Listen along as I speak with special guests on how to thrive in all aspects of life. Hi, I'm Edna. Like many of you, I wear many hats. So tune in as we bring on the light. Well, hello everyone.

Edna Harding [00:00:47]:
Thank you for tuning in for another episode of the Essa Printer Podcast. My name is Edna Harding and I'm here recording live at our home in Madison, Alabama, Huntsville, Alabama. And I'm so excited that each and every one of you guys are joining me today, tonight, this morning, wherever you are. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Please, please, please let me know if this episode blesses you. If you're new to me, I am nothing but a messenger of life, hope and truth in business and would love to hear about what's going with you all and see if you guys have any questions that you may have regarding this. So if this is your cup of tea, you're in the right place. Today we're going to talk about business without favoritism.

Edna Harding [00:01:42]:
I know now I do have to say I told you guys I was going to continue the episode from last time this week, but when I was spending time with the Lord this morning, he told me to not talk about that. He wanted me to talk about this. So I guess he needed me to say whatever he wanted me to say in the last episode. So today we're going to change the topic and focus on this very important thing which is really dear to my heart and his heart, which is found in James, chapter two, verses one to 13. And this should really transform how we approach business relationships, client selections, and even building our own enterprises. And I've seen this time and time again because I can't tell you how many times I deal with scenarios where there's a certain type of treatment or expectation or experiences for those who are more the high caliber clients versus those who are low ticket. Okay, so yes, I'm going there today. So if you guys want to really hear the truth and the truth that will set you free, that's the backed up by the Bible.

Edna Harding [00:02:57]:
Tune in today. But let me go ahead and pray because I could sense there's going to be a lot of religious spirits that are going to come against what I'm about to say. And even those people who may be condemned, not in a bad way, but thank you, Holy Spirit. Not condemned, but convicted, because they're probably doing it. So we need to pray for all of us, because I'm one of them at sometimes at one time. Okay. Right before as well. So let's just pray.

Edna Harding [00:03:30]:
Father God, Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, we need you more than ever, especially this hour. We pray, oh, God, that you give us eyes to see and ears to hear what your spirit is saying through your word today. Holy Spirit, give me the words to speak and use my mouth as a vessel for your glory in Jesus mighty name. Amen. All right, so this passage kind of hit me hard. I think it was a couple weeks ago when I started reflecting on how the business world and honestly, how I've operated sometimes, right. Where we treat people based on perceived wealth or status, for example, and not to say I'm not talking about obviously, like, the superficial stuff or, oh, you know, you treat the rich folks more special versus poor people. I'm talking specifically in business.

Edna Harding [00:04:27]:
Okay, so actually that is kind of related to business because if you go to restaurants, someone shows up in a Porsche, you know, or I don't even know what a fancy car is, but whatever those fancy cars are, I gave up on that a long time ago when I was in my early 20s, want a, like, luxury fast car. And now I'm like, I don't even know what's in right now. But anyway, they show up and everyone comes flocking to them. Why? Because they know they're going to tip them. Well, they assume that, right? And then you have someone who comes in and, I don't know, a Volkswagen, and no one's in a hurry. They're taking their sweet old time. Does that make sense? So that's the kind of stuff we're going to talk about today. And it's based on God's word.

Edna Harding [00:05:13]:
Um, James actually has something very powerful to say about this, and it's going to challenge the way you think about who you serve and how you serve them. Sorry, guys, I need to fix my mic because my mic is in my face right now. Okay. Hopefully you guys can still hear me. All right, so let's go ahead and read the scriptures found in James, chapter one. I'm sorry, James, chapter two, verse one to four. It says, my brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting where a gold ring and fine clothes and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in.

Edna Harding [00:05:51]:
If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, here's a good seat for you. But say to the poor man, you stand there or sit on the floor by my feet. Have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? So here James is talking about church meetings, okay? But this same principle actually applies directly to how we run our business. As you, you know, as I'm looking at my notes here, I'm reminded of a time when DJ and I were just dating and we were going to a church and you know, we were professional individuals. He was a high position in the military, you know, I was a businesswoman, you know, successful in Houston. And they would, they made us sit in the front, they gave us assigned seats. Okay. In the front.

