Hachana L'Shabbos

Rav Shlomo Katz and the chevra of Shirat David explore the avodah of Melave Malka not as a custom but as an act of love.

Drawing from Shulchan Aruch, Gemara, the Rizhiner Rebbe, and the Shlah HaKadosh, we learn that escorting the Shabbos Queen is not about leftovers or convenience, but about honoring the Presence that filled our homes for twenty-five hours. Melave Malka stands as its own seudah—mutzav artza, v’rosho magia ha’shamayma—rooted in the weekday yet reaching Heaven.

Through niggun, food, and consciousness, we discover how Motzei Shabbos becomes the bridge between holiness and ordinary life, and how angels ascend and descend with us each week. When we escort Shabbos with song, intention, and kavod, the light of Shabbos does not leave, it lingers.

This shiur invites us to slow the goodbye, to sing the Queen out gently, and to begin the week with dignity, simcha, and blessing.

What is Hachana L'Shabbos?

What type of rest do we yearn for on Shabbat? How do we frame our mindset during the week to prepare for Shabbat and how can we transform our Shabbat experience? Using the teachings of Rabbi Yaakov Meir Shechter, a leading Breslov Rabbi, in his sefer Yom Machmadim, we build tools towards enhancing our ability to connect to the day of rest.

Okay, let's sing this niggun. This is an old Michal Shapiro niggun. I used to sing this a lot.

Ezri me'im Hashem, ose shamayim va'aretz. Ezri me'im Hashem, ose shamayim va'aretz. Ezri me'im Hashem, ose shamayim va'aretz.

Ezri me'im Hashem, ose shamayim va'aretz. I lift my eyes to the mountain, from where will my help come. I lift my eyes to the mountain, from where will my help come. My help is coming from the Lord, creator of heaven and earth.

My help is coming from the Lord, creator of heaven and earth. My help is coming from the Lord, creator of heaven and earth. My help is coming from the Lord, creator of heaven and earth.

Ezri me'im Hashem, ose shamayim va'aretz. Ezri me'im Hashem, ose shamayim va'aretz. Ezri me'im Hashem, ose shamayim va'aretz.

Ezri me'im Hashem, ose shamayim va'aretz. Let's sing one more niggun. Is it okay with you guys? Yesh ishur? Permission granted. This is a Hanan niggun.

Another Hanan niggun. We've sung it, he sang it with us once or twice. But I think this is going to be the next—I'm not comparing anything, but I think this is really chazak, and I'm pushing him to sing it more and more. He called me this week, he's like, "you messed me up".

He sent this one in to the producer to start working on. So I think this is going to be a beautiful, beautiful niggun. Three words: Rachmana liba ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei.

Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei.

Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei.

Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei.

Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei.

Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei.

Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei.

Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. Rachmana Libba Ba'ei.

Rachmana Libba Ba'ei. What a niggun, no? Accepted. It's a burner. It's part of the, it'll make it into its rotation be'ezrat Hashem.

Okay brothers, gut erev shabbos, let's start learning. You can pass these around, רן דף שין צדיקא חת for those that need. The papers I have here, Shin Tzadika Chet. We're in, I told you we should call it שין הכנה למוצאי שבת, that's where we're finishing the sefer.

We began last week talking about havdala. What was actually even before we were getting into havdala, was so moved by so many chevra from here and outside from here that were sending me pictures of their tallis on motzei shabbos. Honestly. It made it, it was so high.

And for me too, that kippul, the folding of the tallis, I started thinking about it every day I fold the tallis also because you fold your tallis every single day. So it just shows the hamshacha of the kedusha when you learn something like that. The hashpa'a that it has that you really, it becomes incorporated in your life.

The shimush to actually activate what you're learning, it's not only referencing when you learn a halacha and you keep halacha, but when you learn an inyan, you have a kavana behind it and then you meyasem it, it becomes implemented is mashehu gadol. So mamash Motzei Shabbos, Sunday mornings getting all these pictures of people with their tallis and it was like who doesn't need to daven for sholom bayis, right? Who doesn't need to daven for sholom bayis? The person that says you don't have to daven, they need to daven for, they should have the zchus to daven for sholom bayis. But it's true when I was single and I had friends that were already married and they were coming over and shmoozing and kvetching about how hard it is at home, I wanted to smack them in their face. It's true.

You're triggering something right now actually. I would sit with chevre and they would, different people, two people come to mind right now, and every time they would get into anything, I would look at them, I would never say it, but in my heart I'm like if only you knew how much I was burning to be in the parsha of what you're talking about right now. You know what I mean? Some of us have to go through those inyanim, getting married a little bit later. So this should be just as everyone that's not married yet should have this in their parsha bichlal to be part of their inyan.

