I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on a very Scottish rainy and overcast spring day here in Gwangju, and it is time to take off for the famed realm north of England and Hadrian’s Wall tonight as our Round Trip weekly is in full effect. And tonight’s festivities are Glasgow kissed into history as April 13, 2022. This is Danno of course as it is each & every night from studio 2, GFN HQ in Downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Tonight we head for a country with incredible history, culture, natural beauty, amazing people, and naturally great music in the aforementioned Scotland. I’ve been waiting to rock a Scottish show for a while now with my own heritage and love for the country and its football, so this is gonna be an amazing trip. Prior to Dunia Aljawad joining us aboard flight TD069 we’ve got a mix of well-known and more indie sounds to look forward to in the first hour, and we’ll roll out mostly bigger names in the 2nd hour while we’re travelling around Scotland. So to start we’ll go with Gerry Cinnamon who’s a bit in between either of those categories of artists, and we’ll talk about where we’re going once we’re on the bus to ICN. This is The Drop.
Gerry Cinnamon – Where We’re Going

The Drop has officially kicked off our show tonight on this Round Trip Wednesday. What’s up, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno on the mic here in studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju getting ready for tonight’s trip to Scotland, and it’s hard for me to tell you what my favorite thing about the country of destination tonight is, but music would be quite high on the list, and obviously whether it’s huge worldwide hits or up-and-coming indie names, there’s way too much to cover and my apologies in advance to Sir Rod Stewart for not having him on the list, although I’m doubting that’s causing even the smallest tremor in his world. Might be hearing from my parents for the omission though, so apologies in advance to mom and dad as well.
That was Gerry Cinnamon to start off the show as we begin the journey this evening, and that song was called Where We’re Going. A huge name all over the UK & Ireland, this tune appeared on The Bonny LP from 2020, and like The Proclaimers, you gotta love wearing that famed Scottish brogue on his sleeve and not trying to fake the funk on the accent.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Now, we’re gonna switch gears to the more indie parts of the Scottish musical matrix for the next block with Glasgow’s SACRED PAWS starting the fun, then we’ll go with our main man BMac aka Community Swimming Pool along with his brother who’s known as Swiss Portrait on stage, and we’ll talk about everything there is to know about after the rather confounding roundabouts but for now This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night to Caledonia.
_________

Back on The Drop still on the train to ICN tonight for our Round Trip Wednesday although we are getting close to the airport. Danno here, doing what I do and for those just joining us we are heading to the beautiful and mighty Scotland for our Round Trip starting in hour 2 with weekly contributor Dunia Aljawad joining us on the flight. For now we just wrapped a block of a few recent indie faves out of fair Caledonia, so let’s unpack the data...
SACRED PAWS – The Conversation (…this tune appeared on the Glaswegian band’s 2019 album Run Around The Sun. The duo of Rachel Aggs and Elidh Rogers actually met as part of the Golden Grrrls band (or is that garrels?), and their 2017 album Strike A Match won the 2017 award for Scottish Album of the Year.)
Community Swimming Pool – another heart (…big up to our main man, also of Glasgow in Bmac better known by this moniker and as a member of the live band for Swiss Portrait which we’ll get into momentarily. This tune dropped as a standalone single in early February.)
Swiss Portrait – Find My Way (…this is the project of Edinburgh-based Michael Kay Terrence, and is building a good budding profile over the past few years. Recently, the last two artists joined on stage in Glasgow to open for New Zealand’s Yumi Zouma as they continue their UK tour.)
Okay, so moving to the end of the first quarter we’ll get into a couple of very well-known but older school names to close things. First up is Donovan with Season of the Witch to give the Scottish Folk of the 1960’s a very deserving nod, and then we’ll get into the latest from Belle & Sebastian called If They’re Shooting At You, which will end things both vintage and modern for here in part 1. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night to the land of the Scots.
Donovan – Season of the Witch
Belle & Sebastian – If They’re Shooting At You

II.
The Drop with Danno is back and as one does at the airport, we’re just standing around in line with a lot of people who are positively pulsating with impatience. We head to Scotland tonight in hour 2 with Dunia Aljawad aboard flight TD069, and we are continuing the warm-up for that presently. We just started things with a tribute to Annie Lennox, who might just be the world’s most famous Aberdonian…
Haley Johnsen - Cold (…another artist that appeared on the show, an exceedingly great vocalist but also a talented multi-instrumentalist who also plays with Big Wild. This cut appeared on the deluxe version of the Golden Days LP, which dropped in 2019, and what a cover. WOW.)
Annie Lennox – Why (…this was off the former Eurythmics lead singer’s comeback and debut solo album DIVA, which came out in 1992 exactly 1 week and 30 years ago on April 6. A quadruple platinum album and winner of album of the year at the Brits and a Grammy, this is a undeniable juggernaut of an LP and an all-time classic.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Up next we’ll get back to the more indie side of things but keep it rather chill on the vibes. On deck we have Ayakara to be followed by Posable Action Figures and wrapping with Eagleowl, all of which we shall talk about but sans that famed brogue side opposite the sonics. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Scotland.
_________
The Drop has arrived at the departure gate and we thankfully have some extra time prior to boarding even though the security rubric was extra fierce and prolonged. For those just joining us, we head to Glasgow tonight aboard flight TD069 with the lovely and talented Dunia Aljawad momentarily, but for now we gotta run the last few tunes down before we fly outta town, and that was…
Ayakara – Soothe Ya (…this is a band of 5 friends who all went to school in Leith, which is north of Edinburgh. The band says their music is about liberation from the mundane and embracing the potential we all have to create what we want in life despite the odds, which is something we always get behind here at Drop Central, with this tune appearing on their 2016 EP of the same name Soothe Ya.)
Posable Action Figures – Welcome Attention (…this is a band also from Leith consisting of Gareth Goodlad and John Alexander. Although the band is as the Scotsman stated a nightmare to categorize, their hybrid sound does tend to be more upbeat than this on the main, with this cut appearing on their 2021 debut LP It Is What It Is.)
Eagleowl – Into The Fold (…this is the title track to the 2010 album from the Edinburgh lo-fi psyche quartet, which came together as a group in 2005. The band might not have already folded although sources have them listed as still active, with their most recent work being a standalone single from 2016 .)
Okay, final call to board just rang over the PA in nominally intelligible language that was most certainly English but I only caught maybe half of it. So, as we started with fine brogue in song we shall finish, and with all the bands hailing from Leith we couldn’t pass up giving The Proclaimers and Sunshine on Leith a whirl to finish the fun in our first 57. THIS is The Drop on our way to SCOTLAND ready to get steamin on the plane and we are at halftime.
The Proclaimers – Sunshine on Leith