Edna Harding [00:06:46]:
And mind you, we're just new to church and you have people who've been in this service or being in church for many, many years and didn't have assigned seats. And we had assigned seats. And I've never heard of that. I mean, we weren't even pastors. We were just regular attendees. And it could be just from they said that they. What they say is like bas. It's based on your you're giving or perception, I don't know.

Edna Harding [00:07:09]:
But the church does that. But I also believe that businesses do that too. So it could be VIP treatment for high paying clients or different service levels based on someone's budgets or rushing to respond to the big fish while the smaller fish. Wait, am I, am I stepping on toes already? Because I feel like I am maybe only networking with people who can do something for you. You. Does this sound familiar? You know, I've been guilty of this many, many times. And sometimes the Holy Spirit will have to check myself, you know, whenever those things do that, right? And, and mind you, why do we do that? Have you ever asked yourself that? Why does our flesh do that? Why do we treat someone that can possibly pay us more, possibly be more valuable to us differently from those people who don't have value, who taught us that those people are more important than the ones who don't. Right? So we're going to dive deep into the difference between world's way and God's ways.

Edna Harding [00:08:24]:
And I hope that this is already enticing you because even like when I was preparing this, I was really like, well, this is going to ruffle some feathers. And so let's go ahead and talk about how the world operates first. Okay. First you see the red carpet treatment. Okay? Imagine first class service for first class budgets, private phone numbers for premium Clients, instant responses for big contracts and then delayed responses for smaller ones. Right. I remember, it's so funny. I remember because obviously I have clients who are my higher ticket clients, you know, and really high or ticket clients that have my regular clients who pay to.

Edna Harding [00:09:13]:
Even using that term, that right there, the holy spirit is checking myself. You know, the ones, the startups and the founders and those folks who are still on their way to building, you know, the business that has the extra income. I remember they were really surprised that I gave them my cell phone number. Right? Because most of the time even if you look at the high ticket like coaching programs, you don't even have the cell phone numbers of my coaches. Like normally the people who has cell phone number of their coaches are the ones who are the high like six figure type of coaching programs. Right. Whereas mine, you know, like these folks who I have has my cell phone number and I actually pick up sometimes I facetime them and you guys know, if you're my clients, they're like, I don't think, I don't know if they're shocked, but I don't think a lot of people realize that that's not normal. I'm a different type of coach.

Edna Harding [00:10:12]:
I don't treat people, anybody different because of, and mind you, I get frustrated sometimes because sometimes I think, you know, honestly, from, from my standpoint, it seems as if like people take advantage. They don't realize like how blessed they are because they haven't really compared my coaching program with other people's coaching programs. Maybe they've never had a coaching program before and, and if they did, they would realize that the way I treat my clients is very different from the way the world treats their clients. And if you've been in my training programs and my coaching programs compared to the world's coaching programs, you could tell, like it's a huge differ. Get the level of attention, the level of detail, the level of responses, the level of care about your soul, about your destiny, about your assignment, as much as I do, like I honest, and I'm not saying this to brag I to the point where I get upset at myself because whenever I see people drop out or whenever I see people not finish or whenever I see people struggling, like, it really affects me if you ask my husband, like I'm like in tears and crying when my, my clients are struggling, even though it's not even me, it's them. Like that's how much I care. Okay? And I'm saying this to say that this is, I don't I didn't do this on my own. I'm learning.

Edna Harding [00:11:33]:
I, I believe this is the gift that the Holy Spirit gave me to teach me the Father's heart. Where Jesus treated everyone differently. I mean, treated everyone the same and he cared for everyone. Doesn't matter. He didn't look at the external things, he looked at the heart. Okay, so that's the red carpet treatment. Let's continue on. Otherwise I'm going to be here forever.

