Speaker 2:Hey. Good morning, Juno. It's Sharon Gapin. It's Capital Chat. And with me this morning to kick things off are Chris Gianotti and Maureen Hall.
Speaker 2:They're on the board of Saint Vincent de Paul and have a great deal to talk about. But let's start with the big event, Chris.
Speaker 3:October 3 at 10AM, we're having our walk a mile in my shoes fundraiser walk. It starts at 8617 Teal Street. That's our blue building on Teal Street behind the auto mall. And we'll do a loop from there and end up there and have a grilled lunch.
Speaker 2:So all you have to do is walk and then what do I get to eat if I come Maureen?
Speaker 4:Yeah, well after the walk. And I will add that we're also having a five k run that is one of the Juno Trail Roadrunner Yes. Races. And that... So registration for both the walk and the run will start at 09:30.
Speaker 4:And we're just doing a loop. Well, the runners will do three loops and the walkers one right there in the area starting and finishing at st vincent's campus. And and then we're gonna have a a lunch afterwards, which we've traditionally done after our our fundraiser walk slash run. And... Yeah.
Speaker 4:So that'll be pretty simple. You know, hot dogs and board members will bring in goodies to eat and salads and and what have you. So, yeah, looking forward to seeing lots of our community members showing up for that.
Speaker 2:Because let us not forget, it's a fundraiser for st vincent de paul. And I thought we should take like a minute just to tell people what you all do and why you need money to help do it. So whichever one of you wants to talk. Go ahead, Chris.
Speaker 3:Well, the society of st vincent de paul here in Juneau operates over a 100 apartments and housing units. Of those 26 are in what we call our family shelter on Teal Street. And those are those are really low cost rooms for families who have nowhere to go. There it's clearly, you know, bar. The rooms are fairly simple.
Speaker 3:I forget the dimensions, but it's enough for... But it's just a room. And in the corner, there's a water closet with a toilet and a sink. They go down the hall for showers and those are private. They can lock the door and have their showers, but and also walk down the hall for a shared kitchen.
Speaker 3:And, you know, those are one way we serve the homeless population. We also do run the warming shelter. So
Speaker 2:So there's a lot there. Yeah. And you also do some other things in the community. Right? Yeah.
Speaker 2:Because we've got a couple of minutes.
Speaker 4:Yeah. We've got wonderful volunteer ran aid program where, you know, we get referrals from social workers at the hospital, Capital City Fire Rescue, you know, all over town search, and people can self refer. And we we serve as a backstop. You know, we... A couple of our volunteers go out to the people and then offer, you know, how can we help?
Speaker 4:It may be paying an electricity bill. It may be helping prevention by cleaning up, helping, you know, if someone's having an inspection. Yeah. So anyway, we really have very flexible aid program that, you know, we just love to serve the folks with that.
Speaker 2:You know, I did want to point out that the walk is going to raise money to continue doing what you do. And people can go to your website and learn more about st vincent de paul and especially what it does here in Juneau. There is no price requirement for the walk on October 3. It's donation. It's donation.
Speaker 2:So, you know, don't just come out and support because once you do this walk, you're gonna be so inspired and know more about our community. That's why it's so important. Do you wanna add one more thing, Warren?
Speaker 4:Yeah. I'll I'll just say following the walk run, there will also be opportunities to tour our facilities And there on Teal our website is svdpjuno.org.
Speaker 2:Okay. Well, Chris Giamatti, Maureen Hall, the rest of the board, your director, everything. Looking forward to seeing you on the third. This starts at 10AM, but you can get there at 09:30 to register. Correct.
Speaker 2:Okay. Well, thanks for coming by. Thank you for
Speaker 4:having Yep.