So that's how, it was a beautiful thing. Today also what we're going to be learning is for al mnat leyasem, al mnat to keep this together. And I have a big hakaras hatov to Reb Simcha Hochbaum for many, many, many, many things, many things. The first official paying member of Shira David, he wanted to be the first one when we opened up the membership to the shul.

But for many, many things and honestly whenever Yehuda you give him so much proper kavod by bringing him in, it's very, very special, it's very, very special. He's something else. So he told me this a few times that it doesn't matter how tired, full, stuffed, or not in the mood he is, he is so makpid on Seudas Melave Malka, Seudas Dovid Meshicha. And Seudas Melave Malka and I got it from Reb Simcha and every Motzei Shabbos when I'm tired or whatever, I think of Reb Simcha Hochbaum and I'm like, you know what? That yid for sure worked harder than me on Shabbos doing what he does in Am Yisroel.

I could afford to make whatever's going on. Now the inyan is like this, the shayla is what type of a seuda is the seuda of Motzei Shabbos? And that's what we're going to be speaking about because like many of us grew up, Shabbos was Friday night and Shabbos day. Shalosh Seudos optional, Melave Malka, where's the concert? It didn't have to do with seuda, a Seudas Melave Malka. So we have a lot of different remazim here, see something very, very beautiful but the davening is that it should become already a lemaiseh this Motzei Shabbos with consciousness that this is a Seudas Melave Malka even if you are actually at I don't know, you have to go to a kid's soccer, whatever it is like a pe'ilut Motzei Shabbos, winter Shabbos and then afterwards there is like a pizza party or that's a big thing.

It's then to make sure that with that consciousness that's a seuda because who knows if you'll have another opportunity. Yeah.

Yep, bedavka. If you're not but the inyan is you're supposed to wash so, but the pizza, there's pizza there so yeah you could, you could start taking upon yourself that you actually do wash for pizza which is a whole another sugya we're not going to get into that right now.

But we have to look in the halacha, this is not just stam like a vortlach, it's brought down in the halacha. So look on the over here, shin tzadi ches, ita bashulchan aruch. Shulchan Aruch says siman shin.

So what does this mean? We're escorting the Shabbos Malkah out and a person should always be mesader their table on Motzei Shabbos to escort the Shabbos even if you only need, if it's only going to eat a little bit. The Mechaber attributed a whole siman in the Shulchan Aruch for this halacha, that must mean להודיע על חשיבות סעודת מלווה מלכה to point out how important the seuda of Melave Malka is וליזהר. is the olam to be zahir in seuda zu and to make sure the olam takes it on, takes it on.

Now look at this Gemara in Shabbos, I'm sure many of you are familiar with this, it's a Gemara in Shabbos Look at this.

So what's going on over here? Rabbi Abbahu, what would he do? What would he bring? What would he prepare for for the seuda? Well it's an egel, it's the... yeah, the veal. But his son grows up and he says to him: well why should you why stahm get rid of a whole calf? Like bring that for Shabbat and then in motzaei Shabbat just have that what you want. Leftovers? Yeah.

So they kept it, right?

So that's how they that's how they treated the seuda and they just took the leftover and then an aryeh and then a lion comes and gobbles it down. So the Maharsha comes over here and says like this: כתב המהרש"א שאף בשבאמת הספיק להם כוליה אחת למוצאי שבת it was just all they really needed was that amount that they left over for motzaei Shabbat mi'kol makom אין זה כבוד סעודת הלווית מלכתא שתהיה מכוליה אחת שנותרה מסעודת השבת אבל בעי סעודה באנפי נפשיה.

Ba'ei seuda? What's needed? What's wanted? New stuff. B'anpei nafshih? Stands on its own? That it's on its own, its own yechida. This is... he's talking about motzaei Shabbat right now.

The Gemara later says אמר רבי אלעזר לעולם יסדר אדם שולחנו בערב שבת אף על פי שאינו צריך אלא לכזית mamash the lashon from the Shulchan Aruch from siman shin.

The the Maharsha, the Gemara here is addressing...

the Maharsha is bringing this back and saying you would think: listen, I I don't need more than that. And when you don't need to really make a big deal out of a seuda, what don't you end up doing? A seuda. You end up the seuda. No.