Edna Harding [00:11:52]:
Am I even recording? I really hope I'm recording because I'm just talking here and I forgot to. Yes, I am. Okay, thank you, Jesus. All right, the second thing is a networking hierarchy. I mean, think about it. We scan name tags at events looking for titles and company names. We look at the title like, oh, CEO, manager. Okay, let me talk to the CEO.

Edna Harding [00:12:13]:
Right? We look at the titles of the individuals, okay? And how many of us have ever gone a gotten a huge client because of the gatekeeper? I think this right here, it's a teaching lesson for all you startups and small businesses. Like, you don't have to only speak with the CEOs. Talking to the gatekeepers is going to make a huge difference in your business. And don't treat anybody differently because sometimes though, gatekeepers are the very ones that's going to get you in effect. A lot of the times when I got these multi million dollar clients and how I broke indoors was through their warehouse guys or through their shipping manager, or through their person or the finance person, or through the receptionist even, like I, I can't tell you, and there's this rule, and this is really going to help you in business as well, is that you have to know three layers up and three layers below, right? So when I was targeting, you know, major corporate global accounts and these people have never worked with us before, we were never even on their list. You know, we were never an approved vendor and all those things. And the reason why I was so successful is I knew how to network up and network down, meaning three layers up, all this, executives, the CEO, you know, the, the directors, they knew me. And then below, three layers down, meaning the warehouse guys, the receptionist, accountant, you know, the, the janitor, security guard, they all knew me too as well.

Edna Harding [00:13:48]:
So if you're really trying to break indoors, you need to make sure that you build these strategic relationships three layers up and three layers down. That's number one. Number two, as far as the world, what the world does is they invest more in time when it comes to relationships that benefit them. Right? So how many of us have focused more on the high ticket clients versus the little ones. Right. And, and I why and that makes sense because what is your return on investment? But I also just want to send a reminder that don't forget about the little guys because these are the people that, well, hopefully they appreciate it sometimes I have to say, some people, some of them don't appreciate it at all. So there has to be a fine balance and wisdom. But just don't forget them because these very people, hopefully as they get older, as they get successful, as they get bigger, they'll remember you when they, wherever they are and that they'll be able to, you know, send some business your way.

Edna Harding [00:14:53]:
Okay? So don't measure the connections that you focus on by what they can do for your business. Like treat everybody the same. And I know this is the opposite of the world, what the world teaches. In fact, I'm just saying, listening to myself as I'm talking and I'm like, you're giving them the wrong advice, Edna. But I know this is what the word of God says and I know this is challenging or thinking right now like, well, how is this going to help me? I don't want to waste my time and it's like, I get it, but if the Holy Spirit tells you, hey, I want you to go sit right there next to the drug addict, or I need you to sit right next there next to the prostitute, or I needed to sit you right there to the one that no one wants to talk with because they look weird, do it. I know, easier said than done. Can you imagine? I'm reminded of a story. Actually, I won't go there yet.

Edna Harding [00:15:52]:
I'll talk about that later. But let me just get back into. So, so that's when it comes to networking, then you have the assumption game where we judge someone's ability to pay by their appearance. So if they look a certain way, we're assuming they can't afford you. And then the ones who look a certain part, you say, okay, they can't afford you. But in reality, I can't tell you how many times when this is when I was in Houston and I was working with a lot of prominent business owners. And it's funny because the ones that were driving the Mercedes and driving all the, you know, and have looking all fancy were the very ones that kept asking me for a discount, asking me for a discount or lowering, some sort of negotiating thing. And I was really shocked.

Edna Harding [00:16:37]:
I'm like, aren't you successful? And so I say all this to say, don't Judge people by their cover. We've noticed before. Don't make assumptions about what someone can afford and don't offer specific packages based on first impressions. Because one thing I've learned from my mentors, and I've heard not all of them say this, but the good ones, and I don't remember who I've heard this from, but never assume that they can't afford you, right? Never assume they can't afford you. Always assume that God has given them what they need. So that if you were called to these people, that he already provided what you. What they need for to purchase you. Right? To purchase your services.

