How do you make 100 million people mad at Netflix? Take away password sharing. That’s how many are getting a free ride—and it’s a drag on revenue.
There have been two phases of testing crackdowns for shared passwords. In Latin America, the streamer saw a number of primary accounts cancel—but many returned. In Canada, subscriptions went up—probably because the free riders went legit. This also matched up with the rollout of the ad-supported platform.
Another change is Netflix ending their DVD-by-mail program. DVD subscribers could be as high as 1.3 million. They also accounted for almost $146 million in revenue last year.