You don't make it at all. Exactly. It's it's whatever and of course obviously thinking: well, I'm going to wash and then I'm going to bench for a kzayit? Remember I've told you this so many times, Breslovers, the real emesdike Breslovers, they really barely ate. The achila was like an avoda they ripped through, not only because they barely had anything.

But there are stories from the previous generation tzaddikim such as Reb Shmuel Shapiro. I'm sure it was like this Reb Levi Yitzchak Bender. I'm sure by all the ovdim from the previous generation that they would actually wash and eat the minimal amount needed in order so that they could have the zchus of saying Birkas HaMazon, because for them that was a matana. We're like burden, we get so be'simcha when sometime, somehow we'll be somewhere and we chapp the way that we could have a full seuda and we don't even have to say Al HaMichya.

We're like ברוך אתה ה' אלקינו מלך העולם בורא נפשות and everyone so be'simcha like: wow, look how we pulled this one off. They would eat a little bit so that they were able to say Any opportunity that they could. So motzaei Shabbat is a similar inyan where in the mind is like it should be a seuda, it should be with bread.

So and we should look at it like that we could start motzaei Shabbat with saying brachas like U'vnei Yerushalayim, you know all the brachas, all the beautiful brachas of benching. Is it a chiyuv to do that? Is it a minhag? Or? You get so you're so nervous, you're so nervous. I'm going to read again what the Shulchan Aruch says: לעולם יסדר אדם שולחנו במוצאי שבת כדי ללוות את השבת אפילו אינו צריך אלא לכזית. V'idach zil gmar.

You take with that however... I'm not... check with your local Sephardi. No, no, be'emet you have to check with your Rav Prati.

I don't know, maybe, maybe it's different. I don't know. This is the Mechaber, so this is not the Rema. Right, this is not the Rema, this is the Mechaber, Rav Yosef Karo, so I would think that it's an Inyan, yeah.

From here, the way he's darshing it, chiyuv, because he's saying the way that the lashon is about the obligation of having seudas is the same lashon that's used for the chiyuv of the seuda of Melave Malka. Now and I know listen, I know it's a shift in the in the head because most, I don't know how many of you grew up with this Inyan that there was always Melave Malka. Not, when we say Melave Malka, we always think like what does Melave Malka mean? Getting pizza on Motzei Shabbos.

I think an event, right. I was thinking more an event. Melave Malka, Melave Malka is you sitting at your table and you're Melave the malka. There's a Melave Malka tonight.

Right. Oh yeah, where? I don't know, like in my house. You want to come over? Well, I'm just going to be sitting around and eating a roll and I don't know. I mean I didn't grow up with like Seuda Melave Malka.

Most of us didn't. So I'm saying but if they if they just added that one word Seuda they could right like Melave Malka, okay, the there's no real reference there to eating. Even Shlomo, Parshas Vayeira, Rav Shlomo speaks deeply about the concept of why Avraham Avinu davened for Sdom to be saved. And what was the Inyan there? Ah, nachon.

Sdom. And that is the Seuda because Dovid HaMelech is saved from Sdom. Right because Moshiach.

So it's it's a long Torah in there. It's a beautiful Torah in there. But it's ramuz that the Inyan is davka a seuda. It's interesting.

Most Melave Malkas aren't, most Melave Malka events aren't seudas. They're just they're events. The Inyan is the seuda. They dropped the word seuda.

They dropped the, yeah, they just left with malka, yeah. But he's actually going to touch upon this right now from a beautiful Torah from the Rizhiner Rebbe. Look veiter. Harav Hakodesh me'Rizhin, Rav Yisrael Rizhiner, zchusoy yogen aleinu, says in Irn Kadishin: והנה סולם מוצב ארצה וראשו מגיע השמימה והנה מלאכי אלוהים עולים ויורדים בו.

We know about the famous imagery that we have from the vision, from the dream, from the Nevua, from everything that you could say about that moment, Yaakov Avinu was was lying down in Makom HaMikdash and he has the dream of the angels going up and down on the ladder. So the Rizhiner speaks there He speaks extensively about the importance of having Melave Malka Motzei Shabbos.

He spoke about it there. Yeah.

שבני אדם מזלזלים בה because people don't take it that seriously ובעיניהם נראה שהיא מוצב ארצה. Their focus on, now listen, we're mutzav artza, we're we're planted now back in the eretz, in the weekday.

Shabbos was gevald, but now it's already not Shabbos.

Sherosho magia hashomayma.

But also it's had, also you're forgetting about the other part of the pasuk, rosho magia hashomayma. It's true, mutzav artza, but rosho magia hashomayma, its head reaches the heavens.

