The World Obeys Identity
A Lecture in the Voice and Spirit of Neville Goddard
You look upon your world and wonder why it remains unchanged despite all your efforts. You have wished, you have worked, you have waited, and still the same conditions meet you each day. The answer lies not in the conditions but in the one who is aware of them. The world does not resist you. It has never resisted you. It simply obeys the identity you have assumed for yourself in the quiet depths of your consciousness. This is the law that governs all experience, and once it is seen, the struggle with circumstances comes to an end.
Your identity is the feeling of being that you carry with you in every moment. It is not the name you answer to or the role you play before others. It is the silent conviction that lives behind your eyes: “This is what I am. This is what happens to me. This is the measure of my life.” That conviction is the mold from which your world is cast. The world has no power to refuse the mold. It can only pour itself into the shape you have given it by your own feeling of being.
When you know yourself as the one who lacks, lack appears in every form. When you know yourself as the one who is limited, limitation meets you at every turn. When you know yourself as the one who must struggle, struggle becomes your faithful companion. These are not punishments. They are not accidents of fate. They are the obedient reflections of the identity you have accepted as true. The world cannot do other than reflect what you are in consciousness, for consciousness is the only reality, and your world is your consciousness pushed out.
This is why every attempt to change your circumstances while remaining the same self must fail. You are asking the reflection to become something other than what stands before the mirror. The mirror has no choice. It can only show you what you present to it. So long as the identity remains unchanged, the reflection must remain unchanged. The effort is spent in the wrong direction. The change must be made in the one who is aware, not in the things of which he is aware.
The identity of which we speak is the “I am” that you feel yourself to be. Moses heard this name from the burning bush and understood that the awareness of being is the only God. “I AM hath sent me unto you.” He did not receive a name that belonged to another. He received the revelation that the awareness of being within himself was the creative power. Isaiah declared, “I AM the Lord, and there is none else.” He was not speaking of a distant deity. He was speaking of the same awareness that lives in you now. Jesus repeated the same truth in many forms: “I AM the way, the truth, and the life.” “Before Abraham was, I AM.” Always it is the awareness of being that is exalted, never a limited personal self.
When you place any condition after the words “I am” in feeling, that condition becomes the identity the world must obey. “I am poor” and poverty appears. “I am free” and freedom appears. “I am loved” and love finds you. There is no other power at work. The world is not partial. It does not choose whom it will obey. It obeys every identity with perfect fidelity. This is why two men can stand in the same outer conditions and experience entirely different worlds. One knows himself as blessed and finds blessing even in apparent difficulty. The other knows himself as cursed and finds curse even in apparent blessing. The conditions are the same. The identities differ. And the world, having no preference of its own, simply reflects the identity presented to it.
You cannot see what you are not conscious of being. You cannot experience what you have not first assumed as part of your identity. This is the meaning of the words “You are ever out-picturing that which you are conscious of being.” The out-picturing is automatic. It requires no effort. It requires only that you remain faithful to the identity you have assumed. When the identity is one of fulfillment, the out-picturing is fulfillment. When the identity is one of waiting, the out-picturing is waiting. The world does not originate anything. It only reflects what is already alive within you.
This is why the man who changes his circumstances without changing his identity soon finds himself back in the same condition. The new circumstances cannot live in the old identity. They wither because the soil has not been changed. The identity is the soil. The circumstances are the plants that grow from it. To have a different harvest you must have a different soil. You cannot plant the feeling of fulfillment in the soil of lack and expect a harvest of fulfillment. The soil determines what can grow.
The feeling is the secret. Not the words you speak, but the feeling you live from. You may speak the most beautiful words about abundance, yet if the feeling that accompanies those words is the feeling of one who still lacks, then lack is the identity you have assumed. The world hears the feeling. The world obeys the feeling. This is why affirmations so often fail. They are spoken from the old identity. They are attempts to decorate the reflection without changing the face in the mirror. When the feeling changes, the words, if they are spoken at all, are spoken from the new identity and carry the power of that identity with them.
To assume a new identity is to feel yourself to be the one whose circumstances are already as you desire them. It is not to hope that they will become so. It is not to long for them to become so. It is to feel the naturalness of being the one for whom they are already so. This feeling of naturalness is the sign that the new identity has been assumed. When you feel natural in the state of fulfillment, you have ceased to be the one who is waiting and have become the one who has received. In that moment the world begins its work of obedience.