Edna Harding [00:17:25]:
All right, so let's go ahead and talk about James, chapter five. And it says, has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love, love him? Because in God's economy, it operates differently, right? He chose David, a shepherd boy, to be king. He used Mary, a young girl from Nazareth to birth, the Savior, he picked fishermen to be apostles. Okay, what if that small client you're tempted to deprioritize is actually someone God wants to use in a mighty way? Right? What, what, what are you going to do? Right? How are you going to. How are you going to miss an opportunity because you judge them too quickly through your lens. Right? So I'm going to talk to you guys a quick. Tell you a quick story about a gala. Okay? Sorry, I was thinking, I was just thinking about saying I'm like, what was it? Was it a gala? Well, it was kind of like a gala slash fundraising type of event.

Edna Harding [00:18:46]:
And I remember it was at the River Oaks area. If you guys are not familiar with River Oaks area, like, if you're rich, you're in that area. Okay. So I don't know how much the tickets was. Was really fancy. Everyone's wearing beautiful dresses. Everyone looks so dolled up and everything. And I was with my.

Edna Harding [00:19:05]:
One of my business partners and we're there. And it was this specific gala was meant to support women in transition, specifically women who needed business suits to rebuild their lives. And I remember when I was walking in, something felt. Felt very off, and basically these women in ball group ball gowns were talking about their homes and their husband's accomplishments and where they were going, traveling and. And just a bunch of things, right? Like not real conversations in my mind. It was like superficial conversations, at least for me, because I like to get to know people individually. I like to know their stories, but that's just me. Right.

Edna Harding [00:19:51]:
I want to know, like, who you are outside of the accolades. Okay. But I remember seeing a table, and these were the women that we were all there to help. They were seated at the very back. I remember it was like, one, two. I think one or two round tables. And mind you, this gala was this. This.

Edna Harding [00:20:12]:
I think it was a golf course or golf club. I think it was a golf club. I don't remember. It's been so long, and it was huge. They were sitting in the back. No one was speaking to them. You know, they were very invisible. Okay.

Edna Harding [00:20:26]:
And I remember I went to the back and I sat with them and I listened to their stories. One of them was starting a cleaning business after escaping domestic abuse. I remember there was another one that was studying to become a paralegal while raising kids. I know there was another woman, I believe, that was. Was just recently homeless because he left. She left again. A domestic violent man. And the reason why I'm, like, slowing down because I'm just reminded of, like, where would I be if I didn't have my family, if I didn't have another place, Right? Because remember when I was going through that abusive.

Edna Harding [00:21:16]:
The abusive relationship, abusive marriage. I remember at least I had a place to go to because the house was under ours, both our names, and we. And basically, I was the. I had a lot of money. And so what he did was he took all the money. And I remember he, like, wiped it clean. And I'm like, oh, my gosh. Like, so I was looking for my end.

Edna Harding [00:21:46]:
I'm like, I have nowhere to go, but God took care of me, and I had. Else. But then you have these women who have children who don't have a place to stay, but they chose to leave that situation because they want better for their kids. And so I'm saying all this, like, these were, like, really strong women. And they're not. To me, it wasn't just about the business suits. It was more like, these are, like, heroes. Like, these are women who were standing up for a better life.

Edna Harding [00:22:17]:
And it really, like, you know, so funny because we were. You know how, like, these galas, they would call people up and they'll say, okay, this person donated, like, as a silver sponsor or gold sponsor. You know, they basically go down the list and. And. And then what? They also had, like, models. So these women would go and walk in the suits. I'm talking about the women that they're trying to help, like, walk in the suits, like, as a. As a Runway.

Edna Harding [00:22:50]:
And in my mind, I'm like, What does this have to do with the cause? Like, what does this do for the women? Like, in my mind I'm thinking, well, instead of giving them business suits, why don't we, like, raise money to donate, like sponsorships or maybe buy like a, like a house for these women or like, give them a year's worth of, I don't know, groceries like that, to me was better than business suits. At least that's for me. Right? Or in addition to the business suits. Right. And. And on top of that, like, instead of acknowledging all the different awards and why don't we allow the women to kind of share their story and, you know, like, that's what I'm talking about. Like, it just seemed very shallow. And, you know, I, I believe that if Jesus was there, if Jesus was in that gala, I don't think he'll be.

