A California man is headed to federal prison for four decades after secretly filming children he met through a church. U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Becerra sentenced 46-year-old Jacob Melvin Hart late last month, following his guilty plea to attempted production and transportation of child sexual abuse material. Prosecutors say Hart, a former IT consultant for a California church, handed minors laptops loaded with spyware that let him remotely activate their cameras, secretly recording at least eight victims. He was arrested last year at Miami International Airport after a flight from Haiti, where agents found 33 illicit videos on his iPhone, plus roughly 160 AI-generated images. U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones said Hart "weaponized technology and abused positions of trust," adding the sentence "means he will likely spend the rest of his life in federal prison." Hart was previously convicted in 2006 for hiding a camera in a girls' locker room at an Oregon Christian camp.

Two North Carolina teenagers are facing criminal charges after authorities say an abortion attempt ended with a baby born into a toilet at 31 weeks. Eighteen-year-old Syeisha Johnson and nineteen-year-old Elijah Speight appeared in Durham County court, where Judge David Hall set a one-thousand-dollar secure bond for each; both have since posted bail. Johnson is charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury on an unborn child and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, while Speight faces negligent child abuse. First responders found the newborn in the toilet on July 29th and performed CPR before the child was rushed to Duke Medical Center with a pulse. Investigators say Johnson ordered mifepristone and misoprostol from Virginia. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America's Marjorie Dannenfelser said, "Shipping abortion drugs through the mail is illegal," warning that without in-person evaluation, "screening is impossible." District Attorney Satana Deberry countered, "I believe a woman has the right to choose."

An Episcopal Church seminary in Texas has named a new leader nearly a year after firing its president over an inappropriate relationship. The Board of Trustees of Seminary of the Southwest in Austin has elected the Rev. Ruthanna B. Hooke, a professor of homiletics at Virginia Theological Seminary, as its next president and dean. She takes office on New Year's Day 2027, succeeding interim president the Rt. Rev. Diane M. Jardine Bruce. Hooke said she was "thrilled, honored, and so happy," describing the school as "a place of warm hospitality, authentic community, and a strong sense of purpose." Board chair the Rt. Rev. Kathryn M. Ryan praised her "deeply relational and collaborative approach to leadership." Last September, trustees unanimously removed Scott Bader-Saye after he admitted an inappropriate relationship with an employee he supervised.

Sight & Sound's beloved biblical stage production "Ruth" is heading to streaming, premiering August 13th on Wonder Project's subscription service through Prime Video. Originally staged in 2005, the show follows the Old Testament widow whose loyalty to her mother-in-law Naomi leads her from tragedy to a new life in Bethlehem — and into the lineage of King David and, according to Matthew's Gospel, Jesus Christ. Producers call it "a celebration of love" and "a remarkable story of second chances." The release is part of a partnership that began July 30th, rolling out titles like "Jesus," "Moses," "Queen Esther" and "Miracle of Christmas" roughly every two weeks through fall. Sight & Sound President Josh Enck says, "We try to say no to hundreds of good ideas and yes to the God idea."

A British driver says his car insurance was cancelled over two "Jesus loves you" messages taped to his vehicle. Thirty-five-year-old Simeon Chandra told insurer GoSkippy about the green tape lettering on his 2009 Nissan Pixo — reading "Jesus loves you" on one side and "Jesus loves you v much" on the other — and even sent photographs. The company reportedly declined the "modification," saying, "For the policy to continue and be insured we require the stickers to be removed from the vehicle and [to] send a dated photograph once the stickers have been removed." Chandra said he was "shocked, surprised and upset," insisting the message "is not abusive, political, hateful or commercial. It is a message of hope." He's now working with the Christian Legal Centre, whose chief executive, Andrea Williams, warns the case should alarm anyone valuing religious freedom.

South Korean pastor Son Hyun-bo, the leader of the conservative Christian movement Save Korea, met President Donald Trump at the White House over the weekend, bringing his family along for a brief, friendly exchange. His son, Chance, shared photos on X, writing, "My father, Pastor Son Hyun-bo, was jailed 145 days — no bail, no conviction — simply for preaching Scripture according to his conscience," adding, "Fear no man. Fear no government. Fear God alone." Son, senior pastor of Busan's World Church, also visited the White House Faith Office, saying, "I sincerely thank the White House for inviting my family." He organized rallies against the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol and has pressed U.S. officials over South Korea's Religious Corporation Dissolution Act and Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Act. Son received a suspended six-month sentence over alleged illegal electioneering, and was released from prison January 30th.
