INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M NATHAN JAHN.

IN THE NEWS TODAY,

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
Federal Judge dismisses indictments against James Comey and Letitia James. The indictments were dismissed after it was found that the prosecutor who brought charges was illegally appointed by the justice department. The rulings from U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie are a rebuke of the Trump administration’s efforts to target his political opponents as well as its legal maneuvering to quickly appoint a prosecutor willing to file the cases. The orders make Lindsey Halligan the latest Trump administration prosecutor to be disqualified because of the manner in which they were appointed. The dismissals are likely not the last word in the matter, as the Trump Administration is expected to appeal the ruling. The dismissal centers around the fact that Halligan made these indictments in a temporary role. Halligan served the indictment only 4 days after assuming her role. The Trump Administration rushed to get Halligan in the role as she told President Trump that she would file the indictments quickly.

IN INTERNATIONAL NEWS,
Israel’s military launches strikes against Gaza, continuing to test the ceasefire. 5 senior Hamas officials have been declared dead, but identities have not been revealed. Health officials report at least 24 dead, and another 54 wounded, including children. Israel said that the strikes were in response to gunfire against their military, so they decided to attack on Saturday. Internationally, peace was beginning to pick up steam in the Gaza region, with the UN security council taking large steps. On Monday, they approved the blueprint to secure and govern the territory drafted by the US. It authorizes an international stabilization force to provide security, approves a transitional authority to be overseen by President Donald Trump and envisions a possible future path to an independent Palestinian state. Israel has previously carried out similar waves of strikes after reported attacks on its forces during the ceasefire. Israel’s military in a statement said it launched attacks against Hamas after an armed terrorist crossed into an Israeli-held area and shot at troops in southern Gaza. Peace has not been achieved in the Gaza region for a long time, so with continued military attacks, hope is declining that this time it will be reached.

IN ECONOMIC NEWS,
Kohl’s names new CEO to be interim Michael Bender. He has been serving as the interim CEO for the last seven months. He is their fourth CEO in as many years. Bender replaced Ashley Buchanan who was fired in May after an internal investigation found that he had directed the company to do business with a vendor founded by someone with whom he had a personal relationship. Quote “Over the past several months as interim CEO, Michael has proven to be an exceptional leader for Kohl’s – progressively improving results, driving short and long-term strategy, and positively impacting cultural change,” End-Quote, said Kohl’s President. Bender is a retail veteran with 30 years of experience at retailers from Walmart to PepsiCo. Retail earnings continue to roll out in what has become a volatile period for retailers who are trying to win over customers stung by inflation and a weakening U.S. jobs market, while simultaneously navigating an erratic U.S. trade policy. Annual sales at Kohl's have fallen for several years and it's struggled to find a way to grow profits. Shares of Kohl's Corporation, based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, were unchanged Monday.

TURNING OVER TO SPORTS, HERE’S WITH AN UPDATE