This seuda, its hashpa'a is tremendous.

And it's shining in the supernal worlds.

וממשיך הכתוב לומר and then the pasuk continues on this ladder והנה מלאכי אלוהים עולים ויורדים בו. Godly angels ascend and descend upon it.

We all know one of the reasons we say Shalom Aleichem, malachei hashareis. And who are we greeting? Every Yid that walks home from shul has two angels escorting him and we greet, we acknowledge these angels once we get to our house. And then we say Tzeischem Leshalom, but they don't leave Shabbos, they just leave around us, our seuda because we know that it wouldn't be kavodick to start fressing before angels that that's not part of their Inyan.

When do they really return back to the heavens? Motzei Shabbos. Veyordim shuv bo. They go up and they come down.

come back again bo.

What's the diyuk of the word bo? Roshei teivos, b'yom vav, b'erev shabbos. Meaning they go back up and they come back down again be'vav, the next Friday night.

This all comes from the inyan of the seuda of Dovid HaMelech. There's an interesting footnote on dalet, you'll read it, read it to yourself, just a mechazek of everything we said, but just to continue on top.

What parsha is this from? Lavan was, Lavan was, Lavan was sending out, I think Lavan was sending out when Yaakov ran away. Sorry? When Yaakov ran away. Vayeitzei. Yeah, back in Vayeitzei, meaning later in the, right? later in that parsha.

Yeah, he sent you off nicely. Why did you run away? Yafeh.

So the niggunim are very important Motzai Shabbos. I will give another credit here, Diaspora Yeshiva Band definitely got my Motzai Shabbos playlist going on very strong with Ben Tzion introduced to them, B'Motzai Yom Menucha, which is one of the most chazak niggunim Motzai Shabbos. You know that one chevre? Breslov? Yeah, it's, once you got it, it's best guitar battle on that, the best guitar battle on that track. Nachon.

Yeah. It's good. There's a great, yeah, Avraham Rosenblum is chazak there. There's also Chadesh Sassoni.

These are, we, growing up, what were, what were Havdala Motzai Shabbos niggunim? Eliyahu Hanavi, basically that. Shavua tov, shavua tov, and there's something very sweet to that too, but there's zmiros of Motzai Shabbos. Chadesh Sassoni is, like, Chaim Dovid, plug, he has a beautiful Chadesh Sassoni, find it, it's beautiful. And Rav Ginsburgh has a gevaldig Chadesh Sassoni.

Ki'al va'avi that Yishai Ribo covers on the first album that we all did together, Rav Ginsburgh's niggunim. Yishai was before, before the whole, you know, the whole explosion, l'tova, I mean his, his coming out there in the strongest way, he sang a niggun Chadesh Sassoni of Rav Ginsburgh for Motzai, check it out and listen to it Motzai Shabbos. It's a beautiful, beautiful niggun. Huh? You gotta build us a playlist.

B'ezras Hashem. B'ezras Hashem. There are a lot. Reb Shlomo has Amar Hashem L'Yaakov, אל תירא עבדי יעקב, beautiful niggunim, there's a lot.

The longer the playlist, the longer you'll prolong the tosefes shabbos. It's all on you Shmuli. Meia achuz.

He says something very interesting here in the name of the Shlah. The Shlah, you know, we keep the Shlah by the Shabbos table. I don't know why, it's an inyan I have for years. The Shlah, the Shlah is a very important sefer.

When you go through the Shlah on Shabbos, you see that he looks at every single mitzvah that can come from the parsha and and he darshens it out and beautifully. And when there's no mitzvah, he, he has this incredible way and he was holding kol hatorah kula. Yeshayahu Horowitz I think his name was, right? The Shlah's name? Yeshayahu Horowitz. Halevi.

He was unbelievable, unbelievable. So he's saying something beautiful over here.

That's he's calling his father.

Okay, that I think we're holding better this dor.

No? I think we're holding a little bit better

If if the presence of the Ribbono Shel Olam in our lives on Shabbos was ka'rauy, you can't just walk away from it. It's got to be done in kovodik.

I take my time, I take my time, you know when I don't want someone to leave, I prolong their exit, I somehow delay it in a certain way. But if I want someone to leave, I let them know I don't want even I let them know like you you have you're on the clock, you know. But here it's different.

You do it with Shabbos where you don't want it to be an inyan of saying okay three stars, we're good. That's horrible. Horrible. Growing up we were checking three stars all the time.