Edna Harding [00:23:53]:
And mind you, I had a. We had like a table with assigned seeds and we're towards like the front middle kind of thing. And I didn't even want to sit there because to me it was just, it was. I'm not trying to be judgmental, but it was all for show. It was just like, okay, let's just have a night out. Let's give ourselves an excuse to dress up. Right? I believe that if Jesus was there, he would have not stood for that. Right.

Edna Harding [00:24:24]:
He didn't divide the kingdom by social class. I hope you hear me. By way of the spirit, he shared it freely with rich and poor alike. We're called to do the same, not just in our charity, but in our business. You know, these women, they weren't less valuable, okay? They were just hidden gems just waiting for someone to see them. Okay? So I want you to take this into practical lessons, okay? Let's see how favoritism can possibly sneak into our business. So number one, response time based on client budget. So your high ticket clients, you respond right away.

Edna Harding [00:25:04]:
Those who are not paying you or those who are struggling to pay you, you respond last or late. Right. And that's a struggle because I get it and you know, we only have a certain amount of time. But are we. If we, if, if, like all levels, if, if money wasn't an issue, if all equal, would you, if everyone was paying the same thing, would you do the same thing to that person that you're waiting to respond 48 hours because they're paying less, or would you respond the same? If it's all even playing field, I hope I'm making sense. Okay? You prioritize treating, treating the big fish better. Right. There's some sort of exclusivity in pricing and service or if you have some strategic networking that overlooks the unseen.

Edna Harding [00:25:59]:
So you look around and if they don't look like your ideal audience, you don't really have a conversation with them. Okay. You know what James called, what James in the Bible called that, what that is? It's called sin. It's called sin. So how do we apply this to our business? How do we improve this so that we line up with James? Okay, so number one, give your best to every client regardless of their budget or background. Okay? So for example, consistent response times for all. Excellent as a minimum, not a luxury. Okay.

Edna Harding [00:26:38]:
Unbiased project execution, right. Whether they're paying you a little or that they're paying you a lot, give them results, the best results for that person value. Brace pricing, not person based price. According, hear me to your services were not the wealth of the buyer. Right? So provide transparent pricing on your site, for example, or fair budget conversations. You could do need based payment models when prompted by the spirit. Right? So I can tell you how many times I've done that before in the past where I know their situation. Maybe they're in transition, maybe they just had a baby, maybe they're looking to buy a house, maybe they have some car issues, maybe they have some health issues.

Edna Harding [00:27:21]:
Whatever it is, if the Holy Spirit tells me, hey, give him a good deal, then I give them a good deal. Right? However, there are times when the Holy Spirit wants to challenge their faith and he already has provision in mind. And you know, I can't. Thank you Holy Spirit. You know, one of the things I struggle with is sometimes I try, I try to be Jehovah Jireh in my clients lives and I have to remember like I have my own bills to pay and I, I've invested so much time and money, you know, building the things that I've built. And as much as I would love to just keep being Jehovah Jireh to other people, it's just not feasible because I have two young children that needs to go to college. You know, we have, you know, my husband is about to retire, you know, in a few years. So I can't keep lowering my rate so that I can accommodate, right? I'm just not able to.

Edna Harding [00:28:18]:
I can't. I have needs, right? And so I have to trust that this is. I'm already giving you a pretty special rate compared to what I'm already supposed to be charging because I know this for a fact, right? To kind of help work with your budget. But at the same time, if that is still too much, then at that point, I need to allow the Holy Spirit to be the one to provide for them and pay for the services that, that they're trying to get from me. Okay. All right. And then we gotta remember that every meeting we have, whether they buy from you or not, is a mission. Every client is a calling.

Edna Harding [00:29:03]:
So you want to honor every conversation. You want to seek out the overlooked and you want to trust God's lead. Not the LinkedIn profile. Yes, I went there. Not the what? Not the social media profile. Right. Not the how they look or how many followers they have profile. Okay, not because, oh, they don't.

