The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Wishing a happy birthday to the one & only Funky Drummer to start, then it's onto all the biz just out over the weekend with Danno holding down the full two hours!

Show Notes

As broadcast April 18, 2022 with plenty of extra candles for your podcast birthday cake.  Tonight we wish a heartfelt although posthumous happy birthday to The Funky Drummer himself, Clyde Stubblefield.  He and James Brown created a totally new sound that shook up the world back in the 1960's, although both were not musically trained!  Rest In Power and Happy Birthday to a legend.  After that, we had lots to go through from the previous weekend and week prior with Danno covering the entirety of the two hours.  Great new cuts out from the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Lizzo, G-Eazy, Faye Webster, and oh so many more!

It is 20 hours past midnight, after another shimmering spring weekend here in Korea. Danno here this is what I do from studio 2 GFN HQ, and we hope you’re having a good start to it all this week. This Monday is entered into the record as April 18, 2022. Big ups to each and every one of you who are here with us tonight, we’re absolutely thrilled you’re joining us, whenever and wherever you do indeed to that. Tonight we have some great new tunes and album announcements to go through for the full two hours as I am once again on the solo tip for the full two hours this evening. New album announced from Lizzo to kick off hour 2 along with a new collab cut from beabadoobee, and here in the first hour we have joints from Phoebe Bridgers, Faye Webster, GRAE, and plenty of others with a week of rather quick-hitting new cuts on tap. For right now though, we start by wishing a happy birthday to one of the world’s most iconic drummers a happy birthday, although posthumously. Where would the world be musically without Clyde Stubblefield? Perish the thought, fair listener. THIS is The Drop.
James Brown – Cold Sweat
The Drop is officially on the air tonight with the history and such to begin after work shakeoff. Danno here, studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, warm welcomes to each and every one of you getting with the program. Tonight we start with James Brown and our dearly departed birthday boy Clyde Stubblefield, that was the iconic Cold Sweat to start things, and that was of course our TIGHT (or) feature for this evening’s kickoff.
Few drummers no matter the talent level have had the impact Clyde Stubblefield did in his work with James Brown. His drumlines have been sampled on hundreds and hundreds of tunes, especially in hip-hop beats. From Funky Drummer to Cold Sweat and on and on, Stubblefield only played for six years with the Godfather of Soul, retiring to live in Madison, WI in 1971. For the next 20+ years, he and The Clyde Stubblefield Band played a Monday weekly.
Stubblefield like James Brown himself was not musically trained, but obviously was a very talented musician. Unfortunately he passed away just over 5 years ago in February 2017, may he rest in power.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So, moving ahead let’s get to the new stuff tonight and we’ll begin the parade with Boyish then we’ll hear from Porridge Radio and Jordana to complete the first triangle. Naturally, we’ll discuss all of this after they run around in space, but for now THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
The Drop returns to the mic for the final bit of verbosity here in part 1 tonight on this New Muses Monday. Danno here once again flying solo as Kat Bass has moved to Tuesday nights for our indie showcase. At any rate, great tunes out this week, so good new stuff to discuss both hours this evening, and for that first block you just heard…
Boyish – I Think I Hate It Here (…interestingly, this band was created when India Shore and Claire Altendahl failed their Berklee College of Music auditions. The band are out with a new EP later this spring called My Friend Mica, so keep an eye out if you dug that and follow them on the services.)
Porridge Radio – The Rip (…previously we had a single from Porridge Radio to their upcoming single, but nothing regarding info on the album. Well, that has all ended with this single. Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky will drop in full May 20, and we’ll probably get a couple more teasers before the full LP in the meantime.)
Jordana – To The Ground (…another album due out May 20 is Jordana’s Face The Wall. To The Ground is the latest single to the LP, an interesting less indie and more pop number, the song sees Jordana wanting to feel something, anything really. Once again that’s To The Wall by Jordana, out May 20.)
Alright, so we’ve had quite a few quick hitters in that last block, so we have a trio lined up to close the first quarter with. Up next is one of the big tunes out from this weekend, which is Phoebe Bridgers and Sidelines. While it seems like Bridgers has been everywhere the past few years since Punisher released in 2020, all the works have been covers and features. This would be the new music original from the artist since that last famed album, and this appears in Hulu’s adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel Conversations With Friends. After that we have a new single from Mt. Joy called Orange Blood, which is the title track to the band’s new album just announced Friday with this cut’s release, and that album is out June 17. To close the first fourth we’ve got Saya Gray’s latest called Saving Grace, the latest from the artist’s debut album 19 MASTERS, which drops June 9. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.