You do not need to know how the change will appear. The how is not your concern. The who is your concern. Who are you? That is the only question life asks, and it asks it continuously. Your answer, given in feeling rather than in words, is what the world obeys. When your answer is the feeling of already being the fulfilled one, the world has no choice but to bring forth the evidence of that feeling. The bridges of incident will appear. The people will play their parts. The events will arrange themselves. All of this happens because the world is under the command of your identity. It cannot do otherwise.
The old identity will protest when you assume the new one. It will tell you that the feeling is not real, that the circumstances deny it, that you are only pretending. These protests are the death cries of the old self. They have no power except the power you give them by believing them. When you persist in the new feeling in spite of the protests, the protests fade. They fade because they are no longer fed by your attention. What is not fed must die. The new identity grows strong because you are feeding it with your feeling. What is fed must live.
This is the meaning of persistence. It is not the stubborn repetition of words. It is the quiet, steady living from the new identity until it becomes the only identity you recognize. During the interval between the assumption and the visible change, nothing may appear to have happened. The interval is the time required for the old identity to die and the new one to become established. In that interval you may be tempted to return to the old feeling. But if you remain faithful to the new identity, the interval comes to an end and the evidence appears.
The evidence always follows the identity. It never precedes it. Signs follow; they do not precede. When you have truly assumed the identity of the fulfilled one, the signs of fulfillment must appear. They cannot remain hidden. They are compelled to appear because consciousness must express itself. There is no power in the world that can prevent the expression of an established identity.
You see now why the world has seemed to resist you. It was not resisting you. It was obeying you. It was obeying the identity you were presenting to it. When you present a new identity, the resistance disappears because there is nothing to resist. The world is not your enemy. It is your servant. It serves the identity you have chosen with perfect faithfulness. Serve a new identity, and it will serve you in a new way.
This truth places all power where it belongs—in your own consciousness. You are not waiting for something outside yourself to change. You are not dependent upon the goodwill of others or the favor of circumstances. You are the cause, and your world is the effect. When you accept this, you accept your true dignity. You cease to be a victim of conditions and become what you were meant to be—the master of your own experience through the mastery of your own identity.
Tonight, as you prepare for sleep, you can assume this new identity. You do not need elaborate preparations. You need only to feel yourself to be the one whose world is already in harmony with your desire. Let the feeling of fulfillment fill your consciousness. Let it become the last feeling you know before sleep. In that feeling you have assumed the identity that the world must obey. As you sleep, the world begins its work of bringing forth the evidence of your new identity.
When you wake, do not look immediately for the change in circumstances. Look instead for the change in feeling. If the feeling of the new identity is still alive in you, the work is still being done. Continue to nourish that feeling throughout the day. Return to it in the quiet moments. Let it become more and more natural. The day will come when you look upon your world and see that it has obeyed. The circumstances will have rearranged themselves around the new center you have established in consciousness.
This is not a technique to be used for a little while and then discarded. It is a new way of living. It is living from the identity you have consciously chosen rather than from the identity you accepted by default. It is the conscious assumption of the state you desire and the persistent living in that state until it becomes your only identity. When this becomes natural to you, you no longer strive to make things happen. Things happen because they must. They happen because your identity commands them to happen. This is the effortless way. This is the rest of which the scriptures speak—the rest from all struggle in the finished work of consciousness.
The world obeys your identity because that is its nature. There is no other cause in your experience. All that you see is the out-picturing of the state you have accepted as yourself. When you change the state, the out-picturing must change. This is the law, and it is not mocked. You are free to choose the identity you will present to the world. Choose the one whose circumstances already bless him. Choose the one who walks in the fulfillment of his desire. And as you choose it in the secret place of your consciousness, the world will have no choice but to obey.
You are not at the mercy of your world. Your world is at the mercy of your identity. And you are free, at any moment, to assume a new identity and set in motion a new world. This is the freedom no man can take from you. This is the power no circumstance can deny. This is the truth that, once seen, can never be unseen. Assume wisely. Assume the identity of the fulfilled. Assume it now. And see your world obey.