Edna Harding [00:29:23]:
They have a lot of. They have a lot of influence. No, you, you don't want to do that. Right? You want to be able to just make sure that each and every one of us are just being led by the spirit of God. That's all. Okay. Because remember that a small client today could be building a movement tomorrow. And I pray and hope that those small clients will remember you.

Edna Harding [00:29:53]:
But guess what? Even if they don't, you know who remembers you? God. God. He sees you. He knows it all. And he remembers what you have done for his people. You know, James, end with a warning where he says, judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment. So what does mercy look like in business? That is grace driven pricing, for example? For example, offer payment plans or extend grace when needed.

Edna Harding [00:30:26]:
Consider work, trade or partial scholarships. I've done that before. You could do free value for the faithful. Serve those who can't afford you. Wisely and spirit led. I've done this for churches, many for at least three or four years. Okay, I've done that. Give what you can volunteer at, like for example, prison entrepreneurship program.

Edna Harding [00:30:46]:
I did that. I. I did that for high school students, juniors and seniors in high school for the Rotary Club. Majority of a lot of typical. Typically a lot of these people come from, from like low income housing, if that makes sense. Or not even low income housing, but struggling schooled neighborhoods or like stuff like that. And you, but they are smart, the kids are smart. And so volunteer your time with them.

Edna Harding [00:31:18]:
Like there's many ways for you to give. Okay. But if you don't have anything to give, don't give. Like build your business, make that profit and then give, okay. He wants you to take care of your family too. Remember, there are second chances. Mistakes happen. Life gets hard.

Edna Harding [00:31:35]:
So don't be quick to cut off. Be Quick to extend mercy. And that's something I got to work hard on because I know at some point all those people who left after they tried it the world's way, at some point the Holy Spirit already told me that they're going to come back and I can either extend mercy and do what the Lord says or be like, yeah, no, I'm not going to take you as a client because I told you and you didn't listen, you know, kind of thing. All right, so this week what I want you guys to do is audit your favoritism. Are you prioritizing people based on the potential profit? And, and one of the things I want to say is you want to have a standard for both of them, right? Regardless if they're high ticket or low, tick it. You want to create some sort of unique universal client experience. Okay? I treat everyone the same. In fact, my one on one clients, like if you, if you, for example, if you go to my business unlimited group mentoring program, there's a client intake form, there's a client need analysis form, just assignments.

Edna Harding [00:32:43]:
I do the same thing for my one on one clients. Obviously the group mentoring takes a little bit longer because they do it themselves versus the other one. Where they're talking, it's like, would you rather talk to the author of the book or would you rather read the book? Right? Like, which is going to take long, right? So that's kind of like the whole thing, but it's the same experience. It's just the deliver. The delivery method is different, right? One is group setting, the other one is one to one. Okay. And then connect with someone you normally overlook, right? Don't judge them by its cover. Don't only focus on the ones that are comfortable to you.

Edna Harding [00:33:21]:
Like step out of your comfort zone. And you could introduce grace based options, right? Like scholarships, payment plans, extra service, those type of things, like add value. So I remember one of the things that I've learned from a mentor before is like if you, if they're saying that the price is too high, then make it to the point where the price is too low. Meaning instead of changing your price, add to the stack, add to the value stack, Add more things so that whatever you add is worth more than. And I'm talking about perceived value, I'm talking about the recipient, not what you think, but the recipient perceives that what you're giving them is way more than what they're paying for it. Right? And when in doubt, they're not for you. Right? So, James, two one is not a suggestion My friend, this is a command from God. So your challenge this week again is to examine your favorite.

Edna Harding [00:34:19]:
Examine whether favoritism lives in your business. Repent and research your approach. Implement one practical change and pray for divine appointments every day. I truly believe that the best is yet to come. It's only June. We still have about seven months left. Is it seven? Yeah, seven months left. And I truly believe God can do great and mighty things that we cannot even fathom if we lean on him and trust in him completely.