II
The Drop is back and we just cold opened . Danno here, studio 2 GFN HQ doing exactly what I do, and Kat Bass brings her popcast in hour 2 shortly, but still a good bit to do here in part 2. Now, as to what we just blurted out, let’s explain ourselves...
Wet – Where Did The Day Go (…this is the newest single from the Brooklyn-based trio, and just a good new standalone to play tonight, nothing larger announced. However, if you’re new to the band, check out their debut self-titled EP from 2013 or Don’t You from 2016.)
Faye Webster – Car Therapy (…an interesting new project of covers from Atlanta Millionaires’ Club and I Know I’m Funny haha, her first two albums. The Car Therapy Sessions is out April 29 and is a selection of orchestral renditions of covers from both albums.)
Pod, socials, etc…
Up next as always on this night more new music to serve to you. On deck we have GRAE to be followed by Bearcubs and Triathlon, all of which we will duly outline but not pontificate upon. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday evening.
____
Back on The Drop as we give the first half of the show its finishing touches on the wrapping for the final airbreak of part two. Danno here flying solo for the coming weeks as we work out who’s gonna do the Popcast 2nd hour with Kat Bass moving to Tuesdays and doing the primetime indie thang. Could it be you? If so, hit us up you know where to find us. As to what just happened, let’s draw the shapes…
GRAE – Don’t Know How To Girlfriend (…the artist’s debut album is out as of Friday called Whiplash. Definitely a highly anticipated bit of music, GRAE is an artist who’s been plying the trade with noticeably excellent results, so do check if you like what you heard there, highly recommended.)
Bearcubs – Everyday (…the latest from the solo project of Jack Ritchie. Bearcubs has been making music for four years now, which they describe as a blend of emotive electronic music, future garage, and lofi house.)
Triathalon – Spin (…file this song under fun to search for on the internet, but glad I do know a bit about the band itself, which is a quartet out of Georgia. Much like Bearcubs previous to this tune, their style is a mix of genres but a bit more on the experimental and surf soul level.)
Alright so the second hand keeps moving and we gotta close the deal here before the buzzer sounds and give the tunes room to breathe. To close we have Vancouver Sleep Clinic with a tune called The Flow, and we’ll see if we can fit in Tomberlin and their latest sunstruck here on the air, but it will be on the stream version of the gig in full. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday and it’s halftime.
Vancouver Sleep Clinic – The Flow
Tomberlin – sunstruck

Part III

Hot Take
Sharon Van Etten & Angel Olsen – Like I Used To
- In an exclusive interview with the former, the artist stated that she learned some hard truths during lockdown in Los Angeles.
- Saying in an interview that she’s a mother now and has to be strong for her son, Van Etten will be out with her latest album We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong on May 6.
- No singles will be released prior to the full album dropping, so maybe this generalized title applies to the music industry as well. Got a feeling about this one, stay tuned.

Lizzo – About Damn Time*
- Lizzo has returned in a big way over the weekend with this new single and an exclusive live appearance on SNL.
- This is the lead single to the upcoming album from Lizzo called Special, which comes out July 15 and should indeed be exactly that.

Fresh Cuts
Conan Gray – Memories
- This is the 5th single to the artist’s upcoming album Superache.
- In the song, Conan wants the person he’s singing about to stay in his memories since he wants them to feel comforting and happy as they are. Superache drops in full June 24.
Teddy Swims – dose
- "Love how you kiss every tattoo on my face," the Atlanta native sweetly sings over bouncy bass and grooving percussion on the song's knockout chorus. It turns out in this tune that Swims is seriously lovesick.
- This is the first post-release joint from the artist’s newly minted EP Tough Love, available everywhere now.
Deaton Chris Anthony feat beabadoobee – iScream
- According to Stereobum, the artist’s biggest claim to fame so far is co-producing “New Shapes,” last year’s alt-pop icon summit convened by Charli XCX, featuring Christine And The Queens and Caroline Polachek, Deaton also had a song with Clairo.
- This tune sees Deaton teaming up with Philippines London-based sensation beabadoobee for his debut album SID THE KID, which drops July 29.
Anitta feat Chencho Corleone – Gata
- Brasilian sensation Anitta is out with their latest album Versions of Me as of last Tuesday.
- This reggaeton smasher is the post-release single to get the emphasis from the artist’s PR team, and the album has been voted in a Billboard poll as the listener’s favorite new music for last week.
Swedish House Mafia feat Connie Constance – Heaven Takes You Home

Alec Benjamin – Speakers
- The artist watched in disbelief two years ago as they cancelled more than 150 tour dates, locked in with the rest of us. This was the beginning of a process that brought about (un)commentary, which explores his own unique views and quite literally provides an “uncommon commentary” as he interprets the changing world and how it impacts his own life. The album is available everywhere as of Friday.
Ingrid Andress – Good Person
- It’s been just over two years since Ingrid Andress put out her Grammy-nominated debut album, Lady Like. Now, she’s back to kick off album two.
- First up off the as-yet-unnamed new project is “Good Person,” a self-reflective song that explores what it means to be “good” — and how to define “goodness” in ourselves and others.
G-Eazy – Angel
- An interesting new single here, certainly not what you’d expect from the artist but these are clearly special circumstances.
- G-Eazy’s mother passed away 5 months ago, and Friday saw this track dedicated to her get commercial release. The artist says that while making the song, they could feel the presence of mom’s spirit dancing in the room.
- As far as style twists, this kind of feels like Hendrix’s tune of the same name.
Why Don’t We – Let Me Down Easy (Lie)*
- The ever-popular group here in Korea are out with their latest single, although this is just a standalone with nothing bigger announced.
- The band is currently on tour in the US, hoping they head over here soon now that restrictions are done.

On Tour
Meshell Ndegeocello – Don’t Disturb This Groove
Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth
Andrew Bird – Manifest

- Andrew Bird is out on tour here in 2022, with the singer out in Europe presently.
- Both Bird along with Iron and Wine are doing the tour together with 3rd support artists of very high quality joining on select dates, with Meshell Ndegeocello joining for a few of them during the process. Another amazing concert I hope makes it out here.