Summer, b'chalal. Interesting, winter, Shabbos coming out like four hours before you were in the summer and it's still the same zach. As if something so important at 5:20 on Saturday is waiting for you, right? Omeir b'shem okay she'ein rotzin, yeah we don't want the guest to just leave so so strong.

ולפי כך מעכבין אותו and therefore he's you you don't let him get out that easily kivyakol.

ומרוב חיבתם בו מלוין אותו בשירות ותשבחות כענין ונשלחך בשמחה ובשירים like this inyan is of we'll send you out with happiness and with songs. So on a lemaisa, lemaisa level over here what are we what are we basically what are we looking at over here? Motzoei Shabbos will only be as powerful based on what your consciousness of Shabbos was because if you don't really value and understand the guest that comes to you on Shabbos why would you take your time with saying goodbye on Motzoei Shabbos? So these niggunim are of Motzoei Shabbos you really got me because I really am gonna have to figure out to squeeze in a few minutes and put together a playlist. You ripped out like seven or eight.

There's a lot. No, no, chevra, is it just me? Or the Motzoei Shabbos niggunim are are amazing? They're amazing. It's just that it's not it wasn't part of maybe the way we were, you know, growing up but it's a great time to look into it. Yosef are there piyutim special for Motzoei Shabbat that you know of? Yeah, Ze'ev, what were you going to say? First time I think in my life I ever had Melave Malka was in 2000 I was living in Safed.

I was at Chanan Solomon's table and he he was very makpid like the rest of his family, his abba to to make Melave Malka. And he was going strong and he he he was like Tsavye Yeshuos Yaakov, Tsavye Yeshuos Yaakov. Tsavye Yeshuos Yaakov. I'm telling you for like 15 minutes and it was there were niggunim coming out there that I've never heard before and they're still 26 years later they left a strong roshem.

Nachon. Chazak niggun. If you've been by Tish by the by the chassidim with Motzoei Shabbos, the niggunim each one has their own inyunim but they're very very powerful. I just want to look at one last thing here if you look at the last footnote over here.

Mesupur ki Rabbanit, it's so so fascinating. Mesupur ki I'm sorry for the chevra that don't have the next page in the sefer, look in and and listen to this.

The the Rebbetzin...

what was the Gra's I once saw the last name of the Gra. I forget right now but the Rebbetzin of the Gra What does that mean? The Mishna Berura brings this down basically that you could do a cheshbon that an accumulation it'll come out to three days when you break it before tzeis, right? Or before the sun goes down the whole next day and a little bit into the exactly.

B'diyuk.

So sholosh sholosh, the only time we do this is unfortunately Tisha B'Av that we that it happens like this. So she did this, not a Shabbos Tisha B'Av, just she was mekabel this is the Gra's wife, okay? The Rebbetzin of the Gra.

She's mekabel yeah.

So she goes after havdala to go to to rest. V'hevina Gra but the Gra understood

Do you understand what he said to her? I mean we who are we're not holding b'chalal in these and we I'm not I'm not gonna say maybe you guys, what do I know? I don't understand this at all. Like what's the inyun? She is mekabel a taanis hafsaka with who knows her kavana... yichudim.

The Gra notices this and tells her as high as you think you may reach with these tsomos, with these fasts, none of it comes close to where a Yidele can reach with a proper Isn't that? Isn't that? He says all of them combined won't reach one molecule. Right.

So she hears that the Gra said this. He's big enough, he's a big enough Posek for her, I think so.

She sat down and ate.

If the Gra's Rebbetzin is willing to mevater on for her an inyan of tsomos v'zeh and sits down to eat with our cheshbonos and everything, I think it would be a real wonderful thing to continue the mesorah of this Friday morning shiur where almost everything that we learned are not vortlach, it's actually Kabbalos. Kabbalos, every time we learn something new, chaver, like I told you from the beginning of shiur, after Shabbos text me about that experience till today, you should know there's a lot of things during davening because of our learning here for me were total chiddushim. One of them that stuck with me so, so strong, one specific one,

תוך אמוני עם סגולה is a different Lecha Dodi every Shabbos.

There are many others, but that one specifically. So these should be ממש שמביא לידי מעשה and halevai b'ezras Hashem we'll give Hashem nachas by seeing that we're try, by showing ourselves that we're trying, and that this should be l'ma'aseh and it's a wonderful time to start already this month, say, Shabbos, it's early enough, and I don't know if it's still going to be like this weather, even if it's not, it doesn't matter, it'll be a beautiful thing and halevai we should be zocheh to always do what we learn l'olmei ad. Amen.