Mike Vass – Quiet Voices
The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Gerry Cinnamon - Sometimes
The Corries - Flower of Scotland
Mersault – Klopfgeist

Del Amitri - Roll To Me

Dougie MacLean - Caledonia
• MacLean is a Scottish singer-songwriter, He plays multiple instruments, including guitar, violin, mandola, viola, bouzouki, banjo and bass as well as being a singer and composer.
• Described as "one of Scotland's premier singer-songwriters"
• His most famous pieces include "Caledonia", which is often dubbed Scotland's "unofficial national anthem"; and "The Gael", which became the main theme to the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans.

Mike Vass – Quiet Voices
- This artist & composer came down with neurroborreliosis in 2013 and actually went into a coma for a time.
- During recuperation he read Scottish author Neil Gunn and dedicated this album released in 2014 to his writings and teachings, which went on to nomination for Album of the Year in Scotland.
The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)
• The Proclaimers are a Scottish rock duo formed in 1983 by twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid
• They came to attention with their 1987 single "Letter from America", which reached No. 3 in the United Kingdom and the 1988 single "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", which topped charts in Australia, Iceland and New Zealand.
• "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" belatedly peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1993, after appearing in the movie Benny & Joon, becoming their only chart single in the United States

Gerry Cinnamon – Sometimes
- An artist who hasn’t crossed over to the US yet, but is a massive name in the British Isles especially Scotland who routinely sells out the UK’s most massive venues.
- This tune appeared on Erratic Cinema, which was from 2017.
The Corries - Flower of Scotland
• The Corries were a Scottish folk group that emerged from the Scottish folk revival of the early 1960s The group was a trio from their formation until 1966 when founder Bill Smith left the band but Roy Williamson and Ronnie Browne continued as a duo until Williamson's death in 1990.
• They are particularly known for the song "Flower of Scotland", written by Williamson, which has become an unofficial national anthem of Scotland.
• he trio was named after Smith's daughter, Corrie Smith, but because a corrie is a deep bowl in a mountain, the name was especially appropriate as it evokes imagery of the Scottish landscape.
Mersault – Klopfgeist
- released on I Will Kill Again from 2017, this tune means Knocking Ghost in German.
- Formed in Edinburgh in 2006, the band lead by Neil Pennycook has had a lot of labels put on them that don’t quite fit. But Pennycook describes it as “epic lo-fi,” which I think fits to a tee

Del Amitri - Roll To Me
• Del Amitri are a Scottish alternative rock band formed in Glasgow in 1980.
• They adopted the name Del Amitri (“from the womb” in Greek)
• They released six studio albums between 1985 and 2002. Their 1995 single "Roll to Me" reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
• Globally, Del Amitri have sold six million albums.

Simple Minds – Alive & Kicking
- Formed in Glasgow way back in 1977, this is the title track to the 1990 LP from the band.
- Still touring today they were in fact at The Hydro in Glasgow last week with a sold out show, known to most casual listeners for the Breakfast Club soundtrack centerpiece Don’t You.
Frightened Rabbit - The Woodpile
• Frightened Rabbit were a Scottish indie rock band from Selkirk, formed in 2003.
• Initially a solo project for vocalist and guitarist Scott Hutchison, the final line-up of the band consisted of Hutchison, his brother Grant Hutchison (drums), Billy Kennedy (guitar, bass), Andy Monaghan (guitar, keyboards) and Simon Liddell (guitar).
• Lead singer Scott Hutchison (b. November 20, 1981) was found dead on May 10, 2018 several days after going missing, causing the band to break up. The band have said that Frightened Rabbit "no longer exists" without Scott Hutchison
• “The Woodpile' is about that night you felt utterly out of place, alone, awkward and cornered. All any of us want in those instances is for someone we care about to come and take us away from it all. It's escapist, but also claustrophobic in places.”

Mogwai – Ceiling Granny
- Great tune from “As The Love Continues,” released last year.
- Formed in Glasgow back in 1996, the band has morphed into something new many times over during those years but has continued to remain relevant to music fans the world over.
San E - Story of someone I know (아는사람 얘기)
• San E is a famous Rapper, who was born on January 23, 1985 in South Korea. Korean rapper who became one of his country’s most successful solo hip-hop stars with chart-topping tracks like “Story Of Someone I Know” and “A Midsummer Night’s Sweetness.”
• He is notable for being the first solo rapper ever signed by JYP Entertainment.

BULGOG!D!SCO – Bichullae (비출래)
- This band describes their sound as frenetic and it certainly is that.
- The group is lead by singer Lee Hyun-song with drummer Kim Hyung-kyun and bassist Lee Joon-gyu providing the backbone of the group, but not a lot of data beyond that.
