back to school
in two and a half weeks.
So bittersweet, summer's over,
get all that free time back again.
I don't know.
But speaking of sweet,
today is National Milk Chocolate Day,
but I'm gonna go ahead and call that
National Chocolate Milk Day.
So let me ask you this though.
Are you team chocolate syrup,
probably Hershey's chocolate syrup,
or are you team
Hershey's chocolate powder?
I don't know.
If you're ever certain days like me,
do you remember spooning
out that chocolate powder
out of those tin cans back in there?
You'd pop it off with the
spoon and you knew that noise.
I know you know it if you know it.
And then you'd have to
put two or three scoops in.
They also had the strawberry milk,
but we're not gonna talk about that
because today is
National Chocolate Milk Day.
Well, enjoy your tall
glass of chocolate milk,
but let's shift from
sweet to strong today
with our quote of the day.
And soccer star Harry Kane, he once said,
"Hard work beats talent
when talent doesn't work hard."
Now, this quote is your friendly reminder
that hustle counts more than hype.
All right, well, let's
move on to today's news facts
and they are for today, July 28th.
Back in 1914 on this day, Fox Trot,
it was first danced at the
new Amsterdam Roof Garden
in New York City.
Then in 1945 on this
day, a US Army B-25 bomber,
it crashed into the 79th floor
of the Empire State Building
in New York City due to fog.
That's crazy.
I do remember reading about
that at one point in time.
Then in 1973, the summer jam
at Watkins Glen in New York,
it drew more than 600,000 fans,
which is crazy because you
don't hear about it that much,
the summer jam of 1973,
because it was actually
bigger than Woodstock,
which we always hear about.
Then finally in 1978, a classic movie,
but not a classic movie of
all time, "Animal House."
It was released in theaters on this date.
Well, happy birthday to you.
Today is your birthday.
You share a birthday with
morning serial quote giver
and English soccer star, Harry Kane.
He's just 31 today.
Then soldier boy, he's a rapper.
He's 34 today.
Then actress from "Saved by the Bell."
You might remember her, right?
Elizabeth Berkley, she's 52 today.
Then here's another name
from the 80s and the 90s,
actress Lori Laughlin.
You would know her from "Full House."
And for me, the movie "Rad,"
I remember having a huge crush on her,
a girl that could ride
a BMX bike like that.
Believe it or not, she is 60 today.
Then the late and former
first lady and style icon,
Jackie Kennedy Onassis,
well, she was born on this date in 1929.
Well, the number one song
on this date back in 1982,
one of my favorites, "Eye
of the Tiger" by Survivor.
Now, what better hype song exists
and stands the test of
time than "Eye of the Tiger"?
I mean, from boxing, obviously rocky,
to getting yourself hyped
up for basketball games,
heck, getting yourself hyped up
to give a
presentation to the board, right?
Well, even if it's just
getting yourself hyped up
for a Monday morning,
this song will get you ready.
It gets the job done.
And interestingly, this iconic track
was written specifically for "Rocky III."
You probably know that,
but it was only after
"Suevester Stallone"
could not get the rights to
"Another One Bites the Dust."
Well, the song spent six weeks
on the top of the Billboard 100,
and it still packs
that motivational punch
more than four decades later,
which still doesn't sound right
because I was alive when that came out.
I'm clearly getting to a point in life
where I'm figuring out I'm getting older.
All right, well, now that we're all
pumped up and inspired,
let's head into
today's book review segment.
And we're continuing our journey through
Steve and R. Covey's
"The Seven Habits of
Highly Effective People."
And we're diving into
habit four today, okay?
Think win-win.
And we started with the introductions
to the principle of
interpersonal leadership, okay?
And Covey opens up this
chapter with a powerful quote.
Here it is, quote,
"We have committed the
golden rule to memory.
Let us now commit it to life," end quote.
So this habit marks a
shift from independence
to interdependence, which
we've been talking about.
And after learning to be proactive,
we begin with the end in mind, right?
We're putting first things first.
Habit four, it reminds us
that effective leadership
and meaningful relationships
are rooted in mutual benefit,
not in competition, okay?
Covey emphasizes that
win-win isn't about being nice.
It's about being
courageous and considerate.
It's the belief that
there's enough success
to go around.
And I know that's strong
accord in my life, right?
We're always trying to make sure
we kind of get our own, right?
But there's enough of that
to go around for everybody.
So Covey contrasts this
with these three less
effective mindsets, okay?
Win-lose, which is I
win and you lose, okay?
Then there's the
lose-win, you win and I lose,
nobody likes that.
And then there's the lose-lose.
If I go down, you're
coming with me, okay?
Now these are toxic paradigms
and they create
resentment and dysfunction
in both personal and
professional relationships.
No surprise there.
Now the win-win mindset thrives on an
abundance mentality,
okay?
It's the belief, again, that there's
plenty of recognition,
there's plenty of success,
and there's plenty of
opportunity for everyone, okay?
Covey writes, quote, "Win-win sees life
as a cooperative arena, not a
competitive one," end quote.
It's grounded in
character, relationships,
and agreements that honor
both parties' interests.
So to build win-win relationships,
Covey says we must cultivate three
essential traits, okay?
First is integrity.
You gotta stay true to our values.
Then maturity, balancing courage and
consideration, okay?
And an abundance mindset.
That's number three, right?
These are the foundations of true
interpersonal leadership,
okay?
Here's your takeaway.
In a world where hustle
culture can make it feel
like success is a zero-sum game,
choosing win-win is an act
of leadership, not compromise,
okay?
Think big, act with integrity,
and look for solutions where
everyone walks away better.
All right, well, you
Monday morning warriors,
whether you're crushing goals today
or you're just crushing a
tall glass of chocolate milk,
remember that hard
work still matters more
than perfect conditions, all right?
